Now Broom, You Must Now Sweep for Me / The Dust That Fills My Room: Game Thread, Red Socks at Jays
Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays, May 31, 2009 1:07 PM EDT
Thanks to They Might Be Giants for today's thread. Likely the site could sustain itself on nothing by TMBG lyrics.
So, you're pretty excited about the Jays taking two games from the Sox so far this series, and of course you want a sweep, but you just can't conjure up quite as much hate for the opposing fans that you used to be able to back in the days of Schilling? Have no fear, Joanna has your back. I have to say, that level of douchery is impressive even for the Nation. Someone, please ask Rolen about that sometime....
Anyway, back to the task at hand. Ricky Romero pitches for the Jays today while Jon Lester goes for Boston. Lester has really been hit and home run unlucky this season so far, though he pitched well against the Jays in the Fenway series. Romero had an up and down outing last time out and looks to eliminate the down part this time. The Sox are tough on lefties so Ricky will have to make his pitches and use his whole arsenal to succeed.
The Jays send out the expected lineup against the lefty, while the Sox use JD Drew against Romero and bat him second, with Rocco Baldelli apparently still feeling the effects of his collision with the wall yesterday.

So what are the odds that if we are winning it's League and Downs again for the 8th and 9th

off day tomorrow, no?
I could definitely see it, but maybe Frasor instead of one of them

wouldn't surprise me
though I wouldn’t mind seeing Richmond get a crack at it either

have they both pitched two games in a row?
by SuckaMD on May 31, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes
though League, at least, hasn’t used many pitches either time.

Downs actually
has thrown even less pitches than League (19 for Downs, 21 for League), so it’s not too much of a stretch for them both to pitch today.

yep, must be three games in a row for Downs right
but then there was an off day
by Tom Dakers on May 31, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you could say the same for League
he didn’t pitch in that last Baltimore game, but he warmed up for a long time and so threw a lot of pitches that day

hope not
i think the Jays need to use bullpen more judiciously than they have been … the practice of constantly using the same reliever who recently did well until he gets completely worn out has proven to be flawed IMHO … after 2 consecutive appearances, it is time to give League a break

sounds like complete bull sh*t
I cannot speak to whether Rolen has any negative views on Millar or Clemens but the rest of that comments certainly lack credibility so it casts much doubt on those and other comments
implying that Rolen is just going though the motions is completely bogus … if you ever go watch the guy play, it is obvious he is busting a gut for the team … when he is on the bases he is always chugging real real hard which has to be tough for a man his size
Rolen’s defensive play this year has been great
last year Rolen was injured alot and missed many games … this year he come back strong … either he is very lucky or did a lot of work in the offseason … in some interviews, he talked about how he worked on his shoulder positioning for at -bats … this would support the idea that he worked alot on his game in the offseason which is the mark of a true professional, and not someone going through the motions
bottom line, Rolen’s actions on the field certainly contradict the contents of that web page which, as such, make that page seem like a bunch of libelous crap
personally, if i had to pick three (non-pitchers) best playing their roles this year, I would pick Hill, Scutaro and Rolen

Anyone else think that our pitchers do poorly at 2 strikes
by Tom Dakers on May 31, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think
that is part of having control type pitchers instead of the AJ-type power pitchers. You get to 2 strikes more but can’t always put the hitters away

I think part of it is also
out pitchers generally get ahead of hitters so they are often hitting with two strikes. Our starters’ K/BB ratio is tops in all of baseball, pretty impressive

Way back in 1986
Damaso Garcia had a particularly bad day in an awful start to the 1986 season. He got so frustrated that he freaked out and took a can of lighter fluid to his uniform and torched it in the clubhouse to the surprise of all his teammates.

he missed high and away with it just previously .. and it was obviously a hitter’s pitch

that was so bad

if a batter hits a foul tip with 2 strikes and the ball becomes lodged in the catcher’s equipment, is the batter out? What if the ball bounces off the catcher’s mitt/body, but he manages to catch it before it hits the ground (either on purpose or accidentally)?
