Blue Canary in the Outlet By The Light Switch, Who Watches Over You? Game 2 of the Doubleheader

Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Indians, May 12, 2008 8:05 PM EDT

So the lineups for the game being showed by SB Nation's content carrier are just the same as last game, which has got to be wrong, I'd imagine. But since the Jays haven't scored over the last 2 games and in fact have only managed 1 run in the 3 games so far in this series, it doesn't really matter what the lineup is, does it? Put it this way, to be watching the Jays at this point, you've got to have some pretty deep-seated emotional and/or mental issues. Allright, see everyone at gametime!

I don't think 'who watches over you' is a question in that lyric.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

it doesn't surprise me that you'd say that

but I disagree

Isn't the singer the blue canary?

I always thought there was more than one character

It's like, 'canary that watches over you'

except a canary is animate, and in this case sentient, so you say ‘who’.

Yeah, I get, I'm not an idiot

but you’re not going to convince me, I did a college paper on the song

Who would the other characters be?

by Torgen on May 12, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

in my paper

the question posed was who looks out for the blue canary when it’s so busy worrying about everyone else all the time?

by Torgen on May 12, 2008 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

certainly

the verses are the canary’s. I mean, he says “My name is Blue Canary”. Doesn’t get much clearer than that.

But if the chorus is sung to the bird

why does the bird need to make a birdhouse in his soul for the singer to live in (as the bee in the bird’s bonnet)? Is the singer also a bird?

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 12, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the other singer is God

telling the blue canary that he spends all of its time looking out for other people and neglects itself. Hence its need to carve out a little space in its soul for itself to be nurtured.

Seems like a huge stretch

Is there anything but the chorus that you think is the voice of God?

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

by Torgen on May 12, 2008 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nope

but it was a college english paper and I was an biochem and environmental science major, so I amused myself by deliberately taking out-there interpretations. I mean, if you’re going to do a paper on a They Might Be Giants song, you have to do something unexpected with it…

it doesn't have to be God anyway

just the idea that anyone whose job it is to take care of others all the time still needs looking after themselves…

indians fan here. sounds like you guys are going through the same kind of offense related despair that hit cleveland for most of april. with your pitching, it’s just a matter of time before the wins start picking up. here’s hoping that starts tomorrow! meanwhile, let’s hope for a fun nightcap.

I'm guessing the keep Butterfield

They like him enough that they’re putting up with Pevey, who’s no third-base coach, just to have Butterfield on the bench. I suppose Whitt could finish up the road trip too. In the long-term, I like the idea of Bobby Valentine, but I’m not sure why he would leave Japan, though I think he can opt out of his contract if a major-league team offers him a job.
