They Try To Kick It; Their Feet Fall Asleep: 6/24 Game Preview and Thread, Reds at Jays
Cincinnati Reds at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 24, 2009 7:07 PM EDT
Today's post title comes from another song by the band Metric ("Combat Baby," one of their best). Maybe this doesn't interest many others on the site, but I picked it because I spent a good part of the afternoon watching the U.S. beat on #1 ranked Spain in the Confederations Cup semi-final! What a game for United States soccer! And there is something oh so sweet about ducking out of work to watch sports, isn't there?
Anyway, back to the Jays, they try to make it 3 straight in tonight's game against the Reds. Scott Richmond pitches for the Jays, while Bronson Arroyo goes for Cincy. Jeremy Accardo (almost called him Jozy, soccer still on the brain!) is questionable for tonight's game with a dehydration/calf cramp that has now morphed into a minor groin pull.
I've gotta run, band rehearsal, but I should be around for the second half of the game. Let's go Jays!
Russ Adams moves from LF to DH but no other changes for the Jays (there's a surprise). Bronson Arroyo pitched against the Jays one year ago tonight, we can only hope that tonight goes as well as that start, the Jays scored 10 run against him in just an inning plus.

it was freaking awesome

Toronto FC are hosting tonight
…. so attendance may wane a bit at tonight’s game
in other news, Jays are contemplating a name change to Toronto BC and Maple Leafs contemplating name change to Toronto HC
The MLS team name that bugs me the most is Real Salt Lake
Who’s the king of Salt Lake, that they get a royal team?
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
If multiple teams merged to form one united team then it's fine
DC United makes no sense though.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
I agree
though I find it pretty egotistical that ManUre call themselves as such, when there is another giant team with the same city in its name
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" -- Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
soccer team names are all about tradition and I think it's great
it’s how you keep your sport from having names like “Predators” “Thrashers” “Raptors” and “Devil Rays”

The best team name in sports was the Ottawa Renegades

does anyone know the protocol for uniform
grey, white, dark top or powders?
What do you mean?
Like when they can be worn?

Aside from the powders
I’m not sure. Powders they only use on home games on Fridays, but beyond that I’ll have to google.

MLB Rules 1.11(b)
Seems to indicate that whites are for the home team and a different color is for visiting teams.
But I know that I’ve seen and heard teams flip-flopping for this and that reason.

Baseball should get rid of the away jerseys
The only time a team should not wear its own colour uniform is if it is playing an away game against a team that wears a similar colour (such as both teams wear black). Actually, I think this should apply to all sports teams. I’d love to see the Leafs play in their blue all the time (except they’d have to change if they are playing in NY because the Rangers and the Islanders wear blue as well.)
Especially in baseball, where the team on offense can only be specific spots on the field of play
FWIW, I really don’t like the current Jays uniform that much. It strikes me as being wrong that the Blue Jays uniform isn’t very blue.
i found it

so the dark shirts that they sell, are just for practice it looks like

At least for some clubs. I see other posts and sites saying that it’s the equipment manager or that the starting pitcher policy comes from Dusty Baker’s days with the Cubs.

Did they barrel roll into the wall on a double into the corner?

Don't think so...
What’s the context? Glitch?
I don't want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it. ~Rogers Hornsby
2k9 has some really bad glitches
I saw one where if you bunt it foul and it stops, the game thinks its still in play so it will let you keep running the bases, but the fielders’ AI thinks it’s foul so they don’t pick it up. Net effect, foul bunt home run.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Oh, gotcha
2k8 isn’t that bad for glitches and such. Only thing that frustrated me for a long time was my fielders colliding but I finally got mad enough to open the manual and look it up for “call the ball”. Saved me a controller or two.
I did read the reviews about 2k9 and they helped me decide to not purchase it. I’m waiting for 2k10 since I only have an Xbox 360 and PCs available to me.

When I worked at a Pizza Hut we had steamed pasta that looked better than that
and baked pasta that also looked better than that.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Also, having steamed pasta meant you could sub alfredo sauce for tomato sauce on a pizza
Although briefly that was an official menu option with a lower quality alfredo sauce.

hard to believe that pizza hut actually has
a “lower quality” alfredo sauce than what they’d normally give you
"The NY Mets are my favorite squadron" -- Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
alfredo sauce
actually does come from Italy, but it was invented there to serve clueless American tourists who didn’t like real Italian food

Really?
I prefer Northern Italy cooking with the olive oil and garlic thrown in everything.

yep really
the best Italian food I’ve had, other than the stuff made by my relatives there, of course, was in the Liguria. Pesto and lots of incredible seafood and homemade pasta.
Should have you over for dinner, haha, we definitely don’t skimp on the garlic. Though I’ve pretty well bastardized (or evolved, if you prefer) about half my family’s old recipies by mixing them with asian cooking techniques and ingredients

nice thing about him being older is jays dont feel as forced to ease him in and limit his innings
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
yep... 2003 I think... but he claims he was "always a starter"
I told him to keep it up like this and he’ll get a 3/30 deal in a couple years
lol
Ha, yeah i'd imagine so
glad he got the win yesterday, as well.

lol, no, but we talked about cy, oddly enough
he said he agrees that cito is real tough on the bullpen, and that’s why cy is hurting….
but he claims the opposite is true with the starters…
That's a nice candid comment from him.
Kinda cool. Wish I lived in a city with famous people…
Though Jerome Iginla gave me a wave last summer after I chatted with him the day before in a park (by accident – didn’t realise it was him until 2 minutes into the conversation).
