If you were GM...
If you were currently the GM of the Jays what offseason moves would you make, if at all. Taking into account payroll contracts etc.
Should be interesting to hear peoples thoughts...
Personally I would trade B.J Ryan for a shortstop or starting pitcher of some kind (any ideas on who) then create a closerr by commitee woth Carlson, Downs and League. I would then try to sign Juan Rivera as a stopgap to Snider, and start Snider at AAA personally no ideas for catcher other thn a one-year deal as another stopgap to Arencbia. Other ideas include pursuing Fielder and not Burnett.
Any Others?

I wouldn't mind trading Ryan.....
Mostly to lower salary, I think it might be hopeful thinking to to try for a starting pitcher for him or at least a quality starter for him. I don’t think I’d go closer by committee but I wouldn’t be against handing the job to League. I think Downs is more valuable in his role
B.J. Ryan
We could leave the bullpen alone. The only acceptable trade here is going to be if the Jays sign Kerry wood, and that might not be so far off…..
The Trade-Maker
I would guess that the chances of us signing Wood would be pretty slim
But if we did trade Ryan we have a handful of good possibilities for closer. Brandon League will be a closer sooner or later, Downs was amazing last year and could close, Accardo did the job in 2007 and will be back and our favorite, Jesse Carlson could likely do the job Ryan did without, you know, causing us heart troubles every time it comes in to pitch.
And we need a DH and a starter badly....
if we could get one for Ryan or free up the money to get one by trading Ryan, I am all for it. But, trying to guess what JP might do is not easy.
Hmmm
There’s so much I’d do!
- I’d keep Ryan, there’s no accounting for an experienced closer, Jays bullpen was lights out last year and that is needed if this team wants to contend.
- I’d bring back AJ Burnett for 4 year $60M deal
- I’d sign Jason Giambi to DH for 2 year $20M
- I’d trade League and Cecil to Milwaukee for Hardy
- I’d sign Glendon Rusch as a spot starter/long man as insurance for McGowan/Purcey
- I’d sign Michael Barrett to share time with Rod the Bod
C – Barajas/Barrett
1B – Overbay
2B – Hill
3B – Rolen
SS – Hardy
LF – Lind
CF – Wells
RF – Rios
DH – Giambi
Bench: John McDonald, Marco Scutaro, Joe Inglett, Jose Bautista,
SP: Halladay, Burnett, McGowan, Litsch, Purcey (Rusch)
RP: Rusch, Janssen, Downs, Carlson, Accardo
CL: BJ Ryan
If healthy this is a pretty stout lineup and solid pitching staff. In case of injuries Travis Snider is almost ready in AAA to fill in at corner OF, DH or 1B, Casey Janssen could step into the rotation if required as well. The big IF here is whether AJ Burnett will come back to TO for $60M (or at all). If he doesn’t the money could be spent on brining in Oliver Perez, Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster or Ben Sheets. I think with Frank Thomas’ contract coming off the books it opens up the $ for Giambi and I think there are others coming off the books this year but I can’t remember who off hand.
Lineup would be:
Hardy®
Rios®
Wells®
Giambi (L)
Lind (L)
Rolen®
Overbay (L)
Hill®
Barajas/Barrett
Wells has always done better as a #3 hitter and Giambi is more of a pure cleanup hitter although vs Lefty pitching might swap them to spread out the lefty bats a little more.
Catcher options
Instead of signing Barret, why not Josh Bard. He is going to be cheap considering what happened in San Diego.
The Trade-Maker
not a bad idea

The moves I'd make
I’d commit to Snider and Lind in LF, not a platoon, but just sharing time, until one of them clearly shows he’s the better player. The other two OF positions I’d leave alone.
I’m willing to give Rolen and Overbay a shot at keeping their positions, despite the risk.
I would sign Rafael Furcal. I believe he can come back from the injuries and be a great lead-off hitter, actually stealing some bases and playing very well.
Hill is fine at 2B.
Barajas will be interesting to watch as an everyday C, but I think a major league ready backup might be necessary instead of Curtis Thigpen…so sign someone like Henry Blanco or David Ross and see what Spring Training holds.
The starting rotation scares me the most. Marcum is out for the year; Burnett won’t likely re-sign; so that leaves Litsch and Purcey as true starters, and an injured McGowan who may, or may not be ready come the beginning of 2009. That’s pretty scary.
I’d sign Ryan Dempster, and maybe one other starter, someone who could be considered a reclamation project. No, not in the way Tomo Okha and Victor Zambrano were reclamation projects. Someone more like Claudio Vargas or Jason Jennings.
I would leave the bullpen alone.
Last, but not least, I’d get a real DH, who can also play 1B or OF. Ricciardi blew it with Adam Dunn, so that’s not going to happen. Pat Burrell has proven that he’s not an asset playing defense, so he’d be a good addition to the AL as a DH (while still getting the occasional start in LF). I’d see it this way:
Furcal SS – S
Rios RF – R
Wells CF – R
Burrell DH – R
Rolen 3B – R
Overbay 1B – L
Hill 2B – R
Barajas C – R
Snider / Lind LF – L
(maybe Overbay hits in the 2-hole, moving Rios to 5, and Rolen to 6)
Thigpen C
Parts of Scutaro, Batista, Inglett, McDonald
Halladay R
Dempster R
McGowan R
Litsch R
Purcey L
Ryan CP – L
Downs L
Carlson L
League R
Janssen R
Tallett L
with parts of Accardo, Wolfe, Camp, Frasor
Janssen was great as a starter
until he hurt his back, and then tried to pitch through it instead of telling the team. (That’s why he didn’t get a callup that September.) Saving the Dempster money would help with the Furcal signing and perhaps allow an even better bat than Burrell, esp since so many of the other bats in the lineup are righties anyways.

Janssen
also looked very good last spring as a starter before the shoulder injury. I very much like the idea of giving him a chance, particularly with our bullpen looking so strong. He has, or at least had, the stuff for the starting job.

Another possibility: Randy Johnson
tRA+ of 130 in ‘08—his defense cost him 28 outs. 28! That’s like a whole game! Figure you knock 10 points off the tRA+ (he was at 120 for both years of his Yankee stint) for switching leagues and he’s not much worse than Burnett’s career year at about half the money, plus he won’t need a multi-year deal.

I like the idea of Johnson
I’d imagine he’d take a one year contract and he has his 300th win ahead of him, with him and Janssen our starting pitching might not be too bad.
State of the Jays
The Blue Jays need to improve the starting roation and hitting part of the team. I agree with signing Juan Rivera as a stop-gate for Snider. I don’t agree with trading Ryan, that would hurt the bullpen. The Jays bullpen worked purfectly this year. 1 Piece gone, the closer it would be downhill. The only time that it would be OK to trade Ryan would be if the Jays sign Kerry Wood. Even if they don’t trade Ryan and sign Kerry Wood, the bullpen would be very hard to hit against. All the Jays need to do is score 4 runs, and have the starters go 7 innings. Then the Bullpen would be unbeatable. The htting part of the team needs improvement. Instead of signing Barret, how about Josh Bard. And maybe sign Jason Giambi, but I don’t think that is too possible considering that he wants to sign with the Athletics or Orioles. The Jays will have to improve there starting rotation and maybe add one more piece in the bullpen. They Jays would be hard to beat.
The Trade-Maker
Obviously trading Ryan would hurt the bullpen
but you have to deal from your strength.

Harder to trade from our weaknesses.....
no one wants our shortstops or Stewart/Wilkerson/Mench. But seriously I think a case could be made that our bullpen could be better next year even without Ryan. Accardo and Janssen will be back. Frasor gone and we know what Carlson can do this year…..if you could fill one of our several holes by trading Ryan you gotta do it.
If our bullpen has Downs, Accardo, League, Carlson, and Wolfe
you have to figure the other two aren’t going to get used much anyways (mop-up men). Why have Janssen languish in one of those roles when you can try him in the rotation. If you’re not convinced on Richmond as a starter then have him be the mop-up man—at least he won’t walk anyone.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I agree about Janssen
a team whose rotation has as many question marks as the Jays can’t afford to have quality pitchers pitching low-leverage innings in the bullpen without at least trying them in the rotation, which is what will happen if all those guys are healthy and in the bullpen. I actually think Richmond would be a solid righty reliever, he has the fastball-slider combo, can get strikeouts, and doesn’t walk people.

Also, Janssen was actually better as a starter in '06
(tRA+ of 104) than as a reliever in ‘07 (tRA+ of 101), although it’s a small difference and obviously there are sample size implications for the relief stint. And that 104 includes the 1-7 run before he got sent down, during which time he apparently had a sore back.
