My Jays top 5 prospects

List with comments:http://bleacherreport.com/articles/85843-toronto-blue-jays-top-five-prospects-for-2009/

1. Snider

2. Arencibia

3. Cecil

4. Cooper

5. Jackson

Apparently, the only difference between my top 5 and the one here is that I have 2 and 3 flip-flopped... though I can't blame anyone for having them switched as I was tempted to the same myself, but I like Arencibia a smidge more.

The system isn't as strong as I thought - the top 4 were easy, but it seemed to thin out a bit after that. I'm not big on Jackson, but thought he still was worth slotting 5 due to upside.

I said in my article that Snider will "likely' begin 2009 at AAA, but a couple people have told me I was nuts for saying that.

Also shocked that about 30% of people thought someone other than Snider was the #1 prospect (there's a poll).

Anyone have any feedback?

I can't imagine

anyone not having Snider as #1, unless they didn’t think he was eligible because he finished the season with the Jays. Arencibia is a great prospect and he has helped his stock with a solid AFL performance. I’d still rank Cecil higher, just by a smidge, because Arencibia still hasn’t learned to take a walk, at all, and I do think that’s a non-trivial thing. There is plenty of precedent for highly touted prospects who didn’t walk and never quite made it. On Arencibia’s side, 1) he’s still very young and there’s plenty of time to improve, 2) catchers don’t need great power and great discipline so just a small advance in plate discipline will arguably make him a perennial all-star with his other skills, and 3) catchers tend do develop offensively a bit late. In Cecil’s case, the numbers suggest he’s good enough to pitch in the majors now, he just needs to add durability to be a starter in the bigs, and that’s probably a safer bet than Arencibia developing more plate discipline.

All valid points. I think it’s really that close.
