Home is Where I Want to Be, Pick Me Up and Turn Me Round: Game 4, April 4, 2008 - Boston at Toronto
Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays, Apr 4, 2008 7:15 PM EDT
Today's title courtesy of one of my favourite all-time bands, the Talking Heads, and their tune "Naive Melody." After a tough 1-2 series loss to the Yankees, the Jays' schedule ain't getting any easier, but at least the confines are friendlier. Toronto heads home to play their home opener against the Boston Red Sox who have gotten off to a 3-1 start despite some jet lag from their Japan trip.
Tim Wakefield, who has given the Jays a ton of trouble over the past few years, pitches for Boston while Shaun Marcum makes his first 2008 for the Jays. No word yet on whether Marcum has acquired a monkey now that the team is up in T.O.

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Ugh

I'm afraid, at least we got some runs first
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Hopefully the wait doesn't screw him up
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
particularly as he is facing the big fellas
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Zaun, no grounders plskthx
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
South By Southwest was terrific by the way, Chengy
you've gotta go next year. I think i'll be going every year
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Which bands did you see?
I may wait until I'm 21 which is another 2 years so I can see everything.
that makes sense
too many bands to mention, but the shackeltons, weakerthans, old 97s, spoon, fire flies, ingrid michaelson, hallelujah! the hills, tulsa, my morning jacket, talib kweli, okkervil river are a few that are coming to mind right now
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Cool
Heard quite a bit about most of the bands. Recently heard of tulsa but haven't tried listening to them yet. Too bad I have exams because I'm missing Okkervil River and the New pornos.
Tulsa was good
great songwriting, good musicians, pretty twangy
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
good luck on your exams by the way
are you in Orgo? Organic, Genetidcs and Calc III the same semester my sophomore year near killed me
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Yeah
Struggling a bit this year.. mostly Bs this year. Genetics I really like though, Biochemistry and Orgo = not cool.
Genetics was great
but hard. Biochem was okay, I had a good prof. Orgo was ridiculous. We had like a dozen nervous breakdowns in our class, literally
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
reactions are killing me
a bajillon reactions/reagents/mechanisms.. I'm surprised I haven't heard about more breakdowns.
you canadians must be made of sterner stuff
than we yanks
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Marcum gets Youk swinging
on pitch 5
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Steeles looks fine
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
ah
issues his first walk to Ortiz
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
forgivable
woot with the strikeout on ManRam.
woot is right
lowell follows with a cheap hit
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Lowell bloop single
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Tallet warming
with the 2-0 count on Drew
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
crap
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
gets lugo to end the inning
still has a chance to win if the Jays can score some runs, but I doubt Marcum will be out again for the 8th
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
That run hurt
the one we lost via the Zaun GIDP.
so far
we look like last season offensively - not capitalizing on opportunities and too many DPs, hopefully it's just a little glitch to start the season
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
So this Aardsma guy
are we going to crush him?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
if only
he was a lefty. Besides the change in speed will be hard to adjust to.
Well x is giving them a long look
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I also
don't want to jynx it.
x is being gritty
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
LOL at the run
it's supposed to be a walk!
that was
a great at-bat
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Pulling Aardsma for a lefty
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
will we hit for stairs?
with stew?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Nice hit by Stew
although helped by Pedroia not keeping the ball in his glove
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
stew moves Eck over
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I kinda hate this part of baseball
pitching change after pitching change makes for boring TV.
true
the tension created by this kind of inning is pretty awesome though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
me too
it's why I can't watch nfl football
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Football preempted too many episodes of Futurama
for me to ever like it.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
what a great show
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Thanks to it we can rag on Farnsworth
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Another pitcher
to face the Golden Boy.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
C'mon Lexi!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
delcarmen
has a great arm
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
ugh
awful at-bat
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
what the hell?!
up to Frank now
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Frank takes it to the wall!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
WOOT!!!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Mac to run for Thomas
a little strange it wasn't Coats.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
moot anyway as Overbay grounds out to end it
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
If they really need a defensive replacement for Stew?
Of course now they're in trouble if they need to replace Scutaro.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
could put J-mac in at 3rd and move scoot to left I guess
he played there enough with Oakland
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I mean if they had used coats and needed to replace stew
of course
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I would rather have seen Coats
if anything an infielder could play outfield.
and Coats is quite a bit faster than Mac, no?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Tallet in
gets Crisp
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Varitek hitting for cash
no surprise there
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Unaware of the splits?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
most likely
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Cash is...
not a great hitter, or else we would've kept him lol.
did you notice
Guillermo Quiroz is B-more's backup this season?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Doesn't seem like the kind of thing I'd notice
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he was once
Toronto's catcher of the future
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that probably needed quotes
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
What was the quote?
The road to third place is littered with catchers of the future.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
we're living proof of that
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I thought it referred directly to us.
But Thigpen/Diaz/Jeroloman/Arencibia, they're for real, right?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Thigpen
seems like he might not get much of a chance, the Jays seem to like Diaz better, and I can't see them using two young catchers next season. Jeroloman supposedly won't hit enough to be a regular catcher but will be a great backup. Arencibia could be the real deal too though, and of course you never know. Another guy to watch is Joel Collins.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I thought Jeroloman had a ridiculous walk rate
which would be his ticket to the majors.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
it will be, definitely
if he can hit enough to keep pitchers honest
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
How good is good enough?
.250 with a .400 OBP?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
not many singles hitters
can manage that b/c pitchers don't want to walk them. but it's definitely a great skill for Jeroloman
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
yeah which suggests
that even if he doesn't ever hit, he can be a capable back up with his ability to get on base.
Oh right
I forgot about that. I didn't pay much attention to when he was being heralded but he looked decent at the times I saw him.
Tallet gets "C"
swinging
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
It's the 8th
why are two non-Accardo pitchers warming?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
w00t
Pedroia flies out. Tallet really seems to have Gibbons' trust, which is interesting considering the opposite seemed true last season
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I had a great Jason Frasor joke
which is relevant because he was warming. I figured there'd come a point in the season where he'd change his entrance music to the chorus of The Feeling's "Love It When You Call."
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
heh
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Or one of the verses
The one that goes, "Remember me? I used to be / Your best-time buddy that you couldn't wait to see."
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill singles off two sox
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Scoot bunts Hill to second
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
not sure about the bunt there
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
well Zaun
is good from the left side.
Yeah, if the bunt is neutral, the handedness advantage might swing it
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
good point
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Campbell talking about the pin lady
without referring to the pins.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zaun got the lefty strike zone there
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
X gonna give it to ya!
They should really play some DMX when he comes up.
Xavier Nady
played that song with the mets when he came up
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Eck!
between his last two at-bats, he's winning me over
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
How's that bunt looking now?
Because results-based thinking never leads you astray.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
works for me
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Facing 2-3-4
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
not an easy assignment
hope he uses the 3-run cushion and doesn't start walking folks
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Quick out to Youk
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
youk lines out
2 to go
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
gets ortiz with the count full
