Game 5 Thread Jays at Indians

Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Indians, Apr 10, 2009 4:05 PM EDT

Game Restarted

I'm really looking forward to this series against the Indians. I'm interested to see Richmind's start today and it is our first start against a lefty starter, Scott Lewis. I am interested to see if Cito gives Millar a start. But the highlight game of the series is tomorrow's game between Doc and last year's Cy Young winner Cliff Lee. Sunday's game has David Purcey against Anthony Reyes. Best part is all three games are on TV.

If you didn' see it on one of the highlight shows, Giant's reliever Joe Martinez was hit in the head by a hard line drive off the bat of Mike Cameron. If you want to see it there is video on MLB.com here. Maybe it is because I just did the profile on John Olerud, but why don't pitchers wear batting helmets on the mound, or if that would be too bulky something that would give them some protection.

Thinking about it, batters wear the helmet because the pitchers are throwing the ball towards them at up to 100 miles an hour, but then the ball off the bat goes back at  a faster speed, some of the time. It is rare for a pitched ball to hit a batter in the head but it does happen, but is it really all that much less often for a pitcher to get hit with a ball? I don't know, maybe it would seem 'unmanly' or something for a pitcher to wear a helmet, but then bleeding from the head isn't that much fun either. Anyway I wonder if pitchers will be wearing a helmet sometime in the near future.

Today's lineup:

Snider gets the day off, I'd much rather have Lind play LF than Bautista but that's me. Millar gets the start at first. I'm still not a fan if his but will hope for the best. Join us in the Thread.

but no commentary… actually this is pretty neat.

yeah, this could be scary,

I like the rest of the matchups, but this one has me worried

In 2006 having towers prevented any

win streak, I have the same feeling with Richmond

He'll be gone by the fourth time through the rotation

for Cecil, I still think.

Who knows, maybe he will surprise everyone and be good.

He never allowed more than 3 runs

or went fewer than 5 innings. Better than Towers could say.

He’s not good right now…

Yep

It’s still early…..no worries!!

It bounced at his feet

If he’s going to be afraid to dive for anything he’s going to have a terrible year defensively.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

It’s also entirely possible that he just didn’t feel comfortable with his read on the ball and felt like letting it drop was the safer play.

PS - anyone see the article in SI

Where they look at statistical models for measuring defense? Johnny Mac got a nice mention there.

by wroth91 on Apr 10, 2009 4:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They looked at 4 guys who are better/best at their position based on whichever metric it was they were using. Johnny Mac was their “Zone Buster” for shortstop.

by wroth91 on Apr 10, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya

They said even though he declined from the previous year, he was still the best SS in terms of +/-

Oops

Need to read a bit closer. They were talking about his 2007 year. Everyone else was referenced in terms of their 08 season in the article…

Richmond was fine.

Unless he was going to give up a run in the 5th, in which case he was retroactively terrible.

So if the game is cancelled

is the make up played from this inning or do they start all over?

it becomes a "no game"

and nothing played to this point counts

wow

i didn’t know that… i think that’s a terrible rule.

by ryantheduke on Apr 10, 2009 8:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I assume it's because if you have more than 4 innings of a game to play after it resumes

You’ll probably use a starter, which is highly unlike what you would have done if the game had resumed that day, but if it’s 4 or less you’ll use relievers like you would have done.

"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"

9:20PM EST start

that’s the latest from sportsnet.

by ryantheduke on Apr 10, 2009 9:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If I understand it correctly

That still would require the game to be resumed tomorrow from where it stopped.

by wroth91 on Apr 10, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If we complete this inning

since it’s not tied, the game can be final.

by wroth91 on Apr 10, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If it was tied after 5 or more whole innings when called they used to start over

now they restart from where they left off.

Wilner lied and said Downs got a tattoo of a snake on his neck to be more intimidating on the mound after Wilner told him one of his blog commenters said he wasn’t intimidating enough to close.

I really like the mentality of the offense this year

At least they know how to come from behind and also how to score in clutch moments, unlike last year. I think that`s a huge confidence boost when you KNOW you`ve come from behind before and you can explode for huge runs at any time.

Take a look at this...

The Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings, two teams from the triple-A International League, played the longest game in professional baseball history in 1981 at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

The game began on Saturday, April 18, 1981, and continued through the night and into Easter morning before finally being suspended. Although most leagues have a curfew rule that would have suspended the game, the rule book that the home plate umpire had that night did not contain one. So the teams continued playing until the president of the league, Harold Cooper, was finally reached on the phone sometime after 3 a.m. Finally at 4:07, at the end of the 32nd inning, the game was stopped and would be resumed at a later date.

no idea

I really don’t know much about cricket at all. But when I was in residence at university in first year, the Cricket World Cup was going on and a bunch of the guys on my floor were really excited about it so I watched a game or two with them. I asked them how they make sure that the games are over in 1 day for such tournaments, and I’m pretty sure they said that those games are 50 overs per side. But that could be only for major tournaments and not regular season play or whatever
