Shaun Marcum, who underwent Tommy John surgery in September, will throw in a bullpen this week. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks, he might climb a major league mound sometime in July or August.

Yeah,
Didn’t BJ come back early from his Tommy John last year? That has worked out awesome…..
I just don’t see the point in rushing him back, especially since Litsch isn’t out for the year now, and Romero and Jansen are close to coming back too.

and he was a reliever
less than a year to recover from TJ and start major-league games is way too short a time. the last time the Jays have seen someone do that, it was Victor Zambrano.

I'll trust the Doctors
Tommy John surgery has always meant 1 year away, if Marcum can come back a couple months sooner, and we are in a pennant race, then i’ll be happy to have him back. If we fall back out of contention, wait till next year
If you go out and you’re looking for the girl to wink at you and she hasn’t winked at you before 12 she isn’t going to. You might as well go home.

The problem
We actually will have some depth with Janssen and McGowan (Doc, Ricky, Litsch, Richmond, Tallet would be great to have at this point in time ;). ) likely returning from a less serious injury. While Marcum would be a welcome return to the rotation, it could hurt us in the short and long term by rushing him back.

great points
the other thing is that, even assuming Marcum is healthy enough to pitch, which I doubt he will be, control is the last thing to come back from TJ (it can take 18 months to return) and Marcum is definitely dependent on his control of his fastball and other pitches. One of Marcum’s strengths is that he throws any pitch, in any count, and can command it for a strike. If he doesn’t have the command he needs, he’ll be missing his spots and/or letting batters sit on pitches, which will mean lots of home runs, something that he’s always had to deal with.
I’d rather see him take time for his arm to fully recover and then go through a rehab and spring training to get his command back. Even if he can take the mound, it won’t help the team if his control hasn’t returned.

yeah, just doesn't seem like a good idea
i understand he may be ahead of schedule and that’s fine. i’m not saying they should deliberately slow him down, but there is no reason to rush him back, either. I think we’d all rather see Marcum back healthy next year than see him reinjure himself this year.

I heard that Marcum is further ahead than McGowan and they aren't expecting Dustin back till 2010

I'd gladly give Nick Swisher Purcey's slot in the rotation

First time poster, been lurking since a couple years ago.
I think you guys have a great site.
However, are the Jays serious?
The team that has lost to injury in the last 3 years: Chacin, Ryan, Janssen, Accardo, Marcum, McGowan, Marcum again, Janssen again, Litsch, Ryan again and R. Romero is now even THINKING of letting Marcum make starts 10 months removed from TJ surgery? It’s past April 1rst, so I don’t get the joke…
Thanks!
I agree. the thought of Marcum, less than a year back from TJ, trying to start games for the Jays, really scares me. If the Jays are in a pennant race and Marcum’s command isn’t as sharp as it could be from the layoff and the surgery, there will be a temptation to overthrow, and that’s scary.

I'm really starting to wonder
About the Jays training staff. I mean, in baseball, one of the more non-violent sports out there, we see what feels like a way higher percentage of injuries than in hockey, football, basketball, etc… Am I only seeing the bad or is this something that is an issue?
I say this because we just can’t keep guys healthy and it seems just to be an acceptable outcome when a guy doesn’t finish the season because he got hurt. Our team just chalks it up to “bad luck” and says next year. When will teams look at changing old training methods that seemingly don’t prevent injuries? It just frustrates me to no end to see the same old, same old happening when success with those methods is hardly proven or guaranteed.
I wrote about this years ago when the Yankees fired their head weight lifting trainer and I heard about some of the stuff he was doing in their gym – removing olympic bars and adding in isolation machines and the like. That’s a recipe for injury right there. Is this like this in the Jays’ system?
