Detroit Tigers Ivan Rodriguez C Placido Polanco 2b Gary Sheffield dh Magglio Ordonez lf Miguel Cabrera 3b Carlos Guillen 1b Edgar Renteria ss Marcus Thames rf Brandon Inge cf Pitching: Kenny Rogers, LHP |
Toronto Blue Jays Shannon Stewart lf Aaron Hill 2b Alexis Rios rf Vernon Wells cf Frank Thomas dh Rod Barajas 1b Marco Scutaro 3b Greg Zaun c John Macdonald ss Pitching: David Purcey, LHP |
Hey all. Heading out for a quick run, will be back for gametime. Is Lyle hurt? If not, I submit that starting Rod Barajas instead of Lyle at first base is a dumb way to accomodate a rookie pitcher. Barajas has an under .300 lifetime OBP, even against lefties, and Overbay's defense would give him the nod even if they were similar offensively. Of course Lyle hasn't been swinging very well...
More importantly, let's go Purcey!!!!

This looks like our worst possible offensive configuration.
I did notice (and stated in a comment on the drunks’) that we’re 8-3 in front of our opponents’ fans and 0-5 in front of our own, and this is the other series the braintrust marketed to out-of-towners.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wait, I just noticed Pudge is leading off
That’s awesome and hilarious.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And he doubles down the line on the second pitch
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
The first base line
so Barajas wouldn’t have had a chance on it pretty much anywhere.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Now walks Polanco
I don’t think he’s thrown a ball in the strike zone so far. The hit and the foul balls I think were misses too.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Finally throws a strike
Curve on the outside corner
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gets Sheffield swinging
chasing the high cheese
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Walks Ordonez to load the bases for Cabrera
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
2-0 to Cabrera
Meeting on the mound
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Sac fly to center
Wells doesn’t try to gun him down at the plate
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
wild pitch
ugh. checking in for a bit.
Gets the weak grounder to strand two
I’ll be honest, with Barajas protecting Thomas, one run seems like a high mountain to climb.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Purcey is going to allow a lot more
i’m not that high on Purcey…
Stew walks on 4 straight
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill with the infield fly
Better than the GIDP, at least
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios flies to right
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Purcey
Purcey isn’t ready for the majors. His career minor league stats are horrible, and his stuff doesn’t project all that well.
What will happen with Zach Jackson, by the way? The Brewers seem to have too much depth for him to get a call-up.
At least he's riding the crest of a wave
with his fast start this year after a good AFL season.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I wasn't too high on Jackson
never been spectactular at AAA. At best a #5.
A real life #5?
Or the league average #3 people mean when they say #5?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Real life #5
Jackson had his chance…. most likely ends up in long relief.
Wells strands Stew with the fly to right center
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That was an interesting wild pitch
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
This will be a looooong night
4 walks already ouch.
Tight strike zone?
Rogers had that leadoff walk too.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
some of his pitches
aren’t even close…
And others are
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I'm surprised they bunted
we needed an out.
Strikes out Pudge on several straight curves
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Walks them loaded
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zaun is getting a big workout
he’s assuming the pitch is going to sail everytime…
Nice strikeout
5 stranded so far
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Let's get a 1-2-3
inning now.
Niemann
Niemann’s another prospect who’s been around for a while. He’s faring much better against the White Sox.
The Devil Rays are like the Quebec Nordiques of ‘90s – Eventually all those last-place finishes and subsequent high draft picks would create a huge stream of young talent. Only instead of changing cities before their huge breakout, they changed their team name.
haha
don’t feel bad, Mark. I complained about Barajas being in the lineup, and what does he do but go deep in his 1st at bat?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Missed Frank's AB for a pee break
How fast did he get himself out?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
first pitch
swingin, I think.
Barajas solo homer
I know those words, but that sentence doesn’t make any sense.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Can't hit it much harder than that
and still make an out.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hey y'all
just got back from my run. sounds like Purcey’s not looking too good
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
If you pretend he came in with the bases loaded both times
he’s no Jesse Carlson, but you’d take it in a pinch. Unfortunately he’s the one who loaded them.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zaun hitting it not nearly as hard
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Leadoff hitter makes an out
Thats a good start.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Purcey apparently has Hentgen's imprimatur
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Purcey allows his second hit
Both doubles.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Looked like a good play on the Baltimore Chop
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah, not bad
Purcey looked decent that inning
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
That's 6 runners stranded
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
nice play by Renteria
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
routine for Mac of course
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Stew looked like he was pulling up short of first
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I missed that
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Not like injured pulling up
like pulling up like you’re only supposed to do once you’re either actually out or have already crossed the bag
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
ah
he better watch out for Lind
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Can Lind hit switch now?
Otherwise I think Stairs will still have the majority of the starts.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lind shouldn't be considered a platoon player
he’s basically even.
would actually like to see both in the lineup sometimes
and give Thomas a little rest against the harder-throwing righties. Frank’s a good weapon to have on the bench because of his ability to get on base too.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
He's like two pinch hitters in one
because he requires a second to pinch run for him.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
true
but it’s the AL so you can afford to burn through your bench a bit. Gibbons loves to pinch-run, so he does it a lot anyway
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that's the thing about this team
they get into these ruts where they just don’t get good at-bats for innings on end
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that was a quick inning
set em down 123 Perce!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Giving up hard hit outs
Not the best sign
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
his 1st 1-2-3 inning though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Rios draws the free pass
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That was so slow developing
How was Rios not in the picture there?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios
is not exactly Charley Hustle
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
The ABCs of baserunning
Always be Çprinting.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Another hard hit out
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hmm gonna check gameday
some of the pitches were close.
I think Torgen is right
and the zone is a little tight. Of course, that should favor the Jays
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Because our pitcher would miss any zone?
Or because our hitters are “more” patient?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
because Rogers
relies on being able to hit the black, and theoretically, if he has to get more of the plate to get strikes, will get hammered.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
i gotta get ready
going out for a friends bday. have a good night and go jays!
that's it for Purcey
7 walks is atrocious, but plenty of guys have done worse in their first start
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
But he's no Jesse Litsch
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
definitely does make you appreciate Litsch
the poise he shows for his age, and his willingness to just throw strikes is nice to see
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
re:
He was fortunate not to give up more runs, but I’m happy for the guy. He probably had a bunch of family and friends cheering him on.
he's a lefty who throws mid 90s
so he should be able to stick in the majors if he can get his control under well, control. But it might be as a reliever.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Only 2 hits though
1 more than we have.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
big situation for Frasor
this game is still very winnable. We certainly have a much better pen than Detroit but we need to take more pitches to get there
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Bear in mind we only have a 6 man bullpen tonight
because Purcey is taking Wolfe’s spot. Unless Marcum is available.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
even for Gibby
that should be plenty, I’d think
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Unless we go to extras again
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
true
but you can’t manage the game expecting it to go 14 innings, can you?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
True
You can manage worrying that it will, but not expecting.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I can appreciate that
I’m a worst-case scenario kind of guy
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Frasor comes in and immediately gets the double play
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas plunked on the foot
Good outcome for an 0-2 count.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Ordonez had to reach out for that one
considering he slowed down for it
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
do you really
want to eat $35 worth of ballpark food?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Depends on the food
Not traditional ballpark food.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
true
but I can’t imagine the park offering up anything very good for a buffet thing
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I'm pretty sure it's hto dogs and stuff
although I think I remember them saying some of the club sections had a buffet with real food at some point.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Not this year
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
at the Nats new stadium
they have a taco truck outside the stadium with really good $2 tacos, you can’t beat that
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
The dogs at PacBell/SBC/AT&T park are good
Even the ones the wandering vendors have. Way better than Dodger Dogs (which I had several of the preceding weekend). Not healthy, but good.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
that's a great park
too bad the Giants are so terrible, but at least they offer 2 good young exciting pitchers. Watching Lincecum pitch is a blast
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Unfortunately if you're going up from the south bay
the train arrives barely in time for the game (by design) and leaves not too long after it’s over, so you don’t get to see much of the park but your seat.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
going to baltimore for games by train
from DC is the same
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
cmon Stew
just a good at-bat
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that'll do!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I'm eager to see this
the video feed is a little behind your comments.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Yeah, I'd say a triple is a positive outcome
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
How shallow was Inge playing?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
too shallow
it was a solid hit, but shouldn’t have gone all the way to the wall. I think inge was also shaded to left
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Stew's groin pull came on his assist?
His groin died a hero!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill follows up
too bad Purcey couldn’t make it through 5
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
But if he'd tried
a 3 run inning might not have got us the lead.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Tigers
get one back
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I think they need to get Frasor out of this one
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gibby chooses now
to show confidence in him
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Accardo
completes the inning. I guess the plan is to use some combination of Accardo, Downs, and Tallet for the 7th and 8th and then go to Beej for the 9th?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Some nice patience there
7 pitch inning for Rogers.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Sheffield
taking advantage of Stewart’s arm a bit
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Blown Save for Accardo
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
we suck
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
A rare lapse for Johnny Mac
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gibbons
turns to Downs to stop the bleeding
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I hope he does
My ERA has improved to third, but I’m still dead last in WHIP, and my offense has stagnated recently. Also, I want the Jays to win.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
not much chance of that
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Accardo
What’s up with him this season? Have either of you noticed anything different in his delivery?
Splitter sucks
If he throws it they hit it. If he doesn’t they can sit fastball.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Leland bringing the righty
Pinch hit with Stairs?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill flies out leading off
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios first pitch swinging
What happened to that patience?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wells draws the walk
Obv not going to give him anything to hit with Frank on deck
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Are they holding Wells at all?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Frank fouls off some meatballs
and gets caught looking on the inside corner.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jones is a righty too?
Wonder why I thought he was a lefty.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Cabrera doubles
and then steals third?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Renteria with another RBI
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
There's no way Barajas is hitting here
Overbay, Stairs, and Inglett should all be hitting in this inning.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas is in there with the bat
Unless Overbay is hurt or Jones has reverse splits, this is serious Waning Gibbons.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Overbay pinch hitting for Scutaro
Then why is Barajas hitting?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas flies to center
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Overbay walks
I wish that had been leading off the inning instead of after a fly ball.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jones missing a lot
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zaun walks too
Why is there an out? Is Stairs unavailable?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Inglett flies out
and Stew grounds out. Where was Stairs?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
