I Can Do the Frug: Game Thread, Royals at Jays
Kansas City Royals at Toronto Blue Jays, May 25, 2008 1:07 PM EDT
Well, being over .500 feels pretty darn good. Jesse Litsch was spectacular yesterday and the Jays scored plenty of runs en route to an easy victory. Litsch ptiched a complete game shutout and just did a great job, although his streak of consecutive innings without a walk finally came to an end (but not before passing Jimmy Key (my favourite all-time Jay) for the Jays all-time record. Brad Wilkerson hit a 1st inning grand slam and Lyle Overbay reached 4 times in four trips to the plate (11 straight appearances, a Jays record of his own that's still going
Today, Dustin McGowan pitches against Gil Meche, who hasn't been very good this season after putting together a great season last year. McGowan really needs to get on track with a good start, as he's been fairly shaky recently. Matt Stairs is back in the lineup after missing a few days with a stiff neck, and it's great to welcome him back.
I'm not sure how much of the game I'll get to watch, as I'm taking my daughter for a hike right now. I'll definitely be around for the second half or so, though. Let's go Jays!

but Stew was going on the full count, so it’s RISP time!

for Rios

Peña makes a nice play up the middle
with the flip barely beating Overbay to the bag for the force.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Strikes out Gathright
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
you'd think that
a guy who is athletic enough to jump over a car could figure out a way to get himself on base. but I guess that’s what’s great about baseball
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I assume that's why he was showing bunt
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Pops up Dejesus
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Strikes out German looking
20 straight scoreless innings.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

Did you see the one Erstad made for the walk off double play?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I didn't
was it pretty sweet?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Bases loaded, one out
Lazy fly to left, and Erstad guns down Feliz at the plate in a 1 run game.

the hard way.

Sac fly double play
Run scores, but Stewart throws out Peña at third.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And strikes out German
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I wish we could score even one with the bases loaded and no out
of course we only have 2 hits this game to the Royals’ 8, so it’ll take some work to even get that chance.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wilkerson with the leadoff double
RISP time!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas sneaks a single through the infield

Stew safe at second. RISP time again for Rios
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios strikes out on the 3-2 curve
2 for 6
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And we're all getting pizza
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
1-2-3 for McGowan
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
79 pitches through 6
so he’d have to pitch his brains out over the last 3 to get our third straight complete game, and even then Gibbons wouldn’t be crazy to go to BJ if it was still close.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah no real reason to push McGowan and save the pen
after the two straight complete games, though they do have a getaway game tomorrow and a tough road trip coming up

Gathright ran it down in the shadows
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Gload backed up pretty awkwardly on that Scutaro fly, it looked like
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And Meche is at 115 pitches
so we probably won’t see him in the 7th.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Buck leadoff single
up the middle again.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Hard to go up the middle with a man on first
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wilkerson didn't look
like he was particularly hustling on that
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
lots of grounders that inning
nice job by McGowan
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

so I guess Downs will be in.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas is the only Jay to reach base twice today
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Stew joins that exclusive club
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gibby
shows restraint by not going to the pinch-runner when Big Rod reaches
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
2 for 7 with RISP now
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

the liner up the middle to double the Jays’ lead!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
3 for 8
with the Rios RBI single to CF
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

3 for 9
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gathright bunts it right to Overbay, who applies the tag
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
German smokes one... wait for it...
up the middle
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
a bit of an adventure for Inglett
on the routine fly out. Downs with another effective outing
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Makes you wonder about pulling Stewart...Stewarts a statue out there but can catch the things hit right to him.....
maybe they like Inglett
and are giving him a chance to stick with the team after Wells goes down?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
over Wilkerson, not Stewart, I mean
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
They've both been heating up of late
Obviously hitting a salami helps.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
plus the Jays can keep sending Inglett up and down
once Stew or Wilkerson is gone, they’re gone.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
And a double today
that he ended up scoring the go-ahead

Gordon flies out to Inglett
3 outs away
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
RISP time again after that throwing error

3 for 10
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
3 for 11
Not for want of getting hit hard.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
did Marcum grow up a Royals fan or Cards?
I assume Royals, since I remember him saying he was a KC Chiefs fan
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Born in KC
I think Excelsior Springs is closer to KC.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Beej Time
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
3 for 12
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

MacDonald-esque
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
he was this good two years ago, no?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
BJ locks it down
Jays Win!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
McGowan is obviously JotD
but the hits and RBIs were spread among the offense, so nobody else was over .100.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
We go for the sweep tomorrow
Marcum v. Tomko. Jays of the Day for today: Dustin, with Barajas, Downs, and Ryan meriting honourable mention
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
M's are bringing in Putz for a 6 out save
