Am I Making All the Right Moves? - Game 19: Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays
Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays, Apr 20, 2008 1:07 PM EDT
Sunday, April 20- Toronto, Ontario
1:07 PM (EDT)
Detroit Tigers cf Clete Thomas C Ivan Rodriguez dh Carlos Guillen rf Magglio Ordonez 1b Miguel Cabrera lf Jacque Jones ss Edgar Renteria 2b Ryan Rayburn 3b Brandon Inge Pitching: Nate Robertson, LHP |
Toronto Blue Jays ss David Eckstein 2b Aaron Hill rf Alexis Rios cf Vernon Wells dh Rod Barajas dh lf Marco Scutaro 1b Lyle Overbay c Greg Zaun 3b John Macdonald Pitching: A.J. Burnett, RHP |
Okay. The love affair with Rod Barajas has to end, now. I don't know where we got the idea that he is some sort of lefty masher. Do they have him confused with Molina? Rod Barajas, your number 5 hitter for this Sunday game. And of course, if Zaun has to come out of the game for any reason, we have the choice of catching Scutaro or Mac or having the pitcher bat. That's totally worth getting Barajas' lifetime .288 OBP smack into the middle of this lineup. And is it me, or do we seem to be facing a lot of lefties early this year? Maybe we should've stuck with Sparky...

The problem with Syracuse
Can’t get a guy here in time for a 1PM game if you release a hall-of-famer that morning.
Okay, that’s not the only problem with Syracuse.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
They haven't said
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
His hits, walks, Ks, groundouts, and fly outs were the same as last year
and I mean exactly the same. If he wasn’t going to heat up until the start of June again then releasing him wasn’t just a money-saving move.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he was
hitting as many infield flies as line drives. That’s not a recipe for much success
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
He had more infield flies last year than this through as many PAs
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Clete Thomas works the count full
But Burnett blows the heater past him.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Strikes out Pudge too
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Strikes out the side
Looking for Guillen
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Maybe he needs a week off between starts more.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
18 pitches through 1
None of them from the stretch, but he’ll have a hard time getting 20 strikeouts at this rate.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Broken bat double down the left field line for x
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill bunting in the first?
I hope that wasn’t meant to be a straight sacrifice
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill's Duck fart
takes second because nobody covers. x can’t score because of the risk of the fly
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
1 for 1 with RISP!
0 RBIs
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
They scored that a double?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios grounds to short
Now 1 for 2 with RISP, but with 1 RBI.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill steals third
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
He's had a better week than Thomas
Ride the hot bat.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
It is a lefty on the mound
and Overbay hasn’t caught up to a lefty yet this year.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
that was a little disappointing
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
1 pitch, one out
Thanks, Mags.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
didn't mention anyone
it’s obviously Lind.
Unless we managed a quickie contract with Bonds
and no, I don’t think that’s likely.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Godfrey
absolutely hates Bonds. I doubt it. If you ever watch the Canadianshow Off the Record, you’ll know there’s a 0% chance of that happening.
actually
I think there might be some legal problems with Bonds – since he’s under federal indictment – leaving the US and playing in Canada.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I think this was addressed in court
his lawyer insisted he be able to keep his passport and leave town and such because it was necessary for his career. Also, his trial isn’t going to be until after the season, and is he a flight risk? He’s so recognizable.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
He was allowed to keep his US passport
but the US can’t control whether Canada lets him in. They probably would for a short series, but not necessarily to play for the Jays for the season.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
He hasn't been convicted of anything yet.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Marketing to Detroit fans
didn’t fill up the 500 level
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Johnny Mac just short of a web gem
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Burnett's index finger with the black nail polish
isn’t it the middle finger that’s the fake one?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Another walk on a close pitch
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
At some point they have to decide to put Stewart on the DL...
Scoot in left is giving up a lot of offense….
Quick flyout from Thomas
Funny saying that only about the other team
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Curve is reallly biting today
Be nice to see a called strike with it
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lost Pudge on three straight curves
but at least he’s not giving up on it. Maybe it’s time for the change, though.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Missed for ball 4 in the same spot all the other ball 4s missed
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Strike 1 gets a cheer
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
The no-hitter is intact
Of course at this rate it will be a combined no-hitter.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he's definitely got the 57-foot curve
going today
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Can he not just aim it higher?
If it’s consistently short, you’d think there wouldn’t be much risk of hanging it.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
his mechanics are probably way off
he would probably sail a few if he tried.
Hill 2 for 2
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
if we cut Frank
and end up using Barajas as DH instead, I might become a NASCAR fan
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
or there's always MLS season
which just started

Good day to watch
It’s a road course, so everyone will crash on the first right turn.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios and Wells strand Hill
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Loving those quick outs
when he can get them
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he will need some more
if he hopes to go seven
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I have this theory that the Blue Jays media
isn’t allowed to say anything nice about Burnett
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Doesn't want to jinx it?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
There it goes
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That curve was closer
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That curve wasn't close
C’mon, throw the change!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Looks like they're catching up to the fastball
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Helps that that one was 95
and not the 97 or 98 he was getting in the first.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Just not getting that outside call
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That one was less close
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Shallow fly ball for the second out
no chance at the sac fly
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Fooled Thomas with that curve for strike 2
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
The next few curves, not so much
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gameday said it was right down the middle
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
After the first curve he swung over
he was sitting fastball. Need better location than that if you’re going to get it past him there. Or at least, you do if you’re down to 95 and not up at 98.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Yuck
2 run single
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Three pitch strikeout of Pudge
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I'm not very impressed
if you walk that many, you’re going to have all kinds of problems, no matter how good your fastball is. And AJ’s has already lost a little bite from earlier in the game.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
And he's given up on the change
Surprising nobody, but still in stark contrast to what he said.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Overbay with a second hit vs. a letfy pitcher this year
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
1 for 4 so far this game with RISP
let’s see how Zaun fares.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
makes us 1 for 5
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wish someone would explain the concept of small samples to these guys...
lefties are 11 for 25 against Robinson this year…..
Johnny mac makes us 2 for 6
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That's pretty good
A 3 run homer is always a hit with RISP
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
the little guy goes deep!
also good to see Lyle with a hard line drive hit off a lefty, and Mac has looked good at the plate today as well.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Hill with another line drive
this one for an out
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Burnett needs a quick inning if he wants the win
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Yeah, Rance? AJ's not pitching the 6th.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
99, 52 strikes
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
With Doc it made sense
because Purcey was going to give him the extra day off.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Also, Rance? BJ pitched yesterday
I don’t think he’s available today.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Loses Mags after an 0-2 start
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
C'mon, AJ, nice ground ball double play here
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That's not a double play
that’s an RBI double
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
At least Jones grounded out quickly
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Now he has the curve working
A few innings too late
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
AJ in line for the win
with the Renteria fly ball. Insurance runs would be appreciated.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah.....tough work for the pen ahead....
anyone think gibbons will leave him out for the start of the next inning?
No
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
In the middle of the season
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I remember him hitting a homer on one of those last year
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Ugh, VW, don't swing at that
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas flies out on the 0-2
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
2-0, rather
Much worse
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
For us or them?
For us it was Camp at first, then Carlson
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zach Miner for them
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Overbay with a good chance
to improve our 3 for 7 with RISP this game
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That is not an improvement
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Good play Johnny Mac
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Inge pops straight up for out 2
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Thomas bloops it to shallow center
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Carlson is money right now
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hard to really criticize Johnny Mac's bunt
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
x didn't get it done there
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Carlson
5-3 is a high leverage opportunity for a reliever. Has he stolen the set up job already?
In the 6th
I would guess no.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
we used to see Tallet here often
but yeah a little early.
3 for 10 with RISP
Still an improvement
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Next three hitters switch, right, right
Leaving Carlson out for a second, or who from the pen?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Sticking with Carlson
Fourth hitter is left, then three straight right again.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Blows it by Guillen
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Here comes Camp
Hope his Changeup is all it’s cracked up to be.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Left him in for the switch hitter, I guess
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That looks like late movement
Ordoñez had no idea.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
geeze we sure had the wrong guys in the pen to start the season
if this is how camp and carlson pitch….
Shaun and Jesse's Awesome Show
Great Job
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Yeah, make it a moot point whether BJ is available
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios fouled off ball 4 there
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Driving up the starter's pitch count is always great
With relievers it doesn’t tend to affect how long they stay in, only how long before they pitch again, which tends to benefit you less.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
After so many fastballs
he couldn’t hold up on the changeup.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas also working a good AB
but it ends with a groundout.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I don't think BJ can go back to back days yet
so I figure Downs will close it out.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Good for Camp getting the out off Jones
Now it’s three straight righties.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Ugh... Renteria to first on a strikeout
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Accardo is warming up
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Scoot draws the walk
Overbay to bat against another lefty
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Downs did pitch yesterday
How many did he throw? He might not be available.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Overbay grounds into the double play
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Now that double play hurts
With Zaun singling up the middle
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Against 9-1-2 no less
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Well Inge historically crushes lefties
though not so far this year.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
There's no way someone can get warm in time
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Looks like it
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
So we stay ahead of the Yankees
Who were beating the Orioles when last I checked.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rain delay in the 8th there, BTW
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
woot

JotD
Camp, Carlson, x, Mac, Hill?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
True, he was .300 WPA
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
.078
He only pitched one. Carlson got 4 outs, including the first of the 7th, and Camp got 5. My usual threshold is .100, although I’ll give it to someone who’s in the .09s if there’s someone just above .100 who’s getting it.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jays of the Day
I agree, Torgen. Hill is a little low at under .100, but both he and Eckstein played some good defense so I think he should be recognized. Accardo certainly deserves honourable mention for a much better performance.

Have you considered using the Google Chart API
to make the JotD chart?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I haven't considered it, no
but I am very open to the idea. Do you recommend trying it out?

It's pretty easy to make good-looking charts with it

Josh Ritter baby!
Nice Ritter quote, my friend!
