Around SBN: Miikka Kiprusoff Wins 300th Game, Buffalo Crushes Boston

June 25th, 2010

I did some math today. Assuming the Doc trade goes through (Looks like a foregone conclusion) and assuming he is the opening day starter (also a pretty good asumption) and assuming he pitches every 5th day (Can't see them going on short days rest in the spring) and assuming he stays healthy (Geeez, there is alot of assumptions), Doc will pitch June 25th, 2010

I've never been to a Blujays game. What an unbelieveable first game that would be. I'm thinking BBB roadtrip! I realize many of you live in Toronto already and there wouldn't need to be a road trip, and I realize there is others already planning to go to Colorado. I'm just throwing this out there that this would be a great time, and I'm already planning the trip with a buddy. Thoughts? The more the merrier!

Is it Wednesday yet??!?!?!?

This is how I see the game going down.

Doc pitches 8 scoreless innings. Bottom of the 9th, 3-0 Philies.
Brad Lidge walks the bases loaded, gets Wells to pop up to second and catches Bautista looking at 3 straight strikes down the middle.

Moonraker walkoff Grandslam.
Rodgers Centre goes crazy. Halladay punches Lidge in the shower. Good times.

I wouldent plan anything right now. Seeing as he most likey wouldent be pitching on that day.

Injuries, Rain outs, moved up a day cuz of a day off, or just pitching on 4 days rest will be the downfall of your trip. I mean if you get tickets now and doc pitches the day before. your gonna be pissed when JA Happ tosses a shut out instead.

but lets hope he does pitch during that series cuz id like to go to that game and boo the crap out of him. LOL

I will be cheering him.

Not only did he do a great job when he was here but the manner in which he departed enabled the Jays to trade him for value.

Roy contributed to the Jays even on the way out.

You`ve NEVER been to a game?

Holy crap……I will confess that I never saw Doc pitch at the Rogers Centre though…i`m crying a little as I write this

Not a Jays game

I was at a meaningless Padres/Rocky’s game in 2002 but I’ve never seen the Jays play. Rodgers Centre isn’t exactly on my way home from work.

I never saw him at Roger's Center

But I finally managed to get down to Seattle and watch him this year – glad I made that trip to see him work, even if it wasn’t his best performance.

it’s in Canada, it’s Rogers Centre :)

I got taught in french for the first 18 or so years of my life

So now whenever I’m in doubt about -re or -er I always just go opposite of what the french spelling is. Hence why I spelled it as center (rather than centre).

i really hope he pitches one of the games that weekend.

I’m definitely going to be there.
I was lucky enough to see Doc in person multiple times, some that come to mind…
His 22nd win in 2003 to lock up the Cy Young
Opening Day in 2006 out dueling Johan Santana
Opening Day in 2009 where he was stellar and than the amazing AJ vs. Doc complete game in May.

by torontocoltsfan on Dec 15, 2009 6:38 PM EST reply actions

If I were you, I’d plan on coming down for the whole weekend; since you won’t know for sure too far ahead of time what day he’ll be pitching (if any).

Yeah there could be rainouts, delays, injuries, who knows.

Oh guys....you know Craig....

He wasn’t suggesting the Doc would definitely pitch on the first day of the series. Despite his gushing over some B level actress, he’s a smart guy, he just pointed to the first game of the series.

by Tom Dakers on Dec 16, 2009 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

B level? she is 36 years old (37 on Saturday) and already done 196 episodes of Who’s the Boss?, 178 episodes of Charmed, and 10 episodes of My Name is Earl.

How many prospective actresses slinging dinner and drinks out there dream of achieving even a fraction her career? She has had a dream life. If there was a hall of fame for actresses, she would have to be it. She is like the Cal Ripken of acting.

I wonder how much better Roy’s stats are going to be now that he will be pitching against weak-hitting pitchers

by aagoodfella on Dec 16, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Look what it did to Cliff Lee's #'s

What I’m interested in is what batting will do to his numbers. In the past Doc has shown and said he has zero interest in batting. I wonder what batting practice and batting in gametime situations will do to his rhythm as he seemed to be a creature of habit.

Johnnie Morton: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

by craig in calgary on Dec 16, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

it will be fascinating to watch

the Phillies will have quite a decision … should we let Roy pitch his complete game or bench him for a pinch hitter?

by aagoodfella on Dec 16, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

I think Doc will set an MLB record for number of bunts attempted in one season. Either that, or the percent of pitches taken.

by Belligerent Burkie on Dec 16, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Seems likely

As he’ll probably pitch more innings as a pitcher than anyone else in the NL in 2010.

by wroth91 on Dec 17, 2009 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

zero interest?

i remember him taking a few bonds-like cuts at the all-star game despite reports all AL pitchers were ordered to leave the bat on their shoulder!

My thinking is: Doc is such a great player, the only reason he hasnt had a 40 home run season is because Cito thought giving the ABs to Kevin Millar was a better idea.

by ucantcoachthat on Dec 18, 2009 3:31 AM EST up reply actions

it would be

if he was in any way being serious. But it’s a little silly to accuse someone of cognitive bias when they are so obviously speaking hyperbolically.

I had a dream last night that Doc came back to the Rogers center

Pitched really well, people had loads of signs and stuff saying “i love you doc” and whatnot…

We were down 5-2 in the 7th when Vernon Wells hit a solo homerun to left centre, 2nd deck… Jamie Campbell was commentating though…

by ohmybosh on Dec 16, 2009 2:42 PM EST reply actions

this is what would want.

when Phillies comes to town
-around 34k to 37k people
-lots of sign saying “doc you’re the best – we love you Doc – we miss you Doc” etc
-before the first pitch is thrown fans are chanting “Halladay” “Halladay” "Halladay “Halladay”
then Doc comes out of the dugout ( assuming he doesn’t start on the opener game of the series) and wave at the crowd!!!!
epic moment, and fans go crazy screaming applauding and such.

a man can dream

by elpikiman on Dec 16, 2009 4:40 PM EST reply actions

34K to 37K?

More like 50K.
The Rodgers Centre was full to see AJ Freaking Burnett…There should be no problem selling out that game!

Johnnie Morton: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

by craig in calgary on Dec 16, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

They will sell out the game he pitches

but that was in reference to the first game of the series (which Doc might not pitch). I think elp means that people will show up just to welcome him back

yes

a welcome back gratification from fans

by elpikiman on Dec 16, 2009 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

One problem

Craig with your scenario, If Halladay pitches 8 scoreless he is coming back out for the 9th to finish it.

by goodbye JP on Dec 16, 2009 11:16 PM EST reply actions

He had an elevated pitch count

Due to a 42 pitch at bat against Jason Bay.

Oh ya, Jays have Jason Bay in my scenario :)

Johnnie Morton: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.

by craig in calgary on Dec 16, 2009 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

I hope

In your scenario the Blue Jays are 30 games over .500 and the Yankees are 30 games under .500 and the Red Sox are winless.

Seems realistic enough.

Just read Sun Article

Bring up agood point, the G20 SUmmit and Hallday’s return will be same time, buildings right beside each other..

CAN u say CRAZY traffic?

by bowling_kid25 on Dec 18, 2009 12:44 AM EST reply actions

there is always something going on around that area. One time I went to see a game when George Bush and Bill Clinton were in town and so were all the anti-war protestors. They are a source of entertainment unto themselves. I am sure the anti-globalization protestors will provide an entertaining backdrop for Roy’s return.

by aagoodfella on Dec 18, 2009 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

well no shit sherlock lol

Its just gonna be huge, with all the ppl going to see Doc’s Return and the summit

the last line about traffic was the major point _

by bowling_kid25 on Dec 18, 2009 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

well, they said the same thing when Bush + Clinton were here, anti-war protestors, Jays game and there was one other event, cannot remember now

anyhow, all the local radio was saying stay away, stay away, it is going to be crazy congested and I guess folks did stay away, cuz it really was not that bad …. that said, I would still recommend folks take GO or TTC, LOL

by aagoodfella on Dec 19, 2009 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

I checked it five or six times, and every time it showed that Doc's pitching on the 24th, and would therefore miss the series.

Check it again. Am I missing something? If he is indeed pitching, I’m getting my tickets as soon as I can.
