Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night - Game Thread - Cubs at Jays
Chicago Cubs at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 13, 2008 7:07 PM EDT
After a terrible series against the last-place Mariners, the Jays hope for some better luck with the first-place Cubs in an interleague series. Alex Rios, Scott Rolen, and Rod Barajas return to the lineup, but Aaron Hill is still out and Gregg Zaun isn't starting today either.
As for the pitchers, A.J. Burnett pitches for the Jays and looks to bounce back, while Sean Gallagher pitches for the Cubs. I'll be watching the little one, watching the game, and working all simultaneously, which should be quite interesting. Let's go Jays!
Today's title comes from the Hold Steady's theme album "Separation Sunday" which I've been listening to a bunch lately. There's something depressing and hilarious about that band.

We can only hope he shares a cab with Lind on the way up tomorrow.

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Any plans for what series to show her next?
I highly recommend Kurau: Phantom Memory.

I was going to ask you actually
thanks for the recommendation!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Depends how science-fictiony her interests run
If near future, Kurau. If far future, Crest of the Stars and its sequel series Banner of the Stars 1 and 2. If fantasy, Scrapped Princess.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I think I'll try Kurau first
I’ve heard good things. she’s definitely more likely to go for near future sci-fi or fantasy, I think.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Have we done it at all?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I actually don't think so

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

seems like a good enough guy, but I’m not buying the Ward-Henke and Marmol-Kerry Wood comparison

AJ strikes out Ramirez

too bad we didn't sign Fukudome
he’d be great atop our lineup.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
How much did he cost?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I want to say around $40 million for four
so not cheap
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
And we went with Stew over Reed for a million and change
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
if we had Fukudome
and no Reed or Eckstein, that’d be not too much of a difference, at least for this season. I don’t think we’d lose too much using Scoot and Mac at SS, certainly less of a difference than having Fukudome in the OF over what we have
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
If we'd known we had this in Scoot
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
that's hindsight though
at the time, I was happy enough about Eckstein and didn’t think we had a huge hole in LF
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
x is making $4M, right?
So assuming it was neither Reed’s $2+M nor Stew’s $1+M, that’s $7-8M, and it blocks Lind for ages, unless we play him at DH.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I think X is $5 mil actually
I agree with you though, but only to the extent we actually use Lind. To the extent we’re blocking him with has-beens who will struggle to OPS .700 in a corner OF spot, we might at least block hiim with someone who can play.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
After the Fukudome single, Soto flies to left for the second out

I thought it might be out, but it didn’t look like Rios was close to where it bounced
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Nope, on the replay it was right above his head
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
AJ
gets DeRo to hold Chicago at the one
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
AJ's 22 pitches put him at 81
So it’ll take a few quick innings to get 6 from him.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Inglett draws the walk
I’m totally logging on to Inglett in left field at this point, once Wilk’s June numbers finish coming back to earth.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he's a nice little bat, isn't he?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

AJ at 101
I’m guessing Gibbons sends him out next inning
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

Looks lik AJ shouldn't have been sent out for this inning

Teen Wolfe in to try to quell the rally
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Walks Soto on the 3-2 pitch

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Pretty much robbed AJ of JotD
lost .130 facing those two batters
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Fukudome unable to score due to the ball hitting the ump
but it’s not looking like our lead is long for this world
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Wolfe's success vs. lefties
and lack vs. righties seems like small sample size. He was the exact opposite last year.

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Now any old double play would do
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
they got it
but one single too late. Still, clinging to the 3-2 lead. Nicely turned by Inglett, actually
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Inglett close to catching that one
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
But Wolfe gets the double play to keep the lead
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Not sure why Gibby was reluctant to go to the bullpen to start the 6th
considering Doc is starting tomorrow
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
and coming off the off-day, no less
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
That inning should have started with Cy or Tallet
probably Cy, but Gibbons would have gone with Tallet
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wolfe actually ends up with .099 despite the run
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Cap'm with the leadoff single

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Piniella coming out himself for a chat
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And then finally makes the call
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
With a 1-1 count on Wilkerson
That’s got to play to the hitter’s favour, you’d think.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

Overcompensating?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
