Gin and Misery, Game Thread for Game 86 at Seattle
Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners, Jul 2, 2008 10:10 PM EDT
Hugo always has great song titles for the game threads but all I can think of is how the Jays are making me want to drink....so the song title is an old Merle Haggard song.
We have McGowan going up against Washburn, Washburn's been hit hard this year but McGowan's had troubles on the road so we might see some runs.
Over/under for Jay's hits with RISP? I'm optimistic, lets make it 3.

Howdy!
Don’t want you to suffer through a game thread by yourself tonight… not with so much at stake! This is a serious rubber match with all kinds of bragging rights on the line. These two teams have too much history… blood on both sides… not to give this match the gravity and attention it deserves.
I don't think this is happening tonight

I'm thinking back to those ferocious rivalries of yesteryear
remember Paul Molitor battling Edgar Martinez for the prestigious “Edgar Martinez Award” (given to the league’s best DH.) Seems like ‘Gar had an unfair advantage though… what with the award being named after him and all.
Rays up 5-4 at this point!
Woot!
Do Blue Jays fans enjoy watching the Rays pwn Boston… or is it just sad that yet another division rival is taking their turn dominating.
Just want to express apologies over PKS for last night.

Thats why I used it
I fucking hate you Mariners
My Fantasy team hated that Rays hit
They don’t care here either, but so what.

I think it was nice of us to let Sexton hit one out.....I think the idea is you won't release him if we let him have a gopher ball or two
Yes!
Our new manager cleverly inserts Cairo in the #2 hole, because we should make sure our worst hitter gets as many ABs as possible.
That howling you hear in the background is
Werewolves of London… which is Ibanez’s song because the A-ooouuuuu… sounds like Raaauuulllll. Everyone in Seattle hates it at this point.
I'll Always remember him on Letterman
It was after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had limited time left. Dave asked him if his situation gave him any perspective on life and he said (words to the effect of of) “not really, other than just enjoy every sandwich”. I do.

It's more impressive when he's swatting
low pitches out of the park. Then he goes down on one knee to keep his mechanics in line and the sweet spot lined up.
Felix is injured.
Beltre’s doing whatever he can to make watching the Mariners interesting. Check out his homer on Sunday at Petco if you get a chance.
So Yuni two years ago gets that, right?

It may not be LL
but even in Canada, nobody cares about your fantasy team.

We've suspended all the normal rules
you can talk about politics, religion and fantasy baseball now! It’s like a new lease on life! Go wild!
I'm guzzling Jim Beam Rye Whiskey while watching the game,
reading two blogs and surfing for Brazilian Fart Fetish porn.
how does that have anything to do with religion, politics, and fantasy baseball
and is it ok if i dont use shift or other punctuation

So I suspect we'll get a few more from LL once the Rays game is over
Lookout Landing is really just a front for a Tampa Bay Rays fansite.
Fuck Portland.
I fucking hate you Mariners
You understand though..if you are a Portland fan and they left.
You don’t say, “Time to become a Sonic fan.” That’s stupid.
I fucking hate you Mariners
I'm just saying screw basketball until there is a team I can care about.
I fucking hate you Mariners
I was never a Sonics fan
I used to be a big Blazers fan when Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Duckworth and Williams were the starting five. I gave up on them after they signed Scottie Pippen. The new look Blazers might be able to win me back though.
I'm not gonna lie..I'd go out and party tonight if Clay Bennett had bad things happen to him.
I fucking hate you Mariners
Rincewind
the Mariners season is so over that we’re all just hoping to get the #1 draftpick so we can nab Strasburg.
You guys aren't doing this right
Washburn only has two pitches.
Suck pitch #1
and it that doesn’t work
Suck Pitch # 2

I thought lying about talking to Adam Dunn would be the last straw but apparently he has some photos of the team owner
Yeah, that was bizarre
I was surprised we axed Bavasi and not just McClaren. Seems like it’s having a good effect on the club though.
Exact transcript of what Neihaus just said:
Juan Marichal was 42 years old
Jaun was not the oldest.
Jaun Marichal was 25 years old.
Our fearless leader is a mysteriously raging Senators fan
and that’s the sum total of what I know about hockey.
My Jay's problem is we can't beat the good teams and we can't beat the bad teams
and we can’t find anyone else to play against
already been addressed.
also, religion and politics ok.

No way!
It’s hard. I have a master’s degree, a decent professional record, a savings account, no serious health history, no criminal record, and I still don’t score quite well enough. If only I had taken French in highschool instead of Spanish! Curses!
Now if we can only sell some gullible GM
on Washburn’s turnaround…
Lind is one of the reasons JP should be fired....brought him up....he went 0 for 18....signed Wilkerson.....and sent him down
Wilk is awful….Cito insisted Lind come back up….
It's a great image.

Yeah
Jeff Sullivan does a great job writing recaps, doing baseball analysis around the league and getting some other admins to write for him. Two guys do research on pitching stats, another reports on the farm system.
Keep it up rincewind!
I really love this blog – and perhaps its this lively gamethread, or else the sinking feeling I am getting as yet another game goes south, but I’ve de-lurked, and hope to do just that.
thanks...please to De-lurk...we need folks...early in the season we had a good group....
but then the team went to hell
IN that case...
Perhaps think of the blog as a support group…
I was going to say exactly something of that sort!
And as I say that Jimenez continues to kill jays hitters. Sigh.
And consider finding another team to support
as long as the BJ’s don’t satisfy…
we’ve adopted the Rays, but you could have Pat Gillick’s Phillies… or the surprising Cubs with Sweet Lou at the helm?
I generally cheer for whoever is playing the Yankees and whoever is ahead of them in the standings....
You'll find mass agreement on that front
from the Mariners faithful… but we have also started hating the Red Sox.
Don't forget the stinkin Angels!
We have no shortage of hate!
Pads lost, too.

If you believe this team is just a tweak or two from
contending.. then you have to admit that Bavasi is the one who put together your near contender.
I don't think we're anywhere close
It is hard to say goodbye to the last four years, but I think we have to. I’m ready for a wholesale makeover.
No I don't.
This team can be turned around quick because of players he had no hand in signing and a high payroll. Beltre is the only guy he’s responsible for that I’ll give him credit for.

Apparently,
No one likes to pitch to him, he can’t hit, and the japanese mgmnt. just gave him a massively unwarranted extension. Aside from that he’s great. On the other hand Clement tore up AAA and no is kind of persona non grata now instead of the future.

You know
Provided that neither the Sox or the Yanks make the WC, I could really start rooting for Tampa.
I'll cheer for anyone except the Yankees.....but I like the Rays...I think they were extremely smart this off season
their biggest trouble was infield defense and bullpen….so they trade for Barrett and got him cheap and they get half dozen new arms for the pen.
Much better than JP...our problem last year was offense so he signs Stewart who hasn't hit like a major league outfielder in 5 years....
And Eck who again hasn’t been above average in years
I have to admit...
I expected so much more from Eckstein – he’s been a huge disappointment. I had no doubt we were getting Stewart with Stewart
Must be one of those totally subjective things...
Like even though Overbay is doing reasonable…it feels like every time he comes to the plate he hits into a double play. I think its been at least twice int he past month he’s screwed up bases loaded, no out.
Well I'm less happy with overbay...he gets on good with bases empty but with guys on he's awful
IF they put him in the lead off spot I’d be a fan…but he’s in the middle of the order and he’s gotta drive guys home
The first game thread at LL was pretty much a Rays-Sox game thread.
The Rays have given me a lot to be happy about in an otherwise disastrous season.
As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 3, 2008 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions
If by one...you mean an out
And by the team, you mean Seattle…
That's the game, so the unders win....0 hits with RISP.....
JoD would have to be Lind for the 2 run homer.
Thanks all for coming.....was a nice way to watch two bad teams....
