Jays Pick Up Reliever Zech Zinicola in Rule 5
Here is the press release:
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have selected RHP ZECH ZINICOLA from the Washington Nationals organization in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft held today in
ZINICOLA, 24, opened the 2009 season with
Here is his Baseball Reference page. I know nothing about him, but looks like he knows how to strike out batters. The Jays will have to keep him on their active roster for the full season or offer him back to the Nationals at half the Rule 5 cost ($25,000). I thought the bullpen looked crowded before this, I'd imagine this means Accardo will be non-tendered. Anthopoulos' special assistant Dana Brown came over from the Nationals and would know Zinicola so I'd imagine that has something to do with his pick up.

I wouldn't read much into his seemingly poor showing at AAA
great K and BB numbers and a ridiculous .417 BABIP against stranding only 52% of runners. Looks like bad luck in a small sample size.
Is it all that exciting to pick up a 24-year old righty relief pitcher in the Rule 5? No, but he could probably do as good a job in the pen as Accardo or Camp for less money. Also, he’s named Zechry Zinicola, which rules.

maybe he could get a clothing sponsorship from ZZegna (they sometimes provide sports commentator clothing on Sportsnet)
Zech Zinicola wears ZZegna
oops — that was kind of weak

There we go. We have a nickname all ready for him. Now all he has to do is make the big team so that we can start using it.
we have to keep him on the active roster or
the Nats can get him back, so we should know soon enough.

We also picked up Ruben De La Rosa
in the Triple A phase, again from the Nationals. Another reliever with a 13.6 K/9, 22-year old out of Rookie ball. I actually like this move, nothing could be made out of it but low risk and putting out a flyer on a guy who could do well at higher levels.

It's the spaghetti strategy...
Keep throwing it at the wall to see what sticks.
It’s not too bad a strategy as sheer quantity will produce quality. You have to be ruthless though and continue to winnow out the chaff (players you don’t think will progress enough to make it to the big club) from those who you think will, otherwise your minor league clubs will get swamped.
Dana and the Nats...
We just picked up two Nats. IF – we didn’t have Dana on board with his “inside” knowledge of their system – obviously – I doubt we take a flyer on either guy.
HOWEVER – this is EXACTLY what AA is talking about by increasing our “professional” scouting. NO QUESTION there are guys in the deep minors of ALL systems that can be steals IF you’ve scouted their systems really well. ALSO – in a trade knowing who the “throw ins” should be could get us a few diamonds in the rough.
