Jays Sign John Buck
Don't the Jays know it is Sunday? After a couple of months of not doing anything, they choose the day of rest (and NFL Football) to start signing guys. Anyway, Jason Stark (any relation to Tony?) on ESPN.com, says that the Jays have signed former Royals catcher John Buck to a one year $2 million deal. I thought the MLB passed a rule that all free agent catchers get 2 year deals. Nice signing, but I'm sure the Jays will keep looking at improving at catcher. Click on his name to see his stats, he's not Johnny Bench, but he's not bad. He will be 29 next year. We've added two Bucks to the this week.

Well he's pretty weak defensively
and isn’t good for anything but hitting for power, but it’s better then having no active catchers on the roster. I’d rather have Barajas but this isn’t a bad signing.

8 HR's and 36 RBI in 180 AB's. That's not bad power-wise.
If he gets 430 AB’s like Barajas did last year, that’s 18 HR and 86 RBI – a slight upgrade over Barajas. I don’t about defensively, but offensively, it’s pretty good. And he’ll be a type B free agent next year, so you can’t go wrong.

i really liked Chavez as our backup catcher
if Buck is our starter i will be quite upset.

Still holding my breath for Doumit
But Buck isn’t a bad player.

Scouting Report
Buck boasts plenty of power and runs fairly well for a catcher. Behind the plate, he knows how to handle a pitching staff.

I guess the Jays needed a catcher but the last thing they needed was another player who will hit sub .250, strikeout a lot with occasional power. They have that in abundance. They were better off signing someone to a minor league and have them battle it out.
I agree with Doumit, at least he has a chance to hit close to .300 if he can ever stay healthy, its more of a gamble but the payoff is better.

Should have just kept Zaun all along.

I thought Zaun wanted to leave because he did not like being relegated to backup … but alas he wound up at back up roles anyway. But yes, I would like to have picked him up this offseason
