Time to Start a New Streak, Game Thread
Toronto Blue Jays at Chicago White Sox, Sep 11, 2008 8:11 PM EDT
We have Shawn Marcum (8-6, 3.42), he pitched 7 shutout innings in his last start and we could use that again tonight. Chicago has Gavin Floyd (15-6, 3.72), he was hit pretty hard in his last start 7 innings and 5 earned against the Angels.
Cito is still talking about starting AJ, Doc and Litsch on short rest this weekend againt the Red Sox, I guess if we win tonight he might try it. After not making an error for so long the Jays have made 3 errors in a game in 2 of the last 3 games. Making up for lost time. And Rios has an 11 game hitting streak going. Would have been good if he could have got one in the 9th inning last night, but he is hitting with power again. Makes me feel better about next year.
I am glad we are facing a right hander tonight, we'll be spared watching Bautista play first, that should come with a PG13 rating. I have a parent teacher meeting but should be back by the 3rd inning, so join me in the game thread. Go Jays.

Overbay saves a run
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Probably would have thrown it into left field
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I wondered if Scoot would be running
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
that was the second bad call at first today to go in the Jays favour
earlier in the game, Swisher was ruled to have been off the bag on a routine throw from Cabrera, but the replay showed that his toe was on (wasn’t particularly close on replay, either).
Jays haven’t capitalized on either gift, however
Are we bunting him over?
I wish that was a stupid question
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
we've heard a lot about these new maple bats this season
which apparently shatter easily and tend to shear off at the handle, resulting in entire barrels going flying.
I was always under the impression that bats had to made of ash. Is allowing maple bats new, or is it just that they have recently become popular?
I think Joe Carter was the first to use a maple bat
before they were technically allowed
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Maybe Marcum does have an attitude problem
and all the other players hate him and that’s why they never score when he pitches.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Now to give him some run support
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And it's Wilk?
Did we not bring up Lydon or Coats or something?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I don't know
I thought Coats was. He started the year with the team, right? Also, he was a trade for cash, so he must have been in their system for a few years.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Voodoo Joe gets the bunt down
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
well glad they pinch ran...snider could't have walked home on that....
it’s going to bite us in the ass later right
Lefty who hasn't had enough time to warm up
Lind and Overbay should be able to manage something here, right?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
thank the ump if we don't score
clearly ball 4 on the 3-1 pitch
Swisher finally gets that call
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Boston's division odds went down more than their wild card odds went up
and we got the difference?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
if you don't know much about baseball
you’ve come to the right place. We’ll teach you everything you need to know, in exchange for pledging your undying allegiance to the Blue Jays, of course.
And if you throw your glove at a batted ball and hit it
it’s an automatic triple for the batter.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
unless the ump deems that it would have gone over the fence
then it’s a homer
I was assuming it would be on the ground
That’s some good aim if you can hit it on the fly.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Probably on a bunt
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Depends who you ask
One site says 2.7, another says 2

Lefty due up

I was at baseball-reference today
and noticed that the sponsorship of Doc’s page has lapsed. I don’t know how much money is flowing through the BBB coffers, but it’s $165 to renew.
yeah
i think it was like $60 last year
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
i wonder
how they price them. it must be some algorithm based on the number of hits?
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
After further investigation
it appears that it just lapsed today. The policy is that upon expiration, the page is priced at $100 more than it was previously purchased for or three times that price, whichever is less. In Doc’s case, they added $100 to the previous $65 price.
The price then reduces by $10 per day until it is purchased or returns to its previous price, where it stays until someone buys it.

Doc's price
will return to a $95 base price in 7 days
hawk harrelson
is so f’ing annoying. makes me glad to have rance
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Against a guy with a .270 OBP
Maybe throw strikes, huh?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Had League up
Maybe if it gets past Thome
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
still waiting
on someone assassinating hawk harrelson
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Fangraphs still has us at 90% favorites
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Its a site that estimates each side's chance of winning
and each player’s contribution to the outcome based on historical data.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
League gets out of it
please just leave him in for the ninth. Don’t make us deal with BJ
too bad fangraphs won't calculate it for us
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
if we get a couple of runs
we can afford to put BJ in
Maybe if we score a few more we won't have to worry...
…oh wait, Wilkerson is leading this inning off.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hardballtimes has him
at -2 Win Shares Above Bench
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Good thing he's spent most of his time on the bench
lately.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
marginally better than shannon stewart
who is also -2 Win Shares Above Bench, but in fewer plate appearances. I guess Wilkerson hurts the team less quickly
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
so if we had played a block of wood in LF for the half of the season instead of Stew and Wilk
we would be a full game better than we are now
you could have ranted
about why a bench is playing LF when Adam Lind is in AAA
does anyone know
the probability of throwing a runner out on a pitchout vs. on a regular pitch?
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Also, what percent of pitchouts come when the runner is trying to steal?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
That pitchout was almost a strike
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Cabrera hit a single on an IBB attempt
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
also, didn't he strike out
on a fake intentional walk once? like the count went to 3-2 and they faked an intentional walk and zinged one straight down the middle that he took?
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
i listened to a radio inteview with him
decently engaging personality, and you can’t really hold it against him, but he was really cocky
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
nothing doing
with the Vernon Wells special
Yes
But once you take someone out of the game, they can’t come back.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
haha, yeah
normally there are only 25 players available, but in September you can expand to 40
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
bj
thinks this team is going to the world series next year so he is trying to reduce his trade value
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
trust me
he’s better than ken harrelson.
interesting move to pinch run for run that’s not the tying run?
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Avoid the double play?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
with AJ there
you’ll avoid the DP because he can just punch the second baseman.
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Pretty sure he'd get called for interference
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
just like last week?
depends on the umpire . . .
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
is anyone else baffled by this move?
i understand it was HBP, but it didn’t look like he was hurt
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Can we get a double play ball one time?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
he has been calling a really low strike zone, right?
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
only in the last few innings, really
at the beginning he seemed to be calling a good zone
he's got a mincemeat pie waiting for him at home
doesn’t want it to get cold
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
"Tried to go downstairs"
Looked more like he missed.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
good thing they pinch-ran
runner got to third
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" --Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
And Uribe is such a terrible hitter
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
And... exhale
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
hahah serious...

question
doesn’t the rotation dictate that AJ, doc and litsch would pitch anyways, since its a 4 game set? those 3 plus purcey… what other option is there? spot start for richmond or something?
