Who Could Make Our Prospects List? Auburn Edition

Continuing our look through our minor league system to see who could be put on our prospect list, we get to short-season Auburn Doubledays. Most of the players there, that might make the list, are very young and likely need another year of good play to make our list.

Sean Ochinko: Sean was picked in the 11th round of the 2009 draft and go into 52 games at Auburn. He caught 20, played first for 15 and DHed for 16. Hit quite well, .324/.382/.537 with 6 homers.  Likely a bit early to call him a prospect, but if he can keep it up over a full season.....He'll be just 22 next year.

Ryan Goins: A 4th round draft pick in 2009, he played in 3 levels since the draft, 3 games at Rookie League, 24 at Auburn and 19 at Lansing. His numbers at Auburn were very good (.297/.349/.366), not so great at the other levels but he only got into 46 games in all. Will be 22 next year but could be a good one.

Yan Gomes: Picked up in the 10th round this year, Yan played 4 games in Rookie League then 60 in Auburn.  Between the two he caught 32 games and DHed 32 games. All told he hit .300/.370/.439. 22 next year, it is too soon to put him in the top 30 of our prospects but maybe after next year.

Ryan Schimpf: 5th round pick this year, played a couple of games in Rookie ball then 34 in Auburn.  A 2nd baseman, he hit .293/.381/.444 in the two stops with 3 homers and 5 steals. Again will be 22 next year and again a handful of pro games shouldn't be enough to get on the prospects list though the team picked him in the 5th round so they like him. Wouldn't be surprised if he moves up a couple of levels next year.

Markus Brisker: I'm listing him because he made a few prospects lists last year. An outfielder, he was drafted out of high school in the 6th round of the 2008 draft. He played in Auburn and Lansing last year and didn't hit at either stop, going .170/.246/.197 between the two. He will just be 19 next year and has the tools, but will have to show them on the field at some point.

Dave Sever: A pitcher picked up in the 16th round of last year's draft. Made 12 starts for Auburn had a 3.34 ERA, 57 K and 15 walks in 67.1 innings. 23 next season so will have to move up the levels but could.

Matthew Wright: Drafted in the 12th round in 2008, Matthew, a lefty, made 12 starts for Auburn and had a 3.77 ERA and 73 K with just 23 walks in 59.2 innings and he gave up just 2 homers.  He had a similar season in Auburn in 2008. 23 next year, he'll have to move up some.

Egan Smith: A lefty pitcher, picked up in the 7th round of the 2009 draft, Smith made 9 starts for Auburn and had a 2.56 ERA, he struck out 36 and walked 11 in 38.2 innings. 21 next year.

is Sean Ochinko any relation to Chad, the flamboyant wide receiver from the Cincinnati Bengals

That’s Ochocinco, and he changed his name legally to it as a tribute to his jersey number ‘85’.

Ochinko and Smith sound promising

Goins and Schimpf

Deserve strong consideration for the top 30 (back end). Fairly well regarded coming out of college and put up decent numbers.

Also, we seem to have decent success in the 10/11th rounds:

2008 – Farquar/Antolin
2007 – Emaus
2006 – Campbell
2005 – blech
2004 – K.Bell – traded for Scutaro
2003 – Mastny

I would estimate that that’s better than average success at that point in the draft. The most recent four are legitimate prospects.
