Starting Rotation Question

Right now, we have Halladay, Janssen, Litsch, and Purcey in our rotation, by the soudns of things. Let's say that it stays that way through Spring Training and on to Opening Day. We're one starter short. Out of the following three, who do you pick to fill the last spot in the Jays Starting Rotation, and why?

  • Matt Clement
  • Mike Maroth
  • Scott Richmond

Feel free to give predictions for each pitcher, as well. I'll post my pick/predictions later on.

what about Ricky Ro?

I see him as having a better chance than Maroth, at least, out of those three. And if JP is to believed, Cecil is on equal footing in competition with them as well.

random question

Do you guys think that Russ Adams will ever play for the Jays? Whatever happened to him, and why didn’t he perform as expected?

Adams

is still plugging away in AAA. He had a bad year this year at the plate, hitting .258/.341/.417 (though he did hit 15 HRs, a career high) and playing mostly the outfield. Adams didn’t hit as well in the majors as he needed to or the Jays thought he would — his on-base skills just didn’t translate to the majors. Worse, his fielding was really bad, first at SS, and then at other infield positions at which they tried him. He didn’t have the arm for short or third and wasn’t good at second base either, so the Jays tried to remake him as a utility player. The problem was that he has had two full years at AAA in that role and he hasn’t hit at all. Now the Jays’ outfield and bench picutre is much more crowded (particularly from the left-handed side) and it is hard to imagine Adams making his way back to the Jays. A change of scenery might help.

If it was that easy to figure out why a prospect didn't catch on

nobody would draft prospects who weren’t going to catch on.

yeah

I wonder if GMs and scouts have gotten better at drafting with more data and experience — I remember seeing that 1/2 the first round picks between 1965 (the first year of the draft) and 1995 played in the majors for three seasons or more. It probably wouldn’t be statistically significant to go too much further, but I wonder if that number is trending up – I would think it would be but you never know.

by the way

interestingly, it was about 30% for second-round picks and 25% for third-rounders. I guess we can feel a little better about one of our Burnett picks.

I predict

Matt Clement will come out of ST with the 5th starter job…he may not be healthy enough to hold if for too long but I think ouf of the 3 mentioned he’ll win the job

On the one hand, I see Richmond earning the job

on the other hand, I can imagine that one of the other two might have a clause where they can walk away if they don’t make the team out of ST, and if that’s the case and it’s close, I can see them keeping the veteran for the start of the season. That said, I also think Cecil has a chance.

yeah

if JP is to believed and it is a truly open competition, Cecil seems like the most talented. But I think Ricciardi is shading a little and the Jays would prefer someone else to claim the 5th starter job. My guess is that the Jays go with Clement if he is healthy; if not, Romero. I see Richmond as more of a solid contingency plan throughout the season and Maroth as just there in the event of a total water landing. I think Cecil, Romero x 2, and Bullington will get starts before Maroth.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’ll be surprised if Maroth makes the AAA rotation.

As for the Jays’ #5, I said before that all things being equal Cecil is the best pitcher but it occurred to me that things CAN’T be equal because if it’s Cecil they have to put him on the 40 man roster and start his clock. Given that the #5 will go back down after McGowan returns (in all likelyhood) I don’t see them doing that with Cecil for 6 or 7 starts.

Therefore my choice goes back to Richmond. If Clement is 100% he’ll get it but I’m not going to believe he’s 100% until i see it.

I’ll go with Richmond given the special circumstances.

The arbitration clock only counts major league service time

Being on the 40 man roster affects option years, but if we’re expecting him to be full time in 2010 then the option year isn’t a big deal.

right

the Jays would have to drop someone off the 40-man roster to make room, but that’s not really a big deal. As for starting Cecil’s clock, if he made the rotation right out of camp, he might get to arbitration eligibility (as a super two) faster so it could have minor financial implications.

But not until after 2010
