Game 5 Thread Jays at Indians
Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Indians, Apr 10, 2009 4:05 PM EDT
Game Restarted
I'm really looking forward to this series against the Indians. I'm interested to see Richmind's start today and it is our first start against a lefty starter, Scott Lewis. I am interested to see if Cito gives Millar a start. But the highlight game of the series is tomorrow's game between Doc and last year's Cy Young winner Cliff Lee. Sunday's game has David Purcey against Anthony Reyes. Best part is all three games are on TV.
If you didn' see it on one of the highlight shows, Giant's reliever Joe Martinez was hit in the head by a hard line drive off the bat of Mike Cameron. If you want to see it there is video on MLB.com here. Maybe it is because I just did the profile on John Olerud, but why don't pitchers wear batting helmets on the mound, or if that would be too bulky something that would give them some protection.
Thinking about it, batters wear the helmet because the pitchers are throwing the ball towards them at up to 100 miles an hour, but then the ball off the bat goes back at a faster speed, some of the time. It is rare for a pitched ball to hit a batter in the head but it does happen, but is it really all that much less often for a pitcher to get hit with a ball? I don't know, maybe it would seem 'unmanly' or something for a pitcher to wear a helmet, but then bleeding from the head isn't that much fun either. Anyway I wonder if pitchers will be wearing a helmet sometime in the near future.
Today's lineup:
Snider gets the day off, I'd much rather have Lind play LF than Bautista but that's me. Millar gets the start at first. I'm still not a fan if his but will hope for the best. Join us in the Thread.

MLB.tv has the sound effects and overlays from the RSN broadcast
but no commentary… actually this is pretty neat.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Jays vs soft tossing lefties has
not been good in recent years
Platoon splits don't just disappear
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah, this could be scary,
I like the rest of the matchups, but this one has me worried
In 2006 having towers prevented any
win streak, I have the same feeling with Richmond
He'll be gone by the fourth time through the rotation
for Cecil, I still think.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
He never allowed more than 3 runs
or went fewer than 5 innings. Better than Towers could say.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
You’re telling me, this is the first game I have had a chance to watch too, work has been keeping me extra busy.
Is tomorrow's game at 1, then?
I hate the Fox blackout.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
It bounced at his feet
If he’s going to be afraid to dive for anything he’s going to have a terrible year defensively.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah I'm thinking that....just my eyes say he's not got the same range as he used to...could be wrong I guess
Cowboy On and Cowboy Over
but not Cowboy In.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
PS - anyone see the article in SI
Where they look at statistical models for measuring defense? Johnny Mac got a nice mention there.
They looked at 4 guys who are better/best at their position based on whichever metric it was they were using. Johnny Mac was their “Zone Buster” for shortstop.
Ya
They said even though he declined from the previous year, he was still the best SS in terms of +/-
Hafner = today's Cabrera?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Gameday and the audio feed
mlb gameday is ahead of the audio feed by several seconds. If I had the number of the booth, I could tip off Alan and Gerry as to what’s about to happen!
It was pretty deep into the corner
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
If he's looking to the right to see if the throw is going to be strong and on target
he’ll be dead to rights even if it isn’t.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Ponson and KC vs the Yanks today,
I bet the final box score is pretty ugly in that one, even without Arod
Man, he's been hitting hard
As far as I’ve seen (only been able to watch 2 games so far) but he’s looking very good.
just got home
and turned it on in time to see marco’s home run.. i’m loving that guy.
also, that’s some crazy rain. will we make it to the end?
Damn, you had me excited
Was wondering if I missed out on some new rule change… oh well, I’m content for Richmond to go 123 and call it.
If they resume...
at least it will likely be the bullpen from here on in.
And, whenver they resume...
SNET West viewers get the shaft again because of the stupid Flames-Oilers game in 40 minutes.
dude on sportsnet
says it looks promising that they will resume. but i think they just want to keep us hanging on.
a loose 8pm est starting time
because it’s opening day and they really want to play it.
yeah they will try to get it in....
if at all possible…….is too bad that Richmond won’t get a shot at the win…
Richmond was fine.
Unless he was going to give up a run in the 5th, in which case he was retroactively terrible.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
yeah for a 5th starter he wasn't doing that bad....
first inning wasn’t great but the rest wasn’t so bad.
So if the game is cancelled
is the make up played from this inning or do they start all over?
Meaning Lind and Scoot lose their homers
and Lewis gets his chance to win his first 5 starts again.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
wow
i didn’t know that… i think that’s a terrible rule.
I assume it's because if you have more than 4 innings of a game to play after it resumes
You’ll probably use a starter, which is highly unlike what you would have done if the game had resumed that day, but if it’s 4 or less you’ll use relievers like you would have done.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
9:20PM EST start
that’s the latest from sportsnet.
If I understand it correctly
That still would require the game to be resumed tomorrow from where it stopped.
If we complete this inning
since it’s not tied, the game can be final.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
KK
Was confused because I knew part of the rain out rules were changed, but I wasn`t sure exactly how.
Ya, I finally managed to find a copy of the rules
That outline that. It`s a pain in the ass to find though.
If it was tied after 5 or more whole innings when called they used to start over
now they restart from where they left off.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Which is why I think it's funny to use him
against managers who pinch hit.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
very nice pitching
i like this guy.. looks like he’s stuck in the late 80’s though. :D
If his entrance music was Bow Chika Bow Wow funk music
it would be perfect.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Especially since Jamie said Cito
has said BJ is coming in this game
I guess I`m still scared from previous years
I know he`s been hurt and all… but I`ve been terrified whenever he runs out. He`s not close to as automatic as his first year here.
An OPS over 1 is pretty good if I understand that STAT?

good bunt

the numbers actually say
that sac bunting is beneficial as the home team when tied or down 1 in the 7th or later. At least according to BP.
a little dangerous with
the force at 3rd and a slow runner on 2nd though, it takes a really good bunt, which Bautista supplied

Scoot will move to 1B
and Mac to SS, I imagine
Do you like Scoot more in LF with Bautista at 1B?

For the uninformed
Wilner lied and said Downs got a tattoo of a snake on his neck to be more intimidating on the mound after Wilner told him one of his blog commenters said he wasn’t intimidating enough to close.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
I'd imagine it'll be him and Ryan
one thing we can be sure about, won’t be League again, haha

I say were in the thick of it 'till September!!!!

I don't want to rain on the parade
but these bullpen shenanigans aren’t going to fly against the Yankees, Sox and Rays. If we keep playing like this again the AL East, we won’t be in it for very long.
Yeah, but if we're 20-3 after April
JP probably gets some leeway to improve things.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Frankly I'm hoping the Padres tank early and look to move A. Gonzalez
Peavy would be nice too, but I don’t think we can afford the prospects they’d want.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
He moved Jackson and Bush for Overbay
And Gonzalez is better than Overbay ever was.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
A-Gon would be a great acquisition
both for the Jays and for my fantasy team.
the games
sure feel different, don’t they?

sure hasn’t looked too good either
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I really like the mentality of the offense this year
At least they know how to come from behind and also how to score in clutch moments, unlike last year. I think that`s a huge confidence boost when you KNOW you`ve come from behind before and you can explode for huge runs at any time.
yeah is nice to not think 'we've lost' when we are down a run....tho was the say at the end of last season
definitely
and it’s nice that we are sometimes ahead by a bunch of runs right off the bat instead of waiting for 2 turns through the order to get something started.
Wells
draws the walk

all I have to say is
if the Jays contend this year, Rince, I, and most everyone here on the blog will have to let the mainstream sports guys hear it for the rest of the season

i bet this is up there..
for longest game played in 1 day. i mean start time to finish.
Take a look at this...
The Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings, two teams from the triple-A International League, played the longest game in professional baseball history in 1981 at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
The game began on Saturday, April 18, 1981, and continued through the night and into Easter morning before finally being suspended. Although most leagues have a curfew rule that would have suspended the game, the rule book that the home plate umpire had that night did not contain one. So the teams continued playing until the president of the league, Harold Cooper, was finally reached on the phone sometime after 3 a.m. Finally at 4:07, at the end of the 32nd inning, the game was stopped and would be resumed at a later date.

that is cricket-esque
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Any cricket game that you expect to finish in one day
is limited to 20 overs per side.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
Really?
I know 20 overs is a standard, and that’s what they play in the Indian league. Are 50 overs played on as regular a schedule as baseball?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
no idea
I really don’t know much about cricket at all. But when I was in residence at university in first year, the Cricket World Cup was going on and a bunch of the guys on my floor were really excited about it so I watched a game or two with them. I asked them how they make sure that the games are over in 1 day for such tournaments, and I’m pretty sure they said that those games are 50 overs per side. But that could be only for major tournaments and not regular season play or whatever
Yeah, but if they run out of time
they have a formula to decide if the home team would have won.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
it's funny
I grew up watching cricket played in the park in our neighborhood by the South Asian immigrants and was never able to figure out the game at all

it's a great site
that was just a bizarre moment. I thought the strangest part of the argument was that somehow we were duty bound as Jays’ fans to take Alomar’s side

If Koufax could still get in today (could he?)
then Ichiro can get in without his Japanese stats.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
So as long at they are less than 10 years service in Japan they are stuck?

They can ask their team to post them
but the team doesn’t have to. Of course the Seibu Lions got a few years’ salary from the Matsuzaka posting fee, and he was a year from free agency.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
what if the guy has 10 years time?
Does the posting system still come into play or are the free to sign with any team in any league?
If you're eligible to be a free agent
then I don’t think they can post you. ie. you can’t be posted out of a free agent contract.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
but didn't Ichiro have 10 years of service before coming to Seattle?
and he was posted
Did he have 10 full years?
Or was he going into his 10th year?
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
not sure
I was just going off the top of my head. I’ll see if I can look it up
you are right
he was posted following his 9th season in NPB
wouldn't've been
bad to get Ryan in one of these last two games

They did in the west...
We are watching the ontario feed

that always makes me nervous
I remember Towers used to live there and it always freaked me out, seems like there is so little margin for error

So many to pick on this night

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
gotta be Scooter
put them ahead twice in the game
don't forget that webgem
saved a run, likely, since Choo followed it up with a home run
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
can and should
in my opinion
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Not in WPA
they have UZR on their per-player pages, but I don’t think there’s enough data yet to put anything in.
"He almost has to start. Do you believe in miracles?"
wasn't stretched out enough
for that third inning
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I know that's a lot
but it was a bit like a lot of games in one, so maybe it’s appropriate

Lind did very well too

that was great to see
had some good swings
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that was awesome
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that would be great
thanks

shouldn't be a problem
Sunday’s Easter and we’re going back to DC on Monday, so you might have to cover those two days though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
well
once through the rotation, and I can’t say it was too discouraging
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
it has been great.....I'm pretty pleased with the rotation...once thru...richmond wasn't so bad tonight
Great attendance in the thread also
hope we can keep this going all season. Should be fun.
Magic number: 157
As long as it keeps going down, it’s going to be a fun year.
