Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Michael Young

Si is reporting that Young wants a trade from the Rangers, because of his desire to play SS. He has been an allstar at that position for 5 strait years, and last year won his first Gold Glove there. The Rangers are asking him to make that move in order to make a space for Elvis Andrus, a SS acquired in the Texiera deal.

I feel like this might really give the Jays a great chance to bolster there team.

Young is in midst of a 5 year 80 mil deal. 16 million annually through 2013.

He is 32 now, so he is the prime of his Career.

Michael Young used to be in the Blue Jay organization, and I think him and Vernon Wells are best buds. He is the kind of Character we want on the team and would fit in right away.

Now obviously that is a lot of money and Texas isn't going to give him up cheap.

They do want a third Baseman, so hopefully they might take Rolen off our hands. That would help sure up our money situation.

We would then need to throw in a slew of prospects, which I am sure we could give up.

It would be awesome to see how his game effects the rest of the blue Jays. Seems like we have been after an elite SS for so long, this might be an opportunity to get one.

Peace

For 16 million a year we could add a huge bat to DH

It would add more wins than Young and wouldn’t cost us any prospects.

And why do we want anyone to take Rolen off our hands?

We have no depth at third.

Actually

if we were willing to take on Young’s whole salary, I doubt we would have to give up much of anything. The Rangers want to trade him because he is making way too much money and blocking their cheaper and possibly better middle infield prospects. He can’t switch back to second base as long as Ian Kinsler is entrenched there.

Young’s contract would not be a good one to take on. He is probably still good for about a mid 700s OPS and slightly below average defense, which is worth something, but the Jays would be getting Young for his decline phase and would be unloading Rolen, who is only signed for 2 more years, for Young, who is signed for 2013. And who would play third base? Inglett? I can’t see how this makes the team better.

If the Jays have to give up some of their prospects to acquire a top of the line player, I can live with that but to give up the farm system they have worked so hard to build up for a marginally-above average player like Young would be a big mistake. Also, you should consider that the Rangers have one of the best farm systems in the league so they won’t necessarily be after prospects.

I happen to like Young but this move would be a disaster for the Jays. He looks to be in decline and while he could bounce back from his lousy season last year, that would be offset by him moving away from the Ballpark, a hitters’ paradise. He has barely been an above average hitter away from Arlington throughout his career.

If you go over to the Ranger site

They are thrilled with the idea that he might be traded. No talk about what they might get, they are just happy he’ll be gone.

And when he won the Gold Glove they were worried because they thought that it would be harder to move him to another position if he thought he was good defensively at short. He is not a good defensive shortstop and any team taking him will be wanting to move him off short before the end of his contract.

true

he’s not a good defensive SS. But in fairness to Young, some folks seem to think that he is worse at SS than he actually is. If you look at UZR and some other stats, what it looks like to me is that Young had some awful defensive years when he first took over the shortstop job. He wasn’t expecting to move to SS and obviously took some time getting used to playing the position at the major-league level. But after the two terrible years, his fielding has been adequate, though slightly below average and certainly nothing special, but adequate enough to make him a reasonably valuable SS. So his overall defensive numbers (and fans’ perceptions) are skewed by those two awful seasons. The main reason he is such a problem now is that he’s being paid like an elite player when in actuality he is nowhere close to one. And of course it remains to be seen whether his defense will remain at its current level through his decline phase – clearly, the Rangers do not think it will.

Texas never should have signed him to that 5 year, $80 million dollar deal, and no one should consider taking on contract. Even if Texas ate half the money on the deal and it cost the Jays nothing of significance in return, I think I would stay away. This season might well be the only one where you would get a return on the investment.

Well theres a reason to our happieness

He’s an aging SS who is making 16 million a year for the next 5 years. He has shown a drastic loss of range in the past few years and his range is only going to get worse. Plus, if he his continuously adamant in his demands to play SS, he will soon be blocking one of our top prospects in Elvis Andrus. Also, in the final year of his deal, he will be 37 years old. So, in effect, you are paying a guy who will be between 32-37 years old $16 million a year.
If he were to move to 3b, he could still be serviceable, as his lack of range wouldnt be shown that much and his bat is still solid. However, the mere thought of getting rid of his contract is great to us Rangers fans, although Young is a clear fan favorite.
