Jays considering Doc extension window

According to Sportsnet, the Blue Jays are considering allowing a team negotiating a trade for Doc to negotiate an extension window.

The Toronto Blue Jays may be prepared to allow another team to negotiate a contract extension with ace Roy Halladay should a trade opportunity be made available.

MLB.com reported Tuesday that the reasoning behind a window is the fact that the Blue Jays would likely receive a better package for Halladay if a contract extension could be signed.

Former GM J.P. Ricciardi refused previously to allow the opportunity for a team to negotiate an extension, but things have changed since his replacement Alex Anthopoulos took over in September.

Makes perfect sense.  Might as well see as many suitors as you can and get the most back you possibly could.  No chance that Roy would be resigning with Toronto anyways, so you might as well see if you can get more by allowing the negotiating window.

JP didn’t allow a window because the team would get a year and a half of Halladay instead of just a year or a rental half a year.

Yes things have changed since AA took over, but the situation is now different as well…

That’s a good point (also, with the trade deadline, it is more difficult to squeeze in that negotiating when the season is going on…quite impractical.

The situation has changed for sure. And I wasn’t knocking JP.

this was reported in August, too

so apparently, even JP was intending on allowing a negotiating period in the offseason.

Ah sorry, I knew you weren’t I mean the quote that you used. The person makes it sound like JP was not going to let any talk to Halladay at all period, but there were reasons for it.

i think this would be obvious

any team that can lock up Roy for a long time would be willing to part with much more in playing assets than controlling Roy for only a year

obviously signing Roy for, say five years, is INCREDIBLY valuable to any team … if I owned a team, I would be happy to part with multiple prospects and/or existing roster players and/or draft choices to get Roy locked in for multi-years

of course, I would still like to be that team which extends Roy for another five years, but if Roy is set on another platform to achieve his WS ambitions (and he has certainly earned the right to make that choice) than his wishes should be respected

i think it's a minor thing.

most teams would have a sense what it would take to lock him up. he’s waived a no-trade to join them. so it shouldn’t be a problem for said acquiring team to extend doc after acquiring him.
