Jumping Someone Else's Train: Game 5, April 5, 2008 - Boston at Toronto

Boston @ Toronto

The Jays won their home opener last night in their throwback powder blues behind some great pitching from Shaun Marcum, a timely assist from the pen, and some good hitting. Marcum was stellar, striking out 8 over his 7 innings and surrendering only 3 hits and 1 walk. His one blip occurred in the 7th inning. He got Youkilis to lead off the inning, but then walked Ortiz. Marcum came back to strike out Manny, but then Lowell blooped a single. Marcum had made J.D. Drew look foolish in his previous two at-bats, but not this time. Drew took a Marcum mistake and neatly deposited it above the high right field wall. This tied the score at 3, but not for long.

Jamie Campbell favorite David Eckstein led off the next inning and worked an 11-pitch at-bat into a leadoff walk (sprint), and Shannon Stewart, batting for Matt Stairs, followed up with a single. Alex Rios and Vernon Wells followed with terrible at-bats, both making first-pitch outs, but Frank Thomas followed up with a gapper to give the Jays the lead for good and preserve a well-deserved win for Marcum. Tallet and Accardo nailed down the win to knot the Jays' record at 2-2.

Today, the Jays take on the Sox again, as a couple of young pitchers face off. Clay Buchholz pitches for Boston while Jesse Litsch pitches for the Jays. Litsch kept his ERA very low last season (3.81) but his low strikeout rate makes some question whether he'll be able to keep that up, even with the Jays good infield defense. Litsch had some trouble with lefties last season but has added a 2-seamer to help him with the lefties. There's a great long interview with him in Behind the Dish , a great free weekly digi mag featuring excellent work by the incomparable Marc Hulet.

Anyway, on to the lineups:

right there with you

although there's no denying he's overexposed as a starting third baseman

Litsch is getting great defense...

He needs it...but I thought that Wells should have caught that fly ball....

Gotta love Jamie Campbell

'Thomas has got to motor' going for third. 'Here's the relay'...ummmmm no Jamie....that was a soft toss into second.....If Crisp was trying to throw out Thomas at third he wouldn't have hit the cut off man on the first base side of second....he'd have thrown to the shortstop third base side of second.

Overbay to the rescue again

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on Apr 5, 2008 2:02 PM EDT   0 recs

just got back from a run. how's Litsch looking?

I wish Gibbons would use Macdonald at short for Litsch...

He needs all the defense help he can get.....

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 2:18 PM EDT   0 recs

we have so many groundball pitchers

you could make a case for Mac to start at SS most days

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 2:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

haha who does?

although eckstein had 2 nice at-bats in the last few innings yesterday, including an 11 pitch walk. you don't see many at-bats like that from Mac

Yeah....a couple of nice at bats...and the team needs a lead off man but.....how old is he now? He's not going to improve.....

Nice bunt Hill....

I really like the Red Sox Management...

But why would you sign Sean Casey?

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 2:29 PM EDT   0 recs

it doesn't make much sense, does it?

maybe they were trying to repeat their Mientenciewz magic

Hope the bullpens holds

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 2:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Hmmmmm

As a Jays fan I love the call but as a baseball fan I wish they could have a better camera view...and maybe someone that could discribe the play decent...If Tabler says 'it started foul and went fair' I'm going to throw something at the tv

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:02 PM EDT   0 recs

jays are taking advantage of calls going there way, and boston micues, Im lovin it

by tannman on Apr 5, 2008 3:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Who said Varitek was a good catchers....

That was just plain lazy.....

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:04 PM EDT   0 recs

haha, well he has went to the dirt on so many occassions this game

by tannman on Apr 5, 2008 3:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Would be nice if he had a good start to the season

Have no feel for how Wells is going to do this year....

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Wells

Wells is gonna be fine, I have no concerns about him one bit.

by tannman on Apr 5, 2008 3:24 PM EDT   0 recs

Do you ever check out the fan 590 website.. Mike Wilner's blog?

by tannman on Apr 5, 2008 3:26 PM EDT   0 recs

I reccommend

Its good reading, he's highly opinionated...
He hates bunting and SB, I love that the jays are playing this way though

by tannman on Apr 5, 2008 3:28 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah Expos were my team

saw Monday's hit in a mall.....left school to watch a TV at Sears.....will never forgive baseball for screwing that city

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:35 PM EDT   0 recs

I hear ya

94 strike still fresh in my mind. Took me awhile to get on with the Jays, nut I am fully converted now

by tannman on Apr 5, 2008 3:37 PM EDT   0 recs

I cheer Jays

or who ever might beat the Yankees out. Made my pilgramage to Yankee Stadium ld last year. Enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Took the stadium tour and sat one game in the bleachers and one in good seats. Great fun chatting with everyone around us.

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:39 PM EDT   0 recs

what sort of throw was that?

Pedroia didn't make that close

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:44 PM EDT   0 recs

I'd love to go to Fenway...

But figured they were tearing down Yankee stadium....House that Ruth Built.. Just figured as a baseball fan I ought to see it....

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:46 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm in Calgary....

So the trip to New York was a big deal for us.....I really enjoyed it....people were very nice to us. Almost thought I was missed the New York experiance, not one person was nasty. And my oldest son wore his Red Sox cap all the time.

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

We had the Cannons....they were Seattle's Triple A team....

But they left to New Mexico....we have a independant league team...the Vipers....is fun ball to watch but you aren't goign to see any future major leagers.

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 3:55 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah vipers are here still

We had Darryl Brinkly last year...he was 38...played a handful of games with the Mariners years ago. He hit .400 and lead the team to the league championship.

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 4:00 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah.....

didn't do the greatest last year....the weather in the early part of the season wasn't great. But as the seaon went on they did ok. I'm going to get to more games this year...just made a couple last year.

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 4:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Yankees are losing 6 to 3

And are down to their last two outs....jays win and yanks loss is about a perfect day

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 4:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Now I'm going to hope the Tigers continue losing....

their game is on fox for me.....but I think I've likely pushed sitting around watching ball as long as I can
have a good night.

by rincewind on Apr 5, 2008 4:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Great game

sorry I missed the last half of it. Litsch had some control problems early, was probably a little gunshy. I liked the two walks from Wells, and of course it's great to see Thomas getting comfortable. A sweep tomorrow would be sweet, and with Doc pitching we can't let them off the hook!

Oh, and Jays of the Day

Going by WPA (trying to be fair since I missed half the game, it is Zaun, Overbay, Tallet, and Eckstein in that order.

I have to say, I was prepared to dislike Eckstein because of all the hype he gets from dumb sportscasters, but I'm kinda digging him. I still would like to see Mac in the late innings though.
