The Rising Tide: Game 51, Royals at Jays
Kansas City Royals at Toronto Blue Jays, May 24, 2008 1:07 PM EDT
It was great fun to watch a non-nailbiting Jays game yesterday. The Jays got some big hits, and Marco Scutaro, Alexis Rios, Lyle Overbay, and Scott Rolen all had very fine days at the plate. On the other side of the ball, Aaron Hill had a fantastic diving catch and Roy Halladay carved the Royals to pieces, going the distance and allowing only a 1st inning run (on a couple of not particularly well-hit singles up the middle), striking out 5 and walking no one. Doc did not give up an extra base hit (only 4 hits in all) and especially looked strong through the end of the game. Anytime a fella can go 9 innings in 104 pitches, he's doing something very right.
This fine afternoon, the Jays will try to get above .500 for the first time since forever. Matt Stairs is out of the lineup for a 3rd straight game with a stiff neck. This time, Brad Wilkerson will return to right field while Inglett plays left. Jesse Litsch will pitch against #1 draft pick Luke Hochevar, who pitched well against the Jays earlier this season. Let's go Jays!!!!

FOX blackout
although this game is likely to be over by the time the FOX games even start. It’s Alan and Jerry for me.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Not blacked out on mlb.tv
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Extra Innings
doesn’t exactly black them out, it just doesn’t carry any Saturday games that start before 7.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Zaun
called on to start the day game after the night game. That’s a little strange
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
If Litsch
worked on an out pitch against lefties, he might be able to raise his ceiling.

Like a screwball?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That was a hell of a strike-em-out throw-em-out
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
oh that was interesting.....called ball 4 at the plate but the ump at third called swing....runner going into second slowed up and was taged out
boooo
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
totally pointless
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
if you're going to assume that Rios won't drive in that runner
why bat him third?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
strategically it was so dumb
that my only guess is that Pevey is still in the mindset of Stewart being a fast runner
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Or overcompensating for holding all those runners at third
who didn’t end up scoring.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
with no out?
what the hell?

0 for 1
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Tabler is alibiing for Peevy but saying it was a good throw from the cut off man is dumb.....
I could have made that throw
Rolen draws the walk
Overbay with the chance

Overbay with the infield single
another RISP hit with no run.

Wilkerson with the bases loaded

Or do that

What a tease
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
He just bought himself about 6 straight strikeouts

w00t!

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Scoot wasn't in an RBI situation
so a hit wouldn’t have been clutch anymore.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
He really went down and got that one
looked like it was around his shins.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
zoned in on the fastball
fastball count, bases loaded, that’s about as sure as it ever gets that you’re going to see a fastball
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
he's been hitting better lately, though, right?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
did you see Thomas' HR yesterday?
he pretty much crushed it. He’s got 7 now, and Vernon still leads our team with 5
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
of course the way he was hitting until this week
he probably wouldn’t have been better for us than most of what we were putting out there, and now that he’s hitting we’re winning without him.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
true
there’s no way to definitively say that we would be even one game better if we had kept Frank, but it’s not as if we’re smoking the ball now (certainly we weren’t against LAAAAA.)
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
And bear in mind
that a lot of Franks hits have come in games where the A’s would have won handily without him. Like there was that game a few weeks ago where he got 3 hits, but the team scored 13 runs on 16 hits. You think maybe the opponent’s pitching had more to do with that one? We knew Frank could hit it hard if he guessed right.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Cubs fan from the Bay Area here...
looking forward to visiting your fine city in a couple of weeks.
A quick question: Thomas is now hitting .315 /.415/.506 as a member of the A’s—is the consensus up there that the Jays should have tried to work things out instead of cutting him loose?
interesting question
it’s no surprise that Thomas has played well with Oakland, most of his numbers were in line with much better performance than he was showing, and his .159 BABIP screamed regression to the mean. the option for next season made it a slightly riskier move, but I don’t understand why the Jays told Thomas he was “benched” rather than just sitting him a few days and waiting to see if his performance would improve, since it’s not as though they had hitting talent knocking down the door. Having said that, once they did so, and Thomas took his case to the media, the Jays had little choice but to allow him to move on and try to prove them wrong.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Is hard to say what would be happening...Stairs got hot there for a week as DH
But likely would have still been playing….Wilk? would we have signed him? Or Mench? Hard to think we wouldn’t be a game better with someone else leading off the last few weeks?
Probably not Mench
since he was brought in as a lefty-killer and DH platoon mate. If we hadn’t signed Wilk before VW got hurt, we probably would have after.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
nice on Litsch
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Back to back walks
RISP time. 2 for 3 so far
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rolen and Lyle
having good at-bats today
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
2 for 4
and another DP toward our record
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I guess lots of double plays
means lots of Jays on base
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
And lots of futility between then and the end of the inning.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
but I bet over the course of the season
the teams with more double plays score more runs than average. No proof of that, though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
of course, not as many runs
as they would score if they had the same amount of hits and walks but less double plays
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
diaper change time
back in a bit!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Did Doc go 9 last night?
I missed the end of the game
he was really breezing by the end
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I think the furthest he's gone was his 1st start, but not positive.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
So we don't have a hit since the first?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
seems hurt though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Did Overbay take a fastball down the middle on 3-1 for strike 2?
What was he sitting on?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
not sure
he has gotten on base in 10 straight at-bats though, so he seems to know what he’s doing
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
plate appearances that is
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
It's funny... Sportsnet showed Yabuta Yasuhiko as the name of the reliever warming up
which is technically correct, but I don’t expect western TV to use the Japanese name order.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jamie says "right down the pipe"
strike zone says it catches the corner.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gameday says outer third
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I've always been amazed
At how rarely players seem to incur bad injuries as a result of fouling balls off their legs/feet/ankles, especially given the frequency at which it occurs and the relative vulnerability of some of the structures in the area.
it's true
they’re far more likely to hurt their feet or ankles by stepping awkwardly on a base than by fouling a ball off their feet
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
3 for 7
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And then steals second?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
despite staying in front of Buck the whole time
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
73 through 7
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
the Royals are
the only team in the AL who are scoring less than us
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Yeah...am trying to keep that in perspective....we are beating these guys....but really we should be....
Let’s wait for a challenge before we decide we have righted the ship
of course
those teams worse than you are the ones you have to beat. And although they’re still not good, these Royals are much better than the Royals of the past, who’ve given us plenty of problems
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Yeah that's true....but for me it's more....you gotta beat them so if you do it's good...but doesn't mean much....
if you lose it means a bunch more….
Stew walks, Hill infield single
RISP time again for Rios.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Exceptional effort?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hmmmm ok....didn't think it was....but if the SS had stayed stood on second he might have had a out.
If it would have been a shovel pass for a close play
that’s not a routine play.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
doesn't have to be one or the other, right?
it could be ruled a fielder’s choice (even though the runner wasn’t out)
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
but only if it was clear they could've had the batter at first
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Rolen flies to left, no sac fly
3 for 8
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
11 straight reaches
for Lyle
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Bat him leadoff already
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
You could still have it
once Stairs’ neck is fine
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Yeah I agree he's the best choice for lead off.....I'd bet dollars to donuts that Gibby won't do it.....
he did last year some right? Didn't Gibby say something about him not being comfortable there?
course I’d just say ‘get comfortable’
I think
Overbay would be a great #2 hitter. Excellent OBP, some but not a ton of power. If we had a true leadoff guy (what about moving Rios back up when Wells/Stairs are back, he seemed to perform well in that role earlier in the season), I’d like Lyle at 2.
3 for 9
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
at least we got the bases loaded walk
and it’s not like a 6 run lead with 2 innings to go isn’t pretty much a sure win anyways.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hopefully Stairs will feel better by then
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
yet another
quick inning for Litsch
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
He's at 81 through 8
This is going to be one (pink, round) efficient complete game.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zaun's sitting at 6 RBI's this year....can he finish the season with less than 20 and still have a job next year?
Maybe a backup job for us behind Diaz?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he has't been bad at getting on base
if his power picks up a little (currently it is truly pathetic), he should have a job somewhere, though likely as a backup
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
probably not if it were phrased that way
they’d probably tell him he has a chance to win the starting job, then hope that Diaz plays well enough in the spring to win it.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
What about Barajas?
Club option at 2.5mil next year, and his numbers have been decent for a catcher (admittedly mostly against LHP, but still way better than the Zaunbie)
Rios second, Overbay third, Rolen fourth, Stairs fifth, Hill sixth?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
If Inglett can keep this up
and of course against lefties, maybe Scutaro leading off until x is back?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Not counting that RBI triple the other day
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
3 for 11
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
but slugging 6 for 11
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Call it 3 for 12 on a Rios lineout
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
cmon Litsch
be great to see him get a shutout

leadoff double

I thought Inglett had a chance to throw out Gruz there

Bully!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Jamie making a big deal about Guilen tied with the back up catcher for team lead in homers....
Our team leader has been injured for weeks
Stairs has him beat by one
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
oh yeah that's right
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
he has 5 hr
and still no one has passed him

gets the groundout
14th of the afternoon

the streak is over
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Litsch for All-Star rep?
6-1 with ERA 3.55, K/BB4. His IP, K numbers and other peripherals aren’t what some of the other starters’ are, but ASG selectors love wins and losses
He has a shot
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Litsch with the shutout!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
JotD: Litsch and Wilk?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
gotta give at least honourable mention to Lyle
4 times on base in four appearances – just not much WPA because it wasn’t a close game.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
both Litsch and Marcum
basically now have one full season as starters. in both cases, the results have been fantastic.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
If the non-Devil Rays win tonight
we move into 3rd in the East
well everyone
have a great evening.
