Did a Large Procession, Wave Their Torches as My Head Fell in the Basket, and Was Everybody Dancing on the Casket? Game 29, Toronto at Boston
Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox, May 1, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
I won't be around for the game today, as my band, has a gig. A.J. Burnett will face off against Tim Wakefield, who the Jays have historically stunk against but who they hit well earlier this season. The Jays are trying to avoid the sweep, and even if they do manage to avoid the sweep like they did against K.C., does it really matter?

Depends how they do it
If they get runners into scoring position and then get hits, then yes. If they score on wild pitches and solo homers and go 1 for 7 with RISP, then no.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Idiot stick Gibby has Stewart, Barajas and Scoot (playing 1B yet) in the line up....
Glad I’ll be missing all but the start of this one…...
Lefties don't fare well against Wakefield
Of course most lefties are natural righties, while Lind and Overbay are natural lefties.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hmm... actually
ERA better against lefties, but peripherals worse.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Maybe that's a better explanation?
Because Lind and Overbay are natural lefties, they wouldn’t expect to have the same success most lefties have?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I knew that you would
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
well.....you think Scoot is better than Overbay against Wakefield....
Or for that matter Stew over Lind….Barajas over….well I’ll give that one cause Zaun likely could use a day off….
Overbay 1 for 7 with 1 walk last year
Zaun 1 for 8, Lind 1 for 6 against Wakefield.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Didn't Earl Weaver play matchups like that all the time
including minor league stats if he had them?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
You comparing Gibby to Weaver?
Yeah he’d put Belanger leading off against some pitchers….someone did a study….Belanger hit almost nothing as a leadoff hitter those games…..
I'm comparing a move made by Gibby to a similar kind of move made by Weaver
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Apparently he was .455 against Wakefield
I guess 5 for 11? Didn’t look like he faced him last year; was 2 for 3 earlier this year.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
x draws the walk
breaking up the perfect game
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Even if lefties in general don't fare well against lefties
I don’t think that means that Scooter/Stewart will be better than Kyle/Lind
Wakefield isn't a lefty
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rolen grounds into the double play
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
VW gets plunked
Figure he’s running?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Didn't end up mattering
Hill walked on 4 pitches.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hill draws the walk
It’s RISP time!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Stew beats out the double play
0 for 1
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas flies to center stranding 2
0 for 2
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lowell doubles, breaking up the no-hitter
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Two fly balls and a lineout strand him
Sux are 0 for 3 with RISP.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios breaks up the no-hitter with a bloop
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios takes second without a throw
on a 2-0 fastball
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
x flies to right
0 for 3
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rolen singles to right
1 for 4. We have taken the lead in one game of baseball. Sound the horns!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Stairs pops out foul, stranding the Bet Jay Ever at first
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
AJ, why are you walking Cash?
Seriously, are you afraid he’s going to hit a challenge fastball?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Double play to end the inning
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Stew with the single
then up to third on the bad throw stealing. 2 outs, though
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Does a 4 pitch walk count?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wake has loss the touch on the Knuk.....
but alex scorches a batting practice fastball into Manny glove
So 1 for 5 tonight
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jays hired a new batting coach this year
Gary Denbo. Could it be that we were actually better off with Brantley?
I probably would have him on a bit of a short leash at this point, though granted it is still somewhat early. Certainly I would make sure he is doing SOMETHING to try to reverse the trend
AJ gives up a single to Ortiz
then walks Manny. Not a good start.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Making them 0 for 4
And then the 4 unassisted double play makes them 0 for 5. In other words, don’t complain about our 1 just yet.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
x with the leadoff bloop double
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rolen gets plunked
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That's a new one
1/1 on baserunning blunders with RISP
2 for 6, but only one run
awful
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Well at least there's the sac fly
but that should be the third run
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And 2 for 7 with the fly ball
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jamie and Tabler were all over Eck but to me rolen has to see where the guy in front of him is.....
yeah eck made a mistake but it shouldn’t have cost an out….
Hmmmm didn't look at what part of the line up was up when I called for the 3 runs....
3 quick outs with the sub ins…..
Ugh... walks Manny, giving them more RISP chances.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lowell flies out
0 for 6
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios homers over the monster
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hmmmm that's interesting....Put Overbay in for Scoot....would have thought they'd give Overbay the whole day off
If scoot was in for his 5 for 11
then once they figure he won’t see Wakefield again, mise take him out.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Figure Burnett stays out until he allows a baserunner?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hit one out! hit one out!
Not hit one and make an out!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
After that crash early in the season?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah could be eh? hmmmm.....he started good but....though I think watching him he doesn't seem to have a good plan at the plate....
Interestingly, he's been good when he puts the first pitch in play
which was a huge problem last year.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Awful lot of beach balls on the field tonight
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Come on Stew....prove me wrong.....
though I worry that if he gets a couple of bloop hits Gibby will use him more….
That's 2 for 8
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
2 for 9
Maybe if that’s not the catcher it would have been number 3.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Two quick outs and here comes Cy to face Ortiz
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Strike looking, strike looking, fly ball to right.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Overbay and Rios both single to lead off
will x bunt?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Tried to hit and run
x drops his bat whiffing and Overbay is caught stealing. Ugh.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
To be fair, I think he lost his bat swinging it into the ground
with the pitch being as low as it was.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
x grounds slowly to the right side
which might not have been so bad had he not been forced to swing at an unhittable pitch in the dirt on the hit and run. 2 for 10.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rolen grounds to second
2 for 11
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
The Beej is in
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And Frasor throwing
in what I can only assume is a case of getting his work in.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
It takes a million pitches
but the Beej strikes out Manny
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lowell flies out
requiring much fewer pitches
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Beej walks Moss
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Crisp pops up to right
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wait, no
apparently BJ balked?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gibby gets tossed for arguing, obviously
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
This confused Gameday, obviously
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Crisp singles
Moss to third. C’mon, guys, no drama.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
BJ gets the strikout to strand them all
So they went 1 for 9 and didn’t score on the 1.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
JotD
AJ (.478). Nobody else was very high. Rolen had the RBI, but he also grounded into a double play, and by the time we got the insurance runs, there wasn’t much chance for anyone to steal WPA from AJ.
