Adam Lind Wins Edgar Martinez Award
Just for a momentary break from the all Roy Halladay all the time station, we will mention that Adam Lind has won the Edgar Martinez award as top DH. Congratulations Adam. Here is the press release.
Today MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL announced that ADAM LIND captured his first Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, named in 2004 in honour of the former Seattle Mariners designated hitter and 2010 Hall of Fame candidate.
LIND, 26, appeared in 95 games as a designated hitter in 2009, batting .299 with 21 home runs and 74 runs batted in. The Muncie, Indiana native posted a .539 slugging percentage and a .362 on-base percentage in addition to collecting 200 total bases, 60 runs scored and 26 doubles as a DH. Overall, the left-handed hitter appeared in 151 total games this season, batting .305 with 35 homers and setting club highs with 114 RBI and 46 doubles. His 81 extra-base hits were second best in the A.L., while his 114 total RBI placed third and his 35 homers, his 46 doubles and his 330 total bases all ranked fifth.

Congrats Lind...
But i`d like to see him slide into the 4th spot.. with Hill batting 3rd… Would be a great 3-4 punch
Lind was terrible last year in the 4 spot
He admitted he pressed too hard.

and given the almost negligible difference a lineup change makes...
if the player himself thinks it negatively affected his performance, keeping him at 3 makes a lot of sense

Changes are hardly negligable
If you are creating an extra 3-4 runs per season by optimizing your lineup why would you not do it.
If moving him to the 4 spot makes him hit differently
and in particular worse, then you’re actually deoptimizing your lineup.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
and if you think the move might get you 3-4 runs in a season then why?
I’d guess he would be worth more runs by getting the 17 extra at bats in the 3rd slot.
yea, he has definitely shown he does not like to hit 4th. Not sure I understand that. But maybe he grows into it. If no, than probably not such a big deal.

He showed this year that he didn`t like hitting in the 4th spot.. But over time, when he learns not to press, and we have a more potent line up, then maybe… If not, maybe Hill will slide in there, with Travis in the 5th spot, for years to come
hmmmm, i do not think Hill is a cleanup hittier

I don't see 3-4 runs a season being a big difference
And, like has been said above, if he changes his hitting style because of the 4 spot, then it seems unlikely to actually even give us that extra 3-4 runs.
However, maturity and experience means he might be able to avoid his issues with the 4 spot.

optimizing your lineup does, as you said, create 4 or so runs per season. However that’s only if you go from the worst possible lineup (Lind/Hill 8th/9th, McDonald leading off) to best (whatever it is, since we don’t really know). No one is ever going to put their worst possible lineup on the field, and if a player says that he consciously makes himself worse in a certain spot in the order it would be foolish to put him there.
Congrats to Lindsie
He’ll likely move to the 4 spot next year.
