Another Wished for Blue Jay Trade Bites the Dust.
A lot of us were hoping that the Blue Jays might be able to trade for J.J. Hardy to fill our need for a shortstop for the next few years. It's not going to happen, the Twins traded CFer Carlos Gomez to the Brewers for Hardy. I guess if the Brewers were looking for a cheap, strong defensive CFer we really didn't have anyone to send them.
If you are wondering what free agents are available this offseason MLB Trade Rumors has the list here. They also have a list of shortstops that might be on the trading block. Just ignore Hardy at the top. You think we could try for Brandon Wood?
Take a look at the guys thought to be available and tell us which one you would go after if you had Alex Anthopoulos' job?

With Hardy off the table, I think I consider resigning Scutaro as my top choice to fill the hole from free agency. If not, I’d really look to see what kind of package might get Mike Aviles or Jed Lowrie from either the Red Sox or the Royals, and then go after a cheap plus defender like Everett or MacDonald as a backup option if either of those rookies get hurt or really struggle.
Or, if we’re expanding payroll in a decent manner, I make the decision whether to accept Scutaro as possibly an expensive utility bench player for two-three years, and risk on a trade for a SS prospect that’s getting close.

The Red Sox would be selling extremely low on Jed Lowrie if they moved him after the rough year he had. Plus, the Sox best internal option(Jose Iglesias) is at least a year or two, if not three years away.
The SS free agent market isn’t a great one so I think the Sox are more inclined to give Lowrie another shot.

I agree, but it really feels a little like with Hardy, that the organization has given up on him. That could just be perception, but there’s already been hints linked in Red Sox blogs that they are likely going to be aggressive acquiring a SS, either via free agency or through a trade.
So I wonder if say, a package with either Arancibia/Jerolman, plus a near ready starter or reliever might peel him away.

If the Sox trade or acquire a SS, they may look to deal Lowrie for low minors, high upside guys. Like a Pastornicky or Pierre, plus an arm. The Sox aren’t in a position where they’re concerned about close-to-the-majors guys, they just like to stack the system.

scutaro....
I don’t like the option of resigning scutaro….. he will be getting a big raise after last season and since he is aging he probably will be no good to the jays when the jays are ready to contend….. so unless the Jays are going to up the payroll to like 150M then I think the 2 draft picks are worth more to the Jays then Scutaro….. I would like to get a top ss prospect in a Halladay trade….. i think texas would be the best solution here….. trade halladay for one of their 2 prospect SS / their 1B Smoak or Davis / and their pitchers Nieves or Holland….. either way try to get a top prospect SS for next year….. or if that cannot be done then let johnny mac play full time…. take the 2 pics for scut though

Scutaro could be around
according to this article, it may be hard for Scutaro to exercise his FA options
However, some class A free agents might be in between a rock and a hard place, like Toronto’s Marco Scutaro. The Jays look like they want to cut payroll, so giving Scutaro a bigger contract isn’t an option, and having just come off surgery, how many teams would be willing to sign him for several million and give up the two first-round picks to the Jays in doing so?

well it would be one first round pick...
and for most teams it would be less than that. For the worst 15 clubs, its a second rounder. and its a second rounder or worse for any club for which Scutaro is their second Type A signing.

Brandon Wood will most likely be the Angels every day third baseman
if Chone Figgins is not re-signed. And right now it does’nt look like Chone Figgins is coming back next year.

Brignac
I really like going hard after him…good D and a bat that was decent in AAA, he’s blocked by Bartlett and Zobrist in the Rays IF – he could be similar to an Elvis Andrus? Not sure what the Rays would want in return but there could be a match?
I agree with NOT bring back Scutaro if he signs somewhere else…if he doesn’t bring him back on a one year deal. Basically offer him arbitration and hope someone else wants him, if they do the Jays get the picks. If they don’t they go to arbitration and sign him to a 1 year deal. Either way a win-win for the Jays.
