Game Thread for Game 132 Jays at Rays
Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays, Aug 27, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
One again we try to get to 6 games over .500, we've been 5 games over a number of times but have never made it to 6. If we are going to win David Purcey (2-4, 6.55) is going to have to give us a decent start. I like that the Jays have said that Purcey will be part of the rotation for the rest of the season. It is a good thing to show faith in a young player. But, why doesn't Shawn Marcum get the same consideration? Wouldn't it be a good thing to show faith in him as a young pitcher, who, even though he hasn't been as good since he came back from injury he was doing at least as well as Purcey.
Anyway, the Rays are starting Matt Garza (10-7, 3,71), he has had a rough month of August, 1-1 and 4.44 for the month, inspite of a complete game shutout againts the Rangers. He is 2-1 vs. the Jays this season.
Our powerless Jays have finally found the long ball homering in five straight games and 12 of the last 13. Of course, a good part of that has been Vernon. He has 4 homers in our last 3 games and 14 on the season to lead the team despite only playing 76 games.
I see Scott Rolen isn't in the lineup again tonight. I don't know about anyone else but I am tired of seeing Scoot at third though he is batting .310 for August and getting on at a .375 rate.all with no power but better than I thought. I should be around for most of the game tonight, will have to eat at some point but other than that will be here to watch the game so join me in the game thread. The games have been much more fun to watch the last little while.

the Marcum thing
has to be something other than on-field performance. I just hope he and the Jays get it sorted out.

great to see Rocco playing again by the way
although now he will probably homer against us.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
really tired
running on 2 hours of sleep – I was pretty glad when our soccer game was canceled. How about you?

had a gig last night, and stayed pretty late just to wind down after it was over
so didn’t get home until 3:30 and then had to get up early to do the dad thing and then get to work.

haha, our t-shirts say
the name of our band, and then “monogamous sex, drugs, and rock and roll”
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I'm too old for any of that....
well maybe not the sex part…..
I play guitar and bass some, and taking drum lessons now.
yeah
the extent of the “drugs” for me is the occasional beer too many
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I agree
he looks great
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
according to Cito, he will start playing "pretty much" everyday on Friday
but I’m not sure why not today. He has been taking batting practice, I know, so maybe they are easing him into it and seeing if his shoulder holds up during practice?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
inglett
leadoff single down the line
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
And that's a shallow warning track in the corner
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
we're still making
the hard outs
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Just as long as they eventually start dropping in
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Pretty hard hit
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Almost a great inning for Purcey
Could still be, if he strands Peña at first.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
where I grew up

I have to bail in about 2 hours
to catch a train to the Penny Arcade Expo.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Lind the leadoff single up the middle
let’s do something with it this time
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
not what I had in mind
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Up the middle much better with nobody on
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
why do people get on the Jays for bad attendance
when Tampa is in first place and there’s a lot more empty seats at the Trop?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
It is midweek
Probably better attendance on the weekend. Also, their costs are lower, so they don’t need the same attendance to be successful.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I guess
seems to me the fans should be a lot more excited
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Not as bad as the Marlins, though
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Good job working around the leadoff single
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
great job
by Purcey
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
2 out double for Voodoo Joe
Hope Scoot can bring him home
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Scoot's doing a good job gritting it out
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Works the walk
Big spot for Rios
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
pretty dumb
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
great inning by Purcey
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
swinging on 3-0 pitch
does cito chew rios out?
He hit it hard
Aybar went into foul ground to get it.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah he did hit it decent........it was out of the strike zone though.....but he should know. Cito does seem to talk to the guys a lot.....
I’d imagine he’d have an open conversation going….
Barajas homered on a pitch out of the zone yesterday
Pedroia and Beltre homered against us on pitches out of the zone this season.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
What's Rios's BABIP on line drives?
vs. run expectancy with bases loaded and 2 outs if he takes the walk.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I can imagine Cito saying 'what was the plan there?'
At that count he shouldn’t be swinging unless he gets the pitch he wants. That didn’t look like the pitch but maybe was looking for something high.
one would hope
that Rios wouldn’t need a chewing-out to learn from that experience. So I would guess no
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
we really need
to resolve the DH issue for next season
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
If we can't get Manny or Delgado
I assume one of Lind and Snider will do it.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I don't think the Jays are going to carry snider on the opening day roster
even if they don’t get anybody
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
and just like that
we’re losing
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Hopefully that strikeout means Purcey found his focus again
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
i will ask this again
where the hell do the jays find all these great pitchers?
is our scouting amazing ? our coaching?
Maybe the scouts just don't bother looking at hitters
giving them more time to look for pitchers.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hard to say it's one person or not
but I’m a big fan of Arnsberg
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
can't expect the Skanks to win behind Sir Sidney
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Not sure what pitches Barajas was looking for there
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
that was interesting
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
His new bat looks way different
Maybe he went to an ash bat
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Riggins got Barajased
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And the 3-1
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And the 3-2
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Okay, the 3-2 might have been outside
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
They have the straight on angle on the FSN coverage
I think it was borderline
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
well the Sox were winning....Tied now. won would have thought the Yankees-Sox...
Would have Byrd go against Ponson, a

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
44/14 now?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
the Rays are pretty aggresive, so that helps
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
case in point
that pitch was way out and up
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
10 of 15 outs have been Ks
and he’s losing.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Only if we can hit like yesterday
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Or at least not like today
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
only 61 pitches for Purcey thusfar
so he’s got some more work in him
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
On pace for a CG
if we don’t score
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I'm rooting for Minnesota.
their pitching is better
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Or exactly like we did every other time we faced Garza this year?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah but didn't he only give up one run?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
another scoreless inning
for our clawless corvid heroes
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Has the magic touch against Baldelli
Now we need to score!
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I would say "no. there is another"
but I’m not sure there is
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Overbay's been okay lately
and Barajas, only not so much tonight.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

Can’t imagine x would be needed as a defensive replacement
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
come on Mac
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Not showing confidence in x
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
so yeah
maybe we should’ve used Rolen
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

rays beginning to miss longoria and crawford
clinton speaking
and getting bj under podium
nice play ends the inning
now we take the lead
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Or at least tie it up
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
This inning
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Did he just take a 2-0 fastball down the middle again?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
problem is if we knock garza out
they bring in a sick bullpen
I'll take my chances
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
can't really do any better than he is though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
clinton one liner
lead by the power of our example rather than the example of our power
that's well said
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
should he run?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
How is Riggins at throwing out runners?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I would run.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And I mean me
Not just if I was Rios
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
if hes not running here because they dont want to take bat off wells
then rios should be hitting leadoff not thrid
Are they going to pitch Wells carefully and bring in a lefty for Lind?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
they don't have one warming
even though Lyle and Stairs follow Lind
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Time to build on that WPA lead among our hitters
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

i like the word suckage
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

up to Lind
v. Balfour
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
they dont need lefty cuz balfour is basically unhittable
though if any one could hit him, lind can
More walks than hits
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
gets LInd to chase the high stuff
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
id rather have 12k making noise and influencing umps
than 50k sitting on their hands
I'd rather the other...could afford players....if they don't get more people they won't be able to pay these guys when they hit arbitration
i only do the wave
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that was a joke by the way
in case it wasn’t obvious
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
you don't do the wave?
last hockey game I went to, the drunks around us wanted to do the wave, they didn’t get that it was a tie game in the last two minutes. Fans want to see that

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
let's see
if Lyle can get things started by getting on base
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
