Am I Making All the Right Moves? - Game 19: Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays

Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays, Apr 20, 2008 1:07 PM EDT

Sunday, April 20- Toronto, Ontario
1:07 PM (EDT)

Detroit Tigers
cf Clete Thomas
C Ivan Rodriguez
dh Carlos Guillen
rf Magglio Ordonez
1b Miguel Cabrera
lf Jacque Jones
ss Edgar Renteria
2b Ryan Rayburn
3b Brandon Inge

Pitching: Nate Robertson, LHP

Toronto Blue Jays

ss David Eckstein
2b Aaron Hill
rf Alexis Rios
cf Vernon Wells
dh Rod Barajas dh
lf Marco Scutaro
1b Lyle Overbay
c Greg Zaun
3b John Macdonald

Pitching: A.J. Burnett, RHP

Okay.  The love affair with Rod Barajas has to end, now.  I don't know where we got the idea that he is some sort of lefty masher.  Do they have him confused with Molina?  Rod Barajas, your number 5 hitter for this Sunday game.  And of course, if Zaun has to come out of the game for any reason, we have the choice of catching Scutaro or Mac or having the pitcher bat.  That's totally worth getting Barajas' lifetime .288 OBP smack into the middle of this lineup.  And is it me, or do we seem to be facing a lot of lefties early this year?  Maybe we should've stuck with Sparky...

The problem with Syracuse

Can’t get a guy here in time for a 1PM game if you release a hall-of-famer that morning.
Okay, that’s not the only problem with Syracuse.

I hate moves made just to save money.....

Makes it look like we aren’t interested in winning

by Tom Dakers on Apr 20, 2008 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

His hits, walks, Ks, groundouts, and fly outs were the same as last year

and I mean exactly the same. If he wasn’t going to heat up until the start of June again then releasing him wasn’t just a money-saving move.

he was

hitting as many infield flies as line drives. That’s not a recipe for much success

Maybe he needs a week off between starts more.

18 pitches through 1

None of them from the stretch, but he’ll have a hard time getting 20 strikeouts at this rate.

by achengy on Apr 20, 2008 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

actually

I think there might be some legal problems with Bonds – since he’s under federal indictment – leaving the US and playing in Canada.

I think this was addressed in court

his lawyer insisted he be able to keep his passport and leave town and such because it was necessary for his career. Also, his trial isn’t going to be until after the season, and is he a flight risk? He’s so recognizable.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on Apr 20, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

He was allowed to keep his US passport

but the US can’t control whether Canada lets him in. They probably would for a short series, but not necessarily to play for the Jays for the season.

by Torgen on Apr 20, 2008 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

.078

He only pitched one. Carlson got 4 outs, including the first of the 7th, and Camp got 5. My usual threshold is .100, although I’ll give it to someone who’s in the .09s if there’s someone just above .100 who’s getting it.

Jays of the Day

I agree, Torgen. Hill is a little low at under .100, but both he and Eckstein played some good defense so I think he should be recognized. Accardo certainly deserves honourable mention for a much better performance.
