Time to stop for directions?

Promoted from Fanposts - Hugo

With the unfortunate passing of Ted Rogers has anyone heard if there is a direction for the Jays from the Rogers leadership?  Will they have any additional money to spend or at least spend what they spent last year?

With the economic outlook and the falling CDN $ would it not be the prime time to move into a rebuild mode?  With some smart moves the team could rebuild now and be ready to compete in 2-3 years again with say a $70M payroll rather then $100M plus...

Would it be possible in one offseason to move the likes of Roy Halladay, BJ Ryan, Alex Rios, and Lyle Overbay???

Trade Ideas:

Doc and Overbay to LAD for James Loney, James McDonald, Scott Elbert and that Hu SS prospect guy - Doc pitching in Chavez Ravine and in the NL would make him easily the best pitcher in all of baseball and give him a chance at a much deserved playoff run!

BJ Ryan to the Mets for a couple of mid-level prospects

Alex Rios to Chicago Cubs for Josh Vitters and another prospect

Moving Rios opens an OF spot for Snider, Loney is a huge upgrade over Overbay IMO and having one of Downs, League or Accardo close isn't much of a downgrade (if any) over BJ...Vitters is the answer at 3B in 2010 once Rolen's contract is up...Losing Doc hurts but if McGowan is healthy he gets the chance to be an ace and Marcum will be back next year, James McDonald and/or Scott Elbert could start in 2009 as well and both have huge upside.

I know this is pie in the sky, but nice to dream when the Jays are not in the news at all!

I'm still not ready for rebuilding

The team was close last year with holes you could drive a truck thru. With an average dh and reasonable production out of LF at the start of the season we’d have been right in it. Even without that our Pythag record was quite good last year, we did have some bad luck in close games, if that luck levels out this year we should be pretty good.

Even with Snyder/Lind in left and DH we should improve our offense. The odd hit with RISP would help, I don’t see any reason that we shouldn’t improve with RISP.

That said, if you could get something for Overbay and Ryan I’d be happy. I don’t want to give up Doc, even if this isn’t our year 2010 looks pretty good at the moment. I’m not sure trading Rios now would be selling low. I hope his power will return next year, with out the power he’s no better than an average corner outfielder.

I agree that we were close the last few years,

But coming into this year not only do we have major holes still at DH and SS and a lot of questions in the lineup (will Rolen be healthy? can Rios hit for power? can verno stay healthy? Is Barajas a #1 catcher?) we’ve also lost our # 2 starter to free agency, #3 starter is questionable due to injury and our #4 starter is injured for the year…On top of that no one knows how much $ there will be to go around to fill all those holes…that is why I think now might be a good time to rebuild

I don't feel the hole is that big at SS

If Scoot can play defense at the level he did last year and if Cito would move him out of the lead off spot. I guess the question is what AL East team had a better SS last year? Jeter? His defense was awful and his offense wasn’t that much better than Scoot. Beyond the Boxscore had Jeter at 9th best SS and Scoot at 7th best. I’m not sure I agree but there wasn’t a big difference between the two if you consider defense. Lowrie? He will be better in the future but right now, I’d take Scoot. Bartlett? Beyond the Boxscore has Bartlett 20th among SS. Scoot is a little better offensively, BtB thinks he was a lot better defensively. And Baltimore just had a black hole at SS. So as much as I’d like better than Scoot, we could do worse. And I say this as someone who is not a fan of Scoot’s.

I think much the same about the catcher spot, what AL East team is much better at the catcher spot than we are? DH? We are better than we were last year just with Moonraker, but I’m hopeful we can pick up someone cheap before the season starts.

The starting pitching is a problem, but I really want to see Janssen take the ball every fifth day. I think he can be a number 2 type starter. Richmond was better than his numbers, I think he could be a fine number 5 guy. I’d like them to pick up a starter that could get us some innings but I’m not as worried as some. AJ’s ERA wasn’t much better than league average and he had a heck of a defense behind him.

Even if this season doesn’t go well, 2010 should be good with Marcum back and the young guys a year further along.

You would take Scoot over Lowrie?

Not me, Lowrie can play. My guess is he works himself into the starting SS job in no time.

I’m also not ready to rebuild yet. This team was too good last season, and the biggest pieces will be back, other than Marcum. Sure, A.J. will be gone but his production last season is replaceable and the draft picks will help restock the farm too. If Wells and Rolen are healthy, Overbay has a decent season offensively, Hill comes back strong, and Rios shows a bit more pop, those things coupled with Lind and Snider hopefully emerging and another year of shutdown bullpen could make the Jays a very good team in 09 and 2010. We could also be mediocre both seasons, since we are relying on a lot of things going right, not to mention some players on the other side of 30, but I wouldn’t pull the plug. You could run a team for years and not come across a pitcher like Halladay. I’d rather use the A.J. money to extend Doc than let him go.

yeah you are right, I'd take Lowrie....

Was looking too much at Beyond the Boxscore’s rankings that had Lowrie at 21st among SS. Likely next year he’ll be above Scoot, but maybe not by all that much.

Not entirely convinced on Lowrie

at least not for next year. but let’s just be glad they dont have Hanley Ramirez.

I agree with that

maybe not by all that much

I have to say though

I would love to get Loney (another first rounder drafted after Russ Adams in 2003) – he became one of my favorite non-Jays this season, and then a recent article in Fangraphs about likely he was to break out next season made me even more excited

Rumour

Jays and Mets talked about BJ Ryan…JP asked for Fernando Martinez, I’m sure Omar Minaya laughed in his face…

The article I read (Courtesy of MLBTRADERUMORS.COM) is a little more politically correct and just states that the Mets don’t want to trade F-Mart.

nice try, J.P.

Why would the Mets give up their top prospect for Ryan when they can sign K-Rod, Fuentes, or Wood for about the same annual salary (though maybe another year or two) and give up just the pick?

that's not to say that Ryan is worth nothing to the Mets

but I’d start by asking for Daniel Murphy and Ramon Castro for him if I were JP. Castro will do a nice job in part time duty for the Jays, and Murphy is a decent-looking 3B prospect blocked by Wright and being tried at second base. We don’t need him there, but could use his versatility in the outfield this season before seeing if he’s the guy to take Rolen’s job. Those two players and the salary savings, which would allow the Jays to go get Bradley, would make the deal worthwhile to the Jays, wouldn’t it?

Like it

I like your thinking Hugo…Castro and Murphy would be a great return for Ryan…

hit post too soon

Murphy could start in AAA and take over for Rolen after 2009…or if hot he’ll take over when Rolen gets injured.
