Roberts pops out to start the game.

I’m happy a) to get to watch a game or at least most of a game and b) that Rance Muliniks isn’t the color guy

A's traded Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs!

Pitcher Gallagher, Outfielder Matt Murton, Infielder Eric Patterson and catcher Josh Donaldson going to Oakland…..I thought the A’s would be a buyer.

Even though it's pretty cliche by now

I wouldn’t second guess any move made by Billy Beane.

Not knowing anything about the prospects the A’s got, I’m not really sure that they really gave up all that much. Yes, Harden has shown flashes of ace-type-stuff, but he is oft-injured and has never put together a full season (Only season with >150IP is 2004, when he put up an ERA+ of 114). As I recall of Gaudin when he was a Jays prospect, he was projected to be not much more than a #3 or so starter. Good move for the Cubs, who are willing to gamble a bit to make a run this year, but I bet the A’s thought that they weren’t going to get substantially better waiting for these two guys. They must figure that stocking the farm with what I can only assume are pretty good prospects is a better move.

I think everyone could have been juicing

In all seriousness though, it seems to me that he has returned to his habit of lifting his head and swinging at bad pitches that limited his effectiveness at the beginning of his career. He managed to avoid this for the most part last year, and increased his walk totals and became a more complete hitter. Seems to me like he has reverted to past form, with similar results.

Yeah I agree

He’s been seeing the ball terribly, and just seems to be a little bit a head of the ball. I think I heard someone talking about his feet being a bit off balance.

I have this part of me that doesn’t want to believe the entire Jays team was juicing these past few years.

yeah...I don't want to think so....just seems like Rios power came from no where.....

same with Hill’s…..and Clemen’s ummmm pusher was in toronto when he started

Well, I dont think Rios ever looked comfortable after that freak staph infection

But yeah, last year’s power numbers just kind of came out of the blue

I read an interesting article on Slate a while back

where the author speculated (he provided no evidence, but it sounds at least as plausible as most conspiracy theories) that steroids may have been part of the success of Moneyball. One of the tenets of moneyball is that good hitters become good power hitters, but the opposite is true. Perhaps the widespread use of steroids is what caused players to so predictably become better power hitters as they developed. Whether or not A’s managment was consciously or acutely aware that it was steroids that were causing the effect, if the theory is true then steroids would have been a major contributor to the A’s success as documented in Moneyball. And with Giambi and Tejada as two of the high profile players heavily implicated in steroid scandals, maybe there’s something to it. I am in no way a conspiracy theorist, but I thought it was some interesting speculation.

yeah, they certainly were

and they share our dashed hopes of a presumed dark horse team thats gone nowhere fast

there were a few posts from Seattle guys in the game thread from the day before that, I thought, were in very bad taste...

but I wasn’t in the room at the time….so all I could do was delete and flag them a few days later

the same guys that were over here?

I imagine with a certain fanbase, you get all types and have to start monitoring more. happens on every community site. I used to read through bluejayway once in a blue moon, and the sort of mindless flame wars that could start there were ridiculous

weird

some people do and say the stupidest things when they feel they are anonymous

by domefan on Jul 8, 2008 8:26 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hahahaha

You never think of it when you surf or read, but I’ve run a few websites, and the craziest stuff happens.

But you seem like you’re doing a great job.

Well trying to figure out how to do things and keep it going till Hugo gets back......

I think when he gets back it will be easier on him if there are a couple of people running things

Do either of you guys ever frequent other Jays blogs?

Have you ever tried to rectuit game-threaders from other blogs that don’t host game threads (e.g. battersbox.ca)?

by SuckaMD on Jul 8, 2008 8:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I actually found battersbox before I found BBB

But I stopped going because I wanted a site that did game threads. I learned about this site from a friend who is a regular on Let’s Go Tribe (Indians SB Nation blog). They are crazy over there.

Yeah I looked around abit and some of the threads get like 800 comments....

but some get a lot of pictures and crap and I’m hoping we don’t get that….

good wood by overbay

but not enough…caught at the warning track

by domefan on Jul 8, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah its weird

some of your comments show up right away, and others like the whole set above have a 3-4 minute lag. Thought you had left and weren’t giving the play-by-play.

Sorry.

which means its time for BJ Ryan

Perhaps its just me, but everytime BJ is on the field, I get nervous – his numbers just seem way better than he seems when he actually pitches
