Game Thread for Game 106, Rays at Jays

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays, Jul 28, 2008 7:07 PM EDT

Next Game

Rogers Centre

James Shields vs A.J. Burnett

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing in from center field at 10-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 75.

Complete Coverage >

The Jays haven't had a fun time playing the Rays this season; they are 2-7 vs the Rays. If Rays make the playoffs they should send us a nice card or something. Hopefully it turns around tonight.

AJ pitchers against James Shields (9-6, 3.66). Shields is 3-1 this month with a 3.49 ERA and he is 4-0, 2.40 in his career against us. AJ is 3-2 with a 4.68 ERA for July. Once again he may be making his last start for us.

I'd like to see Lind a little higher than 8th in the order, considering Rolen and Barajas haven't been hitting at all this month. Jays have won their last 5 series at home....if they want to get close we need to win this one. A sweep would put them just 5.5 games back from the Rays with 58 games left. A little way back but not insurmountable.

I should get to watch most of the game tonight....Join me in the Game Thread.

Just saw a little sound bite with JP saying today that AJ isn't going anywhere.....

Course that would mean more to me if I didn’t think JP was a liar

While I've been happy the way AJ's been pitching lately

the cynic in me thinks that he is only performing this well because he knows he is in a walk year. I fear that if we resign him for a multi-year deal, he will immediately revert back to being the maddeningly inconsistent AJ of old.

Also, while he may be a very good deal at $11mil, is he really worth $15+, which is what I estimate the total value of the deal could end up being?

the difference

between a 3run lead and a 4run lead is not as great as a 2run to 3run, in my opinion. no idea what the stats say

what would

the wpa of a sac bunt be here?

the numbers say

don’t do it. IIRC, it’s only beneficial to sac bunt as the home team, tied or down 1 in the 7th or later. Though the numbers may be different given that here it would be s squeeze, so the sacrifice would tack on an extra run to our lead.

I wonder how often

back-to-back triples happen. Gotta be significantly less frequent than back-to-back jacks, but I wonder what the frequency is

or

as John Sterling would say BACK TO BACK AND BELLY TO BELLY triples.
