2009 AL Gold Glove Winners

This year's AL Gold Gloves winners were named today. No Jays won.

C: Joe Mauer, Twins

1B: Mark Teixeira, Yankees

2B: Placido Polanco, Tigers

3B: Evan Longoria, Rays

SS: Derek Jeter, Yankees

OF: Torii Hunter, Angels

OF: Adam Jones, Orioles

OF: Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners

P: Mark Buehrle, White Sox

I know, should get all up in arms that Aaron Hill didn't win or that Derek Jeter (you gotta be kidding) did, but I quit caring about who the Gold Glove winners were when Rafael Palmeiro won in 1999 even though he only played 28 games at first that year. I figure once you do that, you've admitted the award is just a joke.

Anyway, what do you think about the choices?

Its obvious its just a popularity contest. Derek Jeter? The same Derek Jeter Yankee fans want moved to right field or DH? And Joe Mauer? He’s an unbelievable talent, but is he the best “catcher” in the AL? This isn’t the silver slugger, which he should be a slam dunk,

Sheesh.

I always thought it was funny when the NL Gold Glove winners were announced…they always just gave the Pitchers award to Greg Maddux regardless of what he did. They should just rename the Pitchers Gold Glove award “The Maddux”

Scutaro has a legit beef

although Jeter has improved his defence this year, specifically when moving to his left. Hill’s defence is largely overrated by Jays fans.

Wait...

The Gold Glove is awarded for DEFENSE!? Would not have known by looking at some of the choices in recent years (or, as Tom pointed out, Palmeiro). Who cares about Hill’s defense – he was a great hitter, sounds like Gold Glove candidate to me…

really?

This award is clearly a joke. Jeter got his for a lifetime achievement award. Polanco based on what he used to be able to do. Longoria i think got it strictly for name recognition. Agree with Yogowen above about Scoot. I’d be a little unhappy is I was him…

stats show this award's a joke

They should stop asking the managers to vote on this, and give it to the position player who’s got the best zone rating for 100+ games at a given position. Poof, instantly, Jeter, Hunter, and others I’m sure don’t get the award.

An even better side effect here would be that people actually start paying attention to defense stats and are better able to assess defensive excellence by something other than vague impressions or reputations.
