The Right to Grief - Game 71, Cubs at Jays
Chicago Cubs at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 15, 2008 1:07 PM EDT
A tough game yesterday for our heroic corvids, but perhaps today will be a better day. A David Eckstein made things tough on Doc Halladay, and he surrendered a 3-run home run to old friend Reed Johnson from which the Jays were unable to recover. The Jays offense was completely punchless against the mediocre Jason Marquis.
Today's rubber match should be an interesting one. Another old friend, Theodore Roosevelt Lilly, pitches for Chicago while Jesse Litsch goes for Toronto.
By the way, Yahoo's Big League Stew is looking for advice and comments about the Rogers Centre for an upcoming article Here's an idea of what they're looking for . If you have input, please e-mail 'Duk at kduck22@gmail.com. I think he needs the info today, though. Let's go Jays!

That Mike Wilner keeps saying that the Jays 'should' have an average offense....but what players are above average at their positions?
Career or this year?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Actually, forget career
reasonable expectation for this year, or this year?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Which of the starting 9 would you not trade for the same position member of the starting nine of the Red Sox?
I wouldn't trade Wells for Crisp or Ellsbury
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That's the tough one.....if we think Wells is the player he was last year....I'd rather have Ellsbury....
if you think Wells is the player he was the year before….is no contest….
So far this year, also no contest
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Not exactly a fair question
The Sox aren’t close to average
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Probably wouldn't trade much for Lugo
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Which Sox player isn't paid double what the comparable Jay is paid?
I guess Wells is getting more than the CFs, and Youkilis was a late starter
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Well before the season Longoria wasn't their starting third baseman
so I would have to take Rolen over whoever it was they had. (Somebody Aybar?) Gotta take x over Bartlett. Hill was a better hitter than Iwamura last year.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios probably better than whatever their RF situation was
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Navarro's OPS last year was .642
so I think either of Zaun or Barajas would have been better
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
guess maybe if I have a few hours I'm going to try to figure that question...if we should ahve hoped they be average....right now I only see that Hill and Rios are the two we should have hoped to be better than average....
And Rios wouldn’t be all that much better than average….there are a lot of good RFers out there
Johnny Mac draws a walk
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios draws a walk
Scoot grounds soft to short, only play is at second
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Interesting splits
Team OPS against R/L
Last year: .715/.848
This year: .734/.655
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Only Oakland is worse against lefties
and their lineup is loaded with lefties

Soto breaks up the clean streak for Litsch
but DeRosa hits an easy grounder.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
We have 6 homers against lefties all season
Philly has forty. (Granted, park effects may be a factor.)
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Would that explain Rios's strikeouts?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Would explain his power disappearing....and that it came out of no where when it came....was very sudden that found the power stroke
But it's not like he got bulky
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I would think that part of juicing would be the mental factor....must make you think you can pound the ball
'Strike out average' percent of time he K's by season n.197, .210,.198,.160,223...
so his strike outs this year is up some but not that far up compared to before last year
They always say so
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Talk about a team loss
Right now, nobody on the team has positive WPA
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wells reaches on The Riot's error
hardly makes up for the bases loaded popup
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

no play to double anyone up
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
With the lefty out, Camp is in
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lee singles up the middle
and again Barajas can’t catch the throw, so 2 score.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And Ramirez hits a homer
so is Camp getting DFAed tomorrow after this Benitez-esque meltdown?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And a third straight hit off Camp
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Camp finally gets out of it
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Zaun's up to second on a wild pitch
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

Zaun up to third, but one run makes no difference at this point. 0 for 5
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Rios gets a useless sac fly
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Scutaro manages the Jays' second hit
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Joe Inglett pinch hitting for Rolen
and gets a first pitch double off the lefty
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Marmol is in
I sure hope Vernon is sitting on a slider
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Barajas has dropped below 0 WPA
making Inglett the only active Jay hitter who has added wins.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Marmol with 4 straight fastballs to start Wells 3-1
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

Barajas grounds to short
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Wilk draws the 2 out walk
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And Zaun hits a first pitch homer
So now we’re… no, we’re still down by 4 with 4 outs to go.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And Johnny Mac strikes out swinging
so 4 runs to get with 3 outs, and they’re warming up Kerry Wood.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Fukudome grounds to short on the first pitch
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lee strikes out on 3 pitches

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
