Lyle Overbay for Chris Snyder
Update: Steve Gilbert from MLB.com says the trade is "on hold".
Overbay's on-base skills would be a welcome addition in the Diamondbacks lineup. He is owed $7 million next season in the final year of his contract. He turns 33 in January.
Snyder is owed at least $11.25 million through 2011 -- $4.75 million in 2010, $5.75 million in 2011 with a $6.75 million option/$750,000 buyout in 2012 -- so if no money changes hands in the deal, the Diamondbacks would save $4.25 million over two years.

love it....have to wait to see on any moneys changing hands
Is this salary trimming or not? Hard to say.
It has to mean more moves or Ruiz/Dopirak to 1B.

Or Lind at first...
Would save money over signing Rod Barajas.

On Lind?
They’ve been talking about moving Lind to first for a while.

so just listened to AA's conference call, so Halladay trade sounds likely IMO, also no
big free agents this year, but I did like him stating he wants the best and biggest scouting department in the big leagues, very different from JP there. I’m truly excited, I also like the increased scouting in Latin America, I’m on board.

yea, it would be nice to have Scutaro transitioning into scouting after his playing career is done. He seems to a have a good baseball mind. Assuming he is interested in returning to Venezuela, it would be nice to have him in the organization but that is a big if and dependent on a lot of contingencies.

I’d like this move a lot. If he comes back from the back surgery, Snyder’s got a lot of upside. At the very least, he’s a decent younger player who can anchor the plate for a few years, to see if they have anything in Arencibia or Jerolman. I’ll miss Overbay’s defense, but the thing that is going to be the highest level available for the lowest price this offseason is a 1B/DH type, so the Jays don’t have to rely on Ruiz proving his fall wasn’t just a fluke.

Snyder seems like a good player
Snyder has very, very nice plate discipline and decent power. He’s also been terribly unlucky this year thanks to a .241 BABIP while posting a not too bad 16.9 line drive%, which should equate to a BABIP somewhere near .290. Two questions: is his defense as a catcher good? And is he going to be healthy?

His defense is supposed to be very good.
Healthy is something a doctor would have to decide.

snyder
On the plus side, he only has 5 errors in 487 games which is pretty sweet.
On the indiffirence side, he is hitting (avg/obp/slg) 233 / 333 / 398 vs. Barajas at 238 / 284 /408 – it is not a big tradeup.
Moving Overbay would relieve some congestion at 1st.

A 50 point edge in OBP is not a big trade up?
ok……
Error counts mean little. but the age difference is a big deal.

Yeah
It’s amazing how many people severely undervalue OBP. Patient hitters also force the opponent’s pitcher to show more of his stuff early on, which can’t be a bad thing.
Also, Snyder’s batting avg of .233 is twisted by that improbable BABIP, should be more in the region of .270 probably, which also means his OBP should be a world apart from Barajas’ OBP. Besides, Barajas will be getting even worse..

we should share that BABIP news with Thigpen. Perhaps there is an MLB career for him afterall.

Nah…too many K’s for someone with so little power, and not a special walk rate either.

did Thigpen have chronic
low BABIP vs LD%?
by ayjackson on Nov 8, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
In 2007, the only season where he got even a half decent amount of PA, he had a .286 BABIP versus 24.1% line drives. So not that chronic.

i am not such a big fan of OBP vs. average because a walk and a hit are valued the same in OBP and AVG
however, a hit usually advances a baserunner more than one base while a walk only moves a baserunner one base
I am not saying OBP is worth nothing, ceteris paribus, it does have value — but its value does have limitations

Not making an out counts most of all.
Barajas and Snyder have roughly equal batting averages and slugging averages. The difference, Snyder makes many fewer outs. Not making outs is the most important skill a hitter can have.

This would be a good pickup…even if their not looking to be contenders until ‘12-’13 Snyder still would be in his early thirties at the point and probably still above average in terms of getting on base and throwing out base stealers, both of which he does really well. He also has some pop in his bat.
JP and Jeroloman aren’t exactly setting the minor leagues on fire either and getting Snyder would increase the chance one of the two of them becomes useful to the Jays as a backup, as opposed to one of the two developing into a starter.
