Did a Large Procession, Wave Their Torches as My Head Fell in the Basket, and Was Everybody Dancing on the Casket? Game 29, Toronto at Boston

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox, May 1, 2008 7:05 PM EDT

I won't be around for the game today, as my band, has a gig. A.J. Burnett will face off against Tim Wakefield, who the Jays have historically stunk against but who they hit well earlier this season. The Jays are trying to avoid the sweep, and even if they do manage to avoid the sweep like they did against K.C., does it really matter?

Depends how they do it

If they get runners into scoring position and then get hits, then yes. If they score on wild pitches and solo homers and go 1 for 7 with RISP, then no.

Lefties don't fare well against Wakefield

Of course most lefties are natural righties, while Lind and Overbay are natural lefties.

Hmm... actually

ERA better against lefties, but peripherals worse.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe that's a better explanation?

Because Lind and Overbay are natural lefties, they wouldn’t expect to have the same success most lefties have?

I knew that you would

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

well.....you think Scoot is better than Overbay against Wakefield....

Or for that matter Stew over Lind….Barajas over….well I’ll give that one cause Zaun likely could use a day off….

by Tom Dakers on May 1, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Overbay 1 for 7 with 1 walk last year

Zaun 1 for 8, Lind 1 for 6 against Wakefield.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Small samples....

if Gibby thinks 1 for 6 or 1 for 8 means anything he is an idiot…..

by Tom Dakers on May 1, 2008 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently he was .455 against Wakefield

I guess 5 for 11? Didn’t look like he faced him last year; was 2 for 3 earlier this year.

x draws the walk

breaking up the perfect game

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 7:07 PM EDT reply actions

Even if lefties in general don't fare well against lefties

I don’t think that means that Scooter/Stewart will be better than Kyle/Lind

by SuckaMD on May 1, 2008 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Wakefield isn't a lefty

Sorry

First post, first mistake

That should say “even if lefties don’t fare well against Wakefield”

And Kyle=Lyle, after my favourite Jays radio commercial from a couple years back

Just flashed on screen

Jays 3/16 (.188) with bases loaded on season

But solid hit from Rios, good play by Manny

So 1 for 5 tonight

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply actions

Jays hired a new batting coach this year

Gary Denbo. Could it be that we were actually better off with Brantley?

I probably would have him on a bit of a short leash at this point, though granted it is still somewhat early. Certainly I would make sure he is doing SOMETHING to try to reverse the trend

by SuckaMD on May 1, 2008 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

AJ gives up a single to Ortiz

then walks Manny. Not a good start.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 8:14 PM EDT reply actions

Making them 0 for 4

And then the 4 unassisted double play makes them 0 for 5. In other words, don’t complain about our 1 just yet.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

Well at least there's the sac fly

but that should be the third run

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Ugh... walks Manny, giving them more RISP chances.

by Tom Dakers on May 1, 2008 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

2 for 9

Maybe if that’s not the catcher it would have been number 3.

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Tried to hit and run

x drops his bat whiffing and Overbay is caught stealing. Ugh.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair, I think he lost his bat swinging it into the ground

with the pitch being as low as it was.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

x grounds slowly to the right side

which might not have been so bad had he not been forced to swing at an unhittable pitch in the dirt on the hit and run. 2 for 10.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

The Beej is in

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

And Frasor throwing

in what I can only assume is a case of getting his work in.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

It takes a million pitches

but the Beej strikes out Manny

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

Lowell flies out

requiring much fewer pitches

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

Beej walks Moss

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Crisp pops up to right

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Wait, no

apparently BJ balked?

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Gibby gets tossed for arguing, obviously

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

This confused Gameday, obviously

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Crisp singles

Moss to third. C’mon, guys, no drama.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

BJ gets the strikout to strand them all

So they went 1 for 9 and didn’t score on the 1.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 1, 2008 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

JotD

AJ (.478). Nobody else was very high. Rolen had the RBI, but he also grounded into a double play, and by the time we got the insurance runs, there wasn’t much chance for anyone to steal WPA from AJ.
