McGowan out for at least 4 weeks...

Right rotator cuff tear...with surgery a possibility. I'm finding JP his usually cagey self, refusing to comment on the severity of the problem.

I think we need to assume he will be gone well into August, and worse-case-scenario till the end of the season. That vastly complicates trading AJ.

Best case scenario: Marcum gets better quickly, we trade AJ, Parrish stays up, and give Purcey a chance to shine.

Worst case scenario: We trade AJ, Marcum stays down, and our rotation is Halladay, Litsch....Parrish? Purcey?.....do we even have another major league ready fifth starter? Should we consider stretching Downs? Something I've thought had some upside.

How crazy would it be if we had to trade AJ for  pitching after all of this.

Yeah if Marcum stays out we are in trouble

I’d guess Tallet would be fourth starter if AJ was traded and the other two have long stays on the DL. A rotation of Doc, Litsch, Parrish, Purcey and Tallet wouldn’t really strike fear in the hearts of our opponents.

I guess if you had a good deal for AJ that would help the team in the future you might as well make it anyway, with McGowan and Marcum out we aren’t going to make a run.

Tallet

I imagine you’re right that he’s going to be stretched. I don’t know – what I think I find the most disheartening is how our pitchers are going down just as the offence is coming to life. But we might as well get something for AJ while we can.

Looking at Triple A

Beyond Purcey we don’t got much…..Mike MacDonald has been moved from the bullpen to the rotation and has a 2.81 ERA this season…has only had 4 starts now. 3 of the 4 were good and he’s gone 5 to 6 innings in all but one of them. Davis Romero,26, throws left handed, has a 4.03 ERA and is 3-7. He isn’t averaging 5 innings a start and has been hit hard of late..
At AA Brent Cecil is doing great but just got moved up from A earlier this season. He’s 22, 3.16 ERA. Averaging about 4 innings a start. Awful young, would like him to see at least another year of minor league ball.

This was always going to be the problem with our rotation

Potential to be the best, but no depth whatsoever. No we’re learning that lesson the hard way.
