What could have been...
From MLBtraderumors.com:
ESPN's Keith Law, former special assistant to the GM in Toronto, mentioned a few interesting Blue Jays' non-trades in his chat today. He says that the Mets once offered 19-year-old David Wright for Jose Cruz Jr., but J.P. Ricciardi said "I'm not trading a major league player for some guy in the (Low Class-A) Sally League." Klaw also mentions that the Jays had a chance to trade Cruz Jr. for Rafael Soriano, but wouldn't do it unless the Mariners kicked in Clint Nageotte as well. What could have been, Jays fans.
WOWZA...David Wright for Jose Cruz?!?!?!?!?!?!? Guess that kind of shows what kind of an eye for talent JP had! Good Riddance!

Well...
If hindsight is 20/20 but I doubt you would have found anyone that would have traded a major league player for someone low A unless it was a total salary dump. If you are going to get on him for that, why not get on him for that you are really searching for reasons to rag on him.

indeed
If you’re going to mention deals like Cruz Jr for Wright, to be fair you’ve also got to talk about what are doubtlessly dozens of other deal proposals that would have had zero or negative impact.

Well
Why wouldn’t you at least consider a trade of a major leaguer for a guy in Low-A if that guy has a lot of tools/talent? It must have been during the 2002 season as Wright was drafted in ‘01 so couldn’t be traded til ‘02 and after the ’02 season Cruz left Toronto as a FA…So the Jays got nothing for him anyways….Just seems like JP didn’t have the vision or ability to asses talent that some others might.

If Wright was offered to the Jays...he was offered to other teams,
Can you guess which low A guys are going to turn to David Wright? Is a crap shoot. If you want to rag on JP, there are 100’s of good reasons, saying that he didn’t trade for a low A player is a stretch. There likely was some sort of compensation for losing Cruz as a free agent obviously we didn’t get someone like David Wright. I’m sure no one was jumping up and down at the time that we didn’t trade for Wright, waiting until later seems petty. Law never said ‘I argued hard for that trade’. If you want to do hindsight, there isn’t a decent GM in baseball.
