In a Baby Blue Sedan, and I am Doing the Best That I Can: GameThread for Florida Marlins at Toronto Blue Jays, 12 June 2009, 7:07 PM EDT
Miami Marlins at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 12, 2009 7:07 PM EDT
The Jays look to get back in the win column tonight after being shut out last night and turn to the hero amongst our heroes, Doc Halladay, to put them in position to do so. Doc looks to extend his major-league win total to 11 tonight against the Marlins at Rogers Centre. He will be contested by Ricky Nolasco, who has struggled mightily this season to the tune of a 2-6 W-L Record and an ERA over 8.
The Doc is coming off two straight complete games during which he has 20 strikeouts against one walk and allowed zero extra-base hits. He tries for his second straight shutout and fourth complete game overall tonight, and considering that his last start was just 97 pitches, let's hope he can do it again, and this time in the Flashback Friday powder blues.
Maybe Cito has been checking out Bluebird Banter, because he's mixed up the lineup tonight, raising Vernon Wells up to third and dropping Alex Rios to sixth in tonight's lineup.
Oh yeah, tonight's Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The thread title tonight, by the way, comes courtesy of "Baby Blue Sedan" from Modest Mouse's This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About.

good lineup move
I do not think it really matters if Wells or Rios gets moved down. The important thing is that they are broken up from the 3-4 spot, You cannot really afford to have them one after the other in the lineup. Can be a momentum killer. Hopefully they get fired up and paired up again if need be.

oh well....my worry is lind will go into another slide and we'll end up hearing he can't handle the clean up spot.
that would be unfortunate
Jerry once asked Alan what he thought about how much stock people put in lineups, he said that the reason people think “oh, _ can’t handle that spot” is because people remember when someone does poorly in a given spot and rarely when they do well. he also said that no professional baseball player would ever say “oh damn, i’m hitting 7th. i’m bad in this spot. i’m probably going to ground out.”

i've been watching baseball for 35 years
and i have never wavered in my belief in the importance of lineups
people have watched for 90
and never wavered in their belief in the importance of RBI and fielding percentage, but it doesn’t make them right
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
thing about fielding percentage...
is back in the early days of baseball there were lots of errors so fielding percentage mattered. But not when a good fielding shortstop is 97% and a bad one is 93%…it really isn’t a big deal.
it's actually misleading
it suggests that the player with the better fielding percentage is better, and my guess is that that’s only as likely as a coin flip to pick the better fielder
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
It overrates good hands
and underrates good range.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
it wasn't at the start of the century because errors happened far more often
but now, if we get a couple of errors in a game it’s a lot. Means so much less.
but it's been repeatedly and undeniably proven
that they make almost no difference in run scoring.

i have also rarely seen such a lousy home plate umpire
if he keeps calling the far outside strike, some batter is gonna get killed by an inside pitch
it's anecdotal
but I feel like the home plate umpiring is worse this season

Rios
swung at a high pitch out of the zone so could not get the bat around
wins rbis and fielding percentage stats are all important
though they obviously don’t tell close to a full story
there are far more telling statistics
and lineups basically make no difference, though they’re stressed so often by the media

at some point cito or someone else has to get on the ump
you are allowed to get ejected, cito
hasn't he announced
he plans to go the whole season without getting booted
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
did he really?
then some assistant/coach/bat boy should kick some dirt on the ump already…this is ridiculous

I think I remember an interview where he said that
but maybe I dreamt it, haha

we scored runs
and that was awesome

wonder if Wells
will avoid the Rios incident after this game, haha. He doesn’t seem like the type at all

is this his 2nd inning
typically when it strikes
this is really his third inning though

i say skill first and nationality second
I'm not even sure
it should be second, but yeah
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
definitely
it’s a good tie-breaker, all other things being equal. I just think you need to make sure all other things are equal. Let’s face it, comparing these kids is ridiculously difficult, especially after the first round or two
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
yes you are right
this just happens to be magnified since its a canadian player drafted by a canadian team
yep
being CDN is a bonus … winning is what counts
good point
but is a kid from BC really a “local boy” for the Jays?

all right second period starting
keep me informed please
max talbot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1-0 pens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the "lets go pens" chant is pretty damn loud!
here’s whats funny though… detroit/pittsburgh are playing against eachother in hockey and baseball tonight :-p
refs blew call in hockey goal too
all ref/ umps suck
im talking pro refs etc
they are so often swayed by home field fans etc (though not in pens game case)
by norm depalma on Jun 12, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions
it's funny you say that
I’ve often wondered whether that’s not the case, and whether it doesn’t account for some of the disparity in home team records

funny thing about the hockey game
today in the US, we are doing the analog to digital switch over…. NBC is delaying it to 11:59PM… so basically if this game goes into overtime and you dont have a digital TV or a convertor, you’ll have a static signal at 11:59 looool
Yup.
Just a wee little bit.
Just got home, been tracking the score on my cell though. Been reading the complaints about the pitching and I just saw an example of it.

I think Cito wants this game

How much time did he get to warm up?
My phone only updated that Richmond was in for Halladay.
Not really relevant, just curious how quickly he can get into a groove.

heck remember League
he started off horrible … could not buy a strike
then he got good again (except for tonight so far … lol)
league has figured out carlson
but have they figured out league?!
cmon brandon!
I don't think a hitter can solve League
the question is more, has League figured out League?

i love how league always swears very loudly after he gives up a run
and how the cast always catches it
BJ or Carlson at this point as #1 situational lefty
They’re similar pitchers when you think about it
well can't blame League for that
Hanley shouldn’t have even swung at that pitch, let alone hit it. And comes back with the big K

of course they go to a lefty against Lyle

the way we play tight games, I don’t think we’d survive the playoffs even if we made it there. This team needs some oomph from somewhere…
But Joe Morgan tells me power doesn't work in the playoffs
and you have to manufacture runs!
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
the worrying thing
is that the Jays have two consecutive games of weak hitting

oh well
let’s hope we can pull out the next two (hey, we beat up Greinke)… but damn this was a disheartening loss.

What a sad night to watch the game…
My highlight of the night:
Ninth inning, Barajas up to bat, crowd is mostly all gone, 4 year old girl starts chanting “Let’s go Blue Jays” clap clap All the leftover fans/drunks support her as loud as possible, it was cute and about the only good thing to take from the game.
