Beyond a Stretch of Maryland Pines There's a River Without a Name: 10/2 Game Thread, Jays at Orioles

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles, Oct 2, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

The Jays kick off their final season series tonight in the Land of Pleasant Living.  David Purcey looks to follow up a reasonably strong start for the Jays, while Jason Berken, who pitched well against the Jays his last time out, pitches for the black and orange icterids.

Kyle Phillips gets the start behind the plate tonight, while that Kevin Millar-shaped guy at the hot corner is, well, Kevin Millar.  Since my trip to Minneapolis this week (great town, by the way), I've been rooting for the Twins to catch up to the Tigers, so I'll be flipping between this game and that one.

Today's title comes from an obscure Bruce Springsteen b-side called Shut Out the Light.

Did you hear Riccardi on the fan today when asked about his biggenst

dissapointment of the season he said the fans reaction to the season

by ClintB on Oct 2, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I find that really funny

considering the absolutely wretched job that the team did promoting this season to the fans. the offseason, even when they were in first place, it was basically nothing.

we finished the season 10-1

with a bunch of rainouts. the tournament is pretty cool actually, the Assistant Attorney General throws out the first pitch

last season

we got destroyed in the tournament by a bunch of former minor league players masquerading as a component of the Justice Department. They didn’t even know what the branch they were supposed to be playing for did.

the Justice Dept. cheated at softball? that is a little disoncerting

by aagoodfella on Oct 2, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

though we are Justice as well and we play fair.

I really want to beat that team this year.

interesting comment from elliot in the sun:

He speculates that if JP makes the annual end-of-the-year, state-of-the-franchise address booked for Monday at 11 a.m. then he’s likely in for next year

you have to like the Doc reaction to the clubhouse situation

Halladay on clubhouse situation: “Any concerns I have will be addressed to the right people.”

in ten years, when he can't play anymore

he can sign with the jays and have millar’s designated good guy job

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Was that off the rail off the second section?

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Oct 2, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Nope, back of a seat 3/4 back in the front section

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

$75MM 2010 lineup:

Scutaro
Overbay
Hill
Lind
Wells
Snider
Ruiz
Encarnacion
Barajas

by Andy Mc on Oct 2, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

my only question about Ruiz

is how he does with RiSP — as the data shows (avg / obp / slg / ops) Ruiz seems to do much better with bases empty

Bases Empty .361 .418 .787 1.205
 Runners On .209 .300 .349 .649
 RISP .200 .346 .250 .596
 RISP w/2 Outs .250 .455 .375 .830
 Bases Loaded .333 .400 .667 1.067

AB count by class above (61, 43, 20, 8, 3) — so small sample size for sure but not extremely

by aagoodfella on Oct 2, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

61 at bats is an extremely small sample....

equivalent of 12 games? have you seen a player have a 12 game hot or cold streak?

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

its enough to make a valid statistical inference

by aagoodfella on Oct 2, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

but i agree it will normalize over time

by aagoodfella on Oct 2, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

still it is a teeny bit worrisome

by aagoodfella on Oct 2, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

nope...not close...

RISP 20 at bats….200 is 4 hits…if he got 2 more bloop singles he would be .300…if the difference between .200 and .300 is 2 bloop singles it’s an extreme small sample.

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL, now I have u defending Ruiz … ;-)

by aagoodfella on Oct 2, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

oh isn't about defending...the 100 At bats total is a small sample...

breaking it down to smaller bits is of no value…every player in baseball will have runs of 100 good and bat at bats. People get on Rios for 100 bat at bats with the White Sox but this year’s MVP Mauer had a run of 100 bad at bats.

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Were Mauer's worst 100 at-bats as bad as Rios's best 100 at-bats?

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Oct 2, 2009 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess Barajas would be a good example...

if you judged him on his best 100 at bat run, he’s an all star and the worst stretch he’s horrible…need a long stretch to judge a player. guessing Ruiz is bad with RISP off 20 at bats is like sending Adam Lind down to the minors after 17 bad at bats.

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Ruiz 10 HR 106 AB = full season 60 HR's.

I know. I know, it’s probably not reasonable. But when does it become reasonable. Was it any more reasonable to assume that Hill would hit 35+.

Heck, maybe he is the solution at DH. Hard to argue with performance, so far.

by REMO on Oct 2, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

Lind to 1B

Find a good offensive and defensive outfielder like Mike Cameron

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Oct 2, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm assuming he'll play CF

And a good defensive LF will save you about a win more than a good defensive 1B

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Oct 2, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd love Cameron....

get a great defensive CF with pop and remake us as a defensive team again

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

well....when a guy has been playing 12 years in the minors and hasn't got 30 homers there...

you tend to trust the long term more than 100 hot at bats….he looks good but he isn’t going to hit 60 homers. Or anything like that

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Nobody hits 60 HR's these days (possible exception of Pujols)

But 30-35? Why not? He’d only need to hit 20-25 more in 500+ AB. We’ve been over the fact many times that he’s been very good, power and average-wise, everywhere he’s been.

by REMO on Oct 2, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

20 to 25 more is easier said than done...easy to have a hot streak

hard to have a season. He will be 32 next year…he isn’t going to suddenly become a 35 home run guy at that age. I’d like him to get a shot but have to be reasonable about what to expect.

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah cito keeps saying that 'I manage like I would have like to be managed'

but then he doesn’t because he forgets that not everyone is an everyday player, which is what he wanted to be. He talks to some guys, doesn’t talk to others and then is surprised when the others complain

by Tom Dakers on Oct 2, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Sadly I doubt it could rain so much before we make an out

that they’d call the game

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
