Well you know I went to Baltimore / So confident and wise / And as I breathed she breathed no more / And she did surely die : Game Thread, Jays at O's
Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles, Sep 26, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Tonight's post title comes from "Baltimore," a great song of the best-titled (though not my favourite) Lyle Lovett record, Joshua Judges Ruth. The Jays head in to Baltimore to end their series, and J.P. Ricciardi must be feeling pretty confident and wise after the Jays gave him another year to make the playoffs, despite the fact that the team looks to end this season in 4th place and with a record not significantly better than they've done in the past two seasons. Please do let us know what you think about J.P. being back for another year in the comments and poll for the post below, and stop by and chat about that, as well as the game and anything else on your mind, tonight in the game thread.

I've seen Lyle Lovette in concert a couple of times in the past year or so...
He’s great.

most fun I've had at a concert was watching him, Joe Ely, John Hiatt and Guy Clark doing their songwriter tour

that is a great show

Joe Ely is a favorite of mine....
well all of them really but I saw Joe Ely at the Calgary Folk Fest several years back and he just blew me away. Then saw John Hiatt at the Edmonton Folk Fest a couple of years later and he amazed me with how much sound he could get out of his guitar

he is a great guitar player, I agree

I was invited to a guitar contest that he was to judge a few years back.....
but I chickened out….I’m not really that type of guitar player, but was kind of mad at myself that might have been able to talk to him for a bit, but was phoned two days before and I’m never going to impress people as a guitar god

that is really cool
you must shred compared to me, I’m not a flashy player at all, more of a Pete Townsend guitar player-songwriter type

I just made a fairly long-winded post
relating to the poll you posted. I reluctantly concluded that I thought the one-year extension was justified, though would not have approved of anything more than that.

I thought he was already under contract
and they just decided not to fire him

oops, sorry
but if they put off firing him for an additional year, it’s basically the same as an extension

I don't really listen to the show
other than occasionally, but I do think it’s cool that J.P. does it. If the callers in were better (say, Bluebird Banter readers), the show would be great, I think.

yeah
I don’t expect him to admit to his mistakes when some idiot calls in to bash him for letting Reed Johnson go (full disclosure – as you know, I savaged that move on the site) – but it would impress people if he admitted to having learned from his experience when talking to the press

I think Purcey's number 4 in this little exersize
by Tom Dakers on Sep 26, 2008 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
good question
ideally, I would have Litsch as 4 and Purcey starting in AAA and working on strike-throwing and being the first callup

Litsch has been good enough this season to pencil in as number 3, certainly
and based on his peripherals, there’s a good chance his success will continue, but if he does decline in performance, he’d still be a decent 4.

by hugo on Sep 26, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if he doesn't decline
Litsch will certainly put up number-3 type stats. But I still think the Jays need to at least look for two starters if AJ leaves. Don’t force anything if there aren’t decent players/contracts to be had, but I dont know how much I like a Doc-Litsch-Richmond-Purcey-someone rotation
by SuckaMD on Sep 26, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that may be better for Purcey's long term development
but if the goal is to compete next year, I think Purcey has shown more major league readiness thus far. It would obviously depend on what they both show in spring training, but I think Purcey is a bit better at this point
by SuckaMD on Sep 26, 2008 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Purcey is like 27 right? I think if he goes down again that might be the end.....
lots of guys close to passing him
by Tom Dakers on Sep 26, 2008 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Richmond's numbers are better, I think
not counting today, 17/2 K/BB in 21 innings isn’t bad (though his whip is a little high) Purcey’s whip and K numbers are similar, and he’s had more great starts, but he has also walked more and gotten shelled more. Richmond hasn’t had a bad start yet, that’s not bad in 5 efforts for a rookie, is it?

hmmm that is fascinating
last season, Cleveland was way down on him and was desperate for a SS, not thinking that Peralta could do the job anymore, and relief arms (with Borowski as their closer), and I definitely think we could’ve made it happen. I was all over it, but JP didn’t make an offer, as far as I know

I think it would be really funny
if some GM organized a few days over the course of a season for fans to call or Email in moves that they think the team should make. Most of them would obviously be ridiculously suggestions in the “I think we should trade our backup catcher for Albert Pujols” vein, but with proper screening of submissions, I think that it could actually help the team make some decent transactions.
Of course, few if any GM’s would be willing to submit to this, as it means admitting that they may not have as much super-valuable talent and insider knowledge as they would like to think.
by SuckaMD on Sep 26, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

I sort of knew I wouldn’t get on, since no one in Toronto had likely ever heard of Shin-Soo Choo. I thought maybe calling from DC I would have a chance, but that certainly did not help

maybe its because of their insistence on bunting with Bautista in the first inning
I would really like to see Overbay higher in the order, even leadoff. Takes advantage of his good OBP and current power outage, plus it takes away a few GIDP chances
by SuckaMD on Sep 26, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
though I know he has struggled in the 2-hole before, I think it should be tried again. it’s just funny we will put Bautista there, when he isn’t really any faster and a ton worse at getting on base, but not the everyday first baseman, our team’s best on-base guy (and it’s not particularly close)

he pitched well
but aside from tonight he game up three runs in each start in fewer than 6 innings each time. He is a rookie, and really came out of nowhere, so he has nowhere to go but up, but I’d want to see quite a bit of improvement in spring training before putting him in the rotation to begin the next season, particularly if the offense doesn’t get much of an upgrade in the offseason
by SuckaMD on Sep 26, 2008 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I generally agree with that
his start against the Sox was pretty impressive too, though. he gave up a 2-run HR to Ortiz, but it was on a well-placed 3-2 changeup. and the BAA is greater than you’d expect in front of our defense. If it doesn’t work out in the rotation, which is certainly not unlikely, he could still be a good late-inning righty, with a quality fastball and a nice tight slider. Purcey would still be a better bet for long-term success, but Richmond has acquitted himself well.

by the BAA comment I meant
it’s a decent possibility he’s been somewhat hit unlucky in a small sample size and his K/BB ratio over the number of innings does suggest he’s got some potential as well as more than a spot starter
