Jordan Bastian just announced that Roy Halladay will be placed on the 15-day DL tomorrow, likely retroactive to his last start.

This comes after Doc cut a bullpen session short today after just 15 pitches.  Come back soon, Doc.  More on who will be called up as we know.

Update:  Why not make it 3 in one day?  Scott Downs is going to the DL with a sprained left big toe.  No replacement yet, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be Accardo, who has done a fine job at Las Vegas.

By the way, Doc says he'll be ready to return by June 28th, when he'll be eligible.  That means he'll only be missing a couple more starts.  Is one of them when he is supposed to be pitching here in Washington D.C., a game for which I have tickets?  Yes, it is.  Grrrr....

Last years rotation:

Doc, AJ, Mcgowan, Marcum, Litch

Hurt, Dead to me, hurt, hurt, hurt.

I really can't blame AJ...

When the Yankees threw an obscene amount of money his way. Especially when you consider that he seems to have reverted to being a .500 pitcher, making last year an anomaly.

I guess he could have not exercised the contract termination, but that would have meant he would leave a lot of money on the table. The Yankee offer was so huge it would have blown out any stay-with-the-Jays discount he might have given.

I think, though, in the end, he will regret going to the Yankees even though he’ll have made a lot more money.

Ugh

I hate the .500 pitcher term….

Better to use his ERA, WHIP and BB/9 when talking about AJ

We'll just add his name to the list of guys who broke the bank and did not win title.

It’s a pretty long list now Mussina, Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui, Arod, Damon, Abreu?,
Sabathia(hopefully). I know there are more.

by Chesapeake Ron on Jun 17, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Abreu was acquired in a trade with the Phillies

which didn’t really make sense, because later that year the Phillies were buyers.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

This is almost comical, if it wasn’t so sad.

Well

So that means he misses his start against the Nationals where he “might” have to run the bases and swing the bat?

Considering most people were talking about skipping that start anyways. It works.

Ger mentioned in a earlier thread about agreeing with Griffin that the Jays should of just thrown him on the DL regardless at the start of all of this. I am sure Griffin will use this as proof that he was right.
I still think the Jays played this one perfectly. They can put him on the DL retroactively and since there was a chance he didn’t need it why bother throwing him on there right away.

exactly

as long as he didn’t push things too hard in the bullpen session and aggravate anything, it should work out. I’m just mad because I won’t get to see him pitch this weekend!

agreed.

though having the extra man on the roster for yesterday’s game (and in all games against NL teams, really) is quite helpful, I agree.

By the way, Doc’s injury? Totally J.P.’s fault.

well

we know Downs’ injury is Wells fault. If Wells hadn’t gotten those two hits, the Jays lose in regular innings, Downs never enters the game, and he never gets hurt. So unclutch!

whoa whoa whoa whoa

I know you are being sarcastic Mr. Hugo…but Wells’ struggles’ are well documented and he has been very justifiably called “Unclutch” this year.

I'm unclutch?!?!!?

Actually thats true.

I was playing slow pitch 2 summers ago and my team had to win the last game of the round robin to make the playoffs. My average at this time was around .900. I’m up with the bases loaded and 1 out and tie game. Of course instead of proceeding to get up and hit the ball pretty much anywhere on the field which would have scored a run, I stepped up and pointed at the left field fence. The 13 year old girl on 1st who hit infront of me told me to quick being a jackass and just get the hit. I pretended to switch hit and proceeded to strike out. The guy behind me popped up to short and we lost in the bottom of the 9th. I was just sick after.

Oh....

Mighty Casey? Is that you?

Anywho, I’m not doing much better this year for my company softball team. We are now 1-6 after another loss last night. I haven’t got a hit in the last two games (Granted that only spanned 4 AB’s since I was near the bottom of the lineup each time) but last night was the worse, got under two pitches and made really really shallow pop outs…

haha

of course I agree he has struggled mightily. I’m not sure about the “clutch” business, and I think it is way overplayed generally (did you see when Norm assured us that the Jays would lose yesterday when the game went into extras because of how “clutch” the Phillies were, btw?) but there’s no doubt Wells has struggled in high-leverage situations and he’d be the first to agree, I’m sure.

I'm a football guy, so here is my clutch analogy.

Most accurate kicker of all time – Mike Vanderjagt was terribly unclutch
Most clutch kicker of all time – Adam Vinatieri. He would routinely muff 36 yard FG’s in 34-10 blowouts. Name another kicker you would want down by 1 with 0:02 left on the clock.

I'm not sure the situations are analogous

definitely not saying that there are no clutch kickers in the nfl, though I don’t care enough to say one way or the other

So what if that’s now 2 weeks?

this is why regression analysis was invented … you take a whole bunch of dependent variables (injuries) and independent variables (overpitch outings) and run a regression and voila … you find that the rate of injury is much higher following overpitch outings … of course some might say this is just witchcraft … NOT

But doesn't that apply primarily to arm injuries?

The legs aren’t under anywhere near as much stress as the shoulder and elbow. You wouldn’t expect an injury to a guy who jogged 133 strides, or even 266 or 400.

I have a few Blue Jays on my fantasy team

including Halladay, Down, Rios, Lind and Aaron Hill. I am glad to hear Halladay is going to be fine and that most likely will be reto. I had him on my bench any way this week. Downs hurts much more if he is out for a while. By the way you guys have the best blog name on SBN.

hope...

Accardo gets the call and is the closer while Downs is out, REALLY hope Cito doesn’t put League or Ryan in there to close games.

Would be nice for Cecil to get the call for Roy but like posted above they may not even need him so another bat might be in order…Delucci?

by bunner on Jun 17, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

just wondering

What the heck was Downs doing batting when they still had Chavez on the bench and a 5 run lead? Cito may be a great players’ coach for the hitters but he sucks when it comes to managing a lineup, particularly the pitchers. Of course he won’t try to punch his players out or claim he fought in Vietnam. Plus he helped us win the only two championships the Jays have ever had, so I maybe shouldn’t knock him so much. I just thought it was crazy that he had Downs in there hitting last night and my fears were apparently justified.

well I wouldn't get on him for that....

but I might be in the minority….Downs didn’t throw many pitches…having him finish things up shouldn’t have hurt too much. And really, is a fluke injury.
