Jays Claim Jarrett Hoffpauir
Here is the press release:
BLUE JAYS CLAIM HOFFPAUIR FROM CARDINALS
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have claimed 2B JARRETT HOFFPAUIR (hoff-power) on waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. To make room on the 40-man roster, LHP BILL MURPHY has been designated for assignment.
HOFFPAUIR, 26, split the 2009 season between St. Louis and Memphis of the Pacific Coast League. In eight games with the Cardinals, the 5-9, 190 lb. infielder hit .250 (3-12) with two doubles and two RBI. The Natchez, Mississippi native was the Cardinals 6th round selection in 2004 First Year Player Draft. In 108 games with Memphis last season he batted .291 with 22 doubles, 14 home runs and drove in 53 runs.
Tom again, not a big deal move, just one of the many minor moves that happen in the off season. Jarrett has had a some good seasons in the minors and would give us some depth in the infield.

much needed, although probably not meaningful depth
any news on Scutaro? I have been scanning the Internet and found nothing

Likely won't be hearing too much about him for a couple of weeks.
AA is still getting things together to talk to the higher ups about budget.

Excellent BB/K ratio
Why not. If he can play a bit of 3B as well if necessary, all the better. If not, still not a bad move. Good depth at AAA if nothing else.

This looks like Scutaro insurance; a bit of power, a bit of speed, can play most the infield and has a good career OBP. Looks like a decent utility option.

update on J-Mac, Scutaro and Barajas
“As much as I like John McDonald, Rod Barajas and Marco Scutaro, there might be alternatives that make this organization better and are the right alternatives for this team,” said Anthopoulos.

I think someone in the NL is going to go after Johnny Mac as a starter while developing a prospect under him. Mac is actually a pretty good small ball player, is going to have a small price tag, and makes sense for a rebuilding club as an interrum solution. Scutaro I see going to Boston, who can offer him extra yrs/money and eat the difference if he falls off the map, or to the Mets if they deal Reyes in the offseason. Scutaro would make a very good bench players for either team in a year or two, and fill the SS hole as a starter until then.
Barajas is the only one I see realistically coming back.

yea, I have seen some chatter about BoSox maybe going after Scutaro with counter-argument highlighting that he is not a big trade up from incumbents

I think the key is that it’s not necessarily about a trade up long term, but that the Red Sox need some stability in SS next year, and past that, can afford to overpay for a super-utility guy for the rest of his contract. I personally don’t understand why they’re so sour on Lowrie, but it sounds from what I’ve read that he’s not going to get a real shot at starting short.

Most overrated Blue Jay player this decade.

Rios was actually named to a couple of AllStar Games.
How about Josh Phelps , tabbed early this decade as the “catcher of the future”, as the most overrated Blue Jay player this decade?

How about the most overrated Blue Jay player in the 1990s?
I nominate SS Eddie Zosky.
