That Was a Lot Less Fun, Yankees Beat Jay

Yankees 8 Jay 2

Not going to spend long on this, Scott Richmond, for the second start in a row, had a terrible second inning. This time he didn't survive it. He gave up 5 runs in the 2nd and was pulled after giving up a double, homer, two triples, another double, a walk and a single. With a few starters almost ready to rejoin the team Richmond is putting himself into jeopardy of being removed from the rotation.

Offensively we didn't have all that bad of a day; 7 hits, 6 walks and a lot of hard hit outs. We just didn't get the hits when we needed them, often pounding the ball into an outfielder's glove. Rolen had a good day with 2 hits and a walk. In fact every player in the lineup had at least a hit or a walk tonight.

Suckage Jay was Richmond (-.392 WPA). No Jay of the Day.The real bad news is Aaron Hill fouled a ball of his shin and left the game after he finished the at bat. Johnny Mac played the rest of the game at second and had a hit in the 9th. But we really can't lost Hill. He has been amazing this season.

Good new is we are 23-13 and will be in at least a virtual tie for first if the Red Sox beat the Angels (GO ANGELS). Tomorrow Tallet goes at the Yankees while we face the big man (and do I mean big) CC Sabathia (how big is he? When he sits around the house, he sits around the house). Hope we continue to hit the ball hard.

Update: Bastian tweets (is that the term, twitters? something?) that Hill is ok. just came out of the game as a precaution and Hill "...just told them I don't want to be sitting tomorrow". Sounds good.

Romero

was the opposite today from his first start. Didn’t get hit much but walked 5. First rehab start K’d a ton but was too hittable. Hopefully he finds the right balance the next rehab start.

While what Hill said is encouraging . . .

Didn’t he say that the concussion was minor enough that he wouldn’t even skip a day?

From 31 May 2008:

Angels on Friday.
Hill sustained a mild concussion on Thursday after a collision with shortstop David Eckstein in shallow center field during a victory against the A’s. Hill, who was elbowed by Eckstein during the play, didn’t feel as though he would need a day off on Friday. Toronto decided to practice caution and listed Hill as day-to-day. Check back to see if the second baseman starts on Saturday.

Damned Sportsnet

I really was most interested in seeing the meeting at the mound when Cito pulled Richmond, but Sportsnet cut to Wolfe jogging in from the bullpen. I was very curious to see Richmond’s reaction and how he handled it and also Cito;s handling of him.

Oh Dear...

Those pesky LAA lads beat our beloved Sox. Dear me – what a pity. Chuckle, chuckle.

Is is too bad isn't it.....

I wasn’t going to watch when I tuned in and the Sox were up 4-0 but a couple of home runs later and it was a great game.

that was not fun

as long as Hill is ok, though, it’s allright. We can bounce back tomorrow. Seems pretty different from the concussion situation, jesse. With a concussion you never know how bad it is or how long the symptoms will last until they’re gone. With a ball off your foot or leg if it hurts a lot you take an x-ray when the swelling goes down a bit and that tells you mostly all you need to know – either something is broke, or it’s just a bruise and will go away after a day or two (though it may hurt a good amount for a while)

Yeah, of course

My point wasn’t that Hill could be out for the year, I’m just saying that he has been known to say he doesn’t need a day off in the past. If it’s just a bruise and he favors that leg tonight, with an artificial turf surface, it’s possible that he hurts the other one — something that isn’t entirely different from the concussion situation. I’d rather him say he doesn’t need a day off after the swelling goes down than right after the game ends. Hill is obviously a tough guy who wants to play every day, why not make sure he’s good to go before penciling him into tonight’s lineup?

That being said, I’m obviously not the one examining him and as long as he is healthy, I’d love to see him back in the lineup

AL East -- not a pitching powerhouse

Jays should be thankful for their pitching relative to their AL East rivals (boooooooooo)

How AL East teams rank (out of 30) in the MLB based on team ERA

Blue Jays (#8)
Rays (#20)
Red Sox (#24)
Orioles (#27)
Yankees (#30)

Come on, we can take these punks! Go Jays!

Rays

man that Edwin Jackson trade looks even more awful (don’t understand the Edwin Jackson, he’s slightly worse then McGowan but identical nonetheless).

They are taking too long with Price as well.

A Tale of two Bluejay games

It was the best of times (Tuesday), it was the worst of times (Wednesday)
I can’t wait to see what Charles Dickens has for us tonight. Hopefully he hates fat people.

I remember 92 and 93...

AND… we lost lots of games then too. Remember, baseball is a series of 162, 100 yard dashes – or to be PC 100 meter dashes – no way you can win them all. What is WONDERFUL so far is that we haven’t had a REAL losing streak. The only depressing thing is we haven’t had a REAL winning streak either.

Personally – I’m happy winning two of every three – 108 wins will do nicely!

oh yeah

it would be nice to win tonight and take the series though!

I agree

If for no other reason to get the national media to not say stuff like “SEE, they can’t win against good teams without Doc”

Much To Be Said for Consistency

One of the great things about this year’s team is the consistency of play and the contribution from so many players. So far, the Jays have excelled through slumps and injuries without having to lean on a win streak. This shows great professionalism and depth in my view.

If the price of no win streak is the absence of a losing streak, I say we should take it.
