Gin and Misery, Game Thread for Game 86 at Seattle

Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners, Jul 2, 2008 10:10 PM EDT

Hugo always has great song titles for the game threads but all I can think of is how the Jays are making me want to drink....so the song title is an old Merle Haggard song.

We have McGowan going up against Washburn, Washburn's been hit hard this year but McGowan's had troubles on the road so we might see some runs.

Over/under for Jay's hits with RISP? I'm optimistic, lets make it 3.

Howdy!

Don’t want you to suffer through a game thread by yourself tonight… not with so much at stake! This is a serious rubber match with all kinds of bragging rights on the line. These two teams have too much history… blood on both sides… not to give this match the gravity and attention it deserves.

I'm thinking back to those ferocious rivalries of yesteryear

remember Paul Molitor battling Edgar Martinez for the prestigious “Edgar Martinez Award” (given to the league’s best DH.) Seems like ‘Gar had an unfair advantage though… what with the award being named after him and all.

Rays up 5-4 at this point!

Woot!

Do Blue Jays fans enjoy watching the Rays pwn Boston… or is it just sad that yet another division rival is taking their turn dominating.

My Fantasy team hated that Rays hit

They don’t care here either, but so what.

Yes!

Our new manager cleverly inserts Cairo in the #2 hole, because we should make sure our worst hitter gets as many ABs as possible.

That howling you hear in the background is

Werewolves of London… which is Ibanez’s song because the A-ooouuuuu… sounds like Raaauuulllll. Everyone in Seattle hates it at this point.

I'll Always remember him on Letterman

It was after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had limited time left. Dave asked him if his situation gave him any perspective on life and he said (words to the effect of of) “not really, other than just enjoy every sandwich”. I do.

nice catch.

it really is freakin’ hard to judge a line drive hit directly at you.

It's more impressive when he's swatting

low pitches out of the park. Then he goes down on one knee to keep his mechanics in line and the sweet spot lined up.

I was never a Sonics fan

I used to be a big Blazers fan when Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Duckworth and Williams were the starting five. I gave up on them after they signed Scottie Pippen. The new look Blazers might be able to win me back though.

Yeah

Jeff Sullivan does a great job writing recaps, doing baseball analysis around the league and getting some other admins to write for him. Two guys do research on pitching stats, another reports on the farm system.

No I don't.

This team can be turned around quick because of players he had no hand in signing and a high payroll. Beltre is the only guy he’s responsible for that I’ll give him credit for.

Apparently,

No one likes to pitch to him, he can’t hit, and the japanese mgmnt. just gave him a massively unwarranted extension. Aside from that he’s great. On the other hand Clement tore up AAA and no is kind of persona non grata now instead of the future.

by domefan on Jul 3, 2008 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

I'll cheer for anyone except the Yankees.....but I like the Rays...I think they were extremely smart this off season

their biggest trouble was infield defense and bullpen….so they trade for Barrett and got him cheap and they get half dozen new arms for the pen.

by Tom Dakers on Jul 3, 2008 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I have to admit...

I expected so much more from Eckstein – he’s been a huge disappointment. I had no doubt we were getting Stewart with Stewart

by domefan on Jul 3, 2008 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Must be one of those totally subjective things...

Like even though Overbay is doing reasonable…it feels like every time he comes to the plate he hits into a double play. I think its been at least twice int he past month he’s screwed up bases loaded, no out.

by domefan on Jul 3, 2008 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Well I'm less happy with overbay...he gets on good with bases empty but with guys on he's awful

IF they put him in the lead off spot I’d be a fan…but he’s in the middle of the order and he’s gotta drive guys home

by Tom Dakers on Jul 3, 2008 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

The first game thread at LL was pretty much a Rays-Sox game thread.

The Rays have given me a lot to be happy about in an otherwise disastrous season.

But it’s possible to build a solid community around a bad team if you can get a few knowledgeable and funny posters. Keep it up. Check out LL and appropriate the formula.
