Jays Claim Sean Henn

According to Jordan Bastian on twitter, the Jays have claimed Sean Henn of waivers from the Orioles. Sean's numbers last year:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Sean Henn 0-0 6 0 0 0 0 1 3.0 6 3 3 0 4 6 9.00 3.33

Sean is 28 and was drafted by the Yankees in 2000 in the 26th round. He hasn't done much in the major leagues, you can check him out on his Baseball Reference page.

The Jays designated Michael Barrett for assignment to make room on the 40 man for Henn, likely ending his time with the team. His season with the Jays didn't go well, he was hurt April 17th and never made it back to the team as Cito liked Raul Chavez in the back up catcher spot.

Not exactly a big move.

Joe Frisaro in his MLB blog figures the Marlins what to trade Jeremy Hermida and list the Jays as a possible destination. Hermida plays RF, a position that could use an upgrade. He will only be 26 next year.

How about looking at his career numbers, which boil down to about a full season for a reliever and are just as bad.

yeah is just one of those off season moves...

lat year we made a bunch around this time, it means nothing. Just a depth lefty.

Meh

Best guess is someone in the organization saw something they liked in his arm and think they can work with him. There are more than enough examples of pitchers with awful MLB records until whatever clicked. Based on the little video I’ve found, he’s a lefty that throws a two-seam fastball around 95mph, and what looks like a curveball and a slider-slurve. He also had a decent enough year down in AAA.

Depth signing, potential upside, negliable cost; find a way to keep him in the bottom half of the strike zone and get his curveball down, you might have a nice cheap option in him. If he continues to suck, he’s gone by the end of Spring Training.

Hermida is an interesting case, maybe a platoon in right with him and Bautista, not

sure what the Marlins would want in return, he’s been hurt alot and hasn’t put up great numbers, you’re trading for potential here

Depending...

on what FLA wants for him (which I imagine can’t be much) Hermida could be a good low risk – high reward type. He’s always had the potential and is still pretty young…plus RF is a spot the Jays could use a little help…

He seems like hes a guy they talk about every year that could break out

and never does… but its worth a shot i guess if we can get him for cheap.

I am assuming if the Jays pick up Hermida, it would imply release of Bautista — yes or no, Tom?

Bautista and Hermida do not seem to be huge different Hermida avg .259, obp .348 and slg .392 while Bautista .235 / .349 /.408 — Hermida seems to offer a bit more avg for a teeny bit less power and they make about the same money. I guess if Hermida has better “potential”.

I really cannot see why Jays would give up much or anything for Hermida when they already have Bautista unless he is exceptional good defensively. It just seems like roster clutter.

I don't think it would mean they would release Bautista

but Hermida is 26 and Bautista is 29. Hermida’s a first round draft choice. And course the batting lines you put up were just last year which was a good season for Jose and a bad season for Hermida. Hermida has hit better on the road than at home his whole career so moving away might be helpful.

He’s not a start but he’d be an upgrade.

You also have to consider that Bautista has a great arm

I dont know anything about Hermida defensively, but i doubt hes going to be as good as Jose out there.

Bautista has a great arm

but a guy that goes 4 months of the season not hitting at all isn’t my first choice for a corner outfield spot.
