In a Baby Blue Sedan, and I am Doing the Best That I Can: GameThread for Florida Marlins at Toronto Blue Jays, 12 June 2009, 7:07 PM EDT

Miami Marlins at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 12, 2009 7:07 PM EDT

The Jays look to get back in the win column tonight after being shut out last night and turn to the hero amongst our heroes, Doc Halladay, to put them in position to do so.  Doc looks to extend his major-league win total to 11 tonight against the Marlins at Rogers Centre.  He will be contested by Ricky Nolasco, who has struggled mightily this season to the tune of a 2-6 W-L Record and an ERA over 8.

The Doc is coming off two straight complete games during which he has 20 strikeouts against one walk and allowed zero extra-base hits.  He tries for his second straight shutout and fourth complete game overall tonight, and considering that his last start was just 97 pitches, let's hope he can do it again, and this time in the Flashback Friday powder blues.

Maybe Cito has been checking out Bluebird Banter, because he's mixed up the lineup tonight, raising Vernon Wells up to third and dropping Alex Rios to sixth in tonight's lineup.

Oh yeah, tonight's Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.  The thread title tonight, by the way, comes courtesy of "Baby Blue Sedan" from Modest Mouse's This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About.

good lineup move

I do not think it really matters if Wells or Rios gets moved down. The important thing is that they are broken up from the 3-4 spot, You cannot really afford to have them one after the other in the lineup. Can be a momentum killer. Hopefully they get fired up and paired up again if need be.

that would be unfortunate

Jerry once asked Alan what he thought about how much stock people put in lineups, he said that the reason people think “oh, _ can’t handle that spot” is because people remember when someone does poorly in a given spot and rarely when they do well. he also said that no professional baseball player would ever say “oh damn, i’m hitting 7th. i’m bad in this spot. i’m probably going to ground out.”

thing about fielding percentage...

is back in the early days of baseball there were lots of errors so fielding percentage mattered. But not when a good fielding shortstop is 97% and a bad one is 93%…it really isn’t a big deal.

by Tom Dakers on Jun 12, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

it's actually misleading

it suggests that the player with the better fielding percentage is better, and my guess is that that’s only as likely as a coin flip to pick the better fielder
