I've Been Hearing You Say Some Things That You Don't Mean: 6/27 Game Preview and Thread, Phillies at Jays

Philadelphia Phillies at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 27, 2009 1:07 PM EDT

The Jays look to continue their excellence when playing the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon after a big win yesterday behind some nice hitting and great pitching by Ricky Romero.

Jordan Bastian is now reporting that Rod Barajas was not  placed on the DL yesterday (meaning, I guess, that Kyle Phillips hasn't been called up).  Rod apparently felt better today and is now day-to-day.  So that's good news, I guess.  I hope the Jays don't do anything that could reaggravate the injury - you know how hammies are.

Unfortunately, it's a good news-bad (though not unexpected) news from Bastian today:

Cito, asked if Downs will be ready when eligible to come off DL: "I hope he is but I really dont know. I have no confidence in that at all."

The Jays have another lefty going today in Brad Mills.  Mills really struggled in his first ever mlb start so let's hope that he can settle down and throw strikes this time.  The Phillies aren't generally a forgiving offense (though as a lefty Mills certainly has the advantage.  The Phills counter with a lefty of their own in J.A. Happ.  The Jays put out possibly their worst possible offensive lineup today, featuring Kevin Millar batting cleanup and hitting 4th, Jose Bautista in leftfield, Raul Chavez behind the plate, and Sir John MacDonald at the hot corner.

Today's title is in honour of Rod and comes from the great Ted Leo and the Pharmacists song "La Costa Brava."  I'm a huge Ted Leo fan.  The little one and I had an enjoyable morning - we went for a nice long hike before it got too hot (wow, is she ever getting heavy) and now I'm sitting back and ready for some baseball.  Let's go Jays!

6 straight high fastballs

2 of them called strikes. Not a great start for Mills.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

yep … and his pitching style looks much like Romero … so I think he has a reasonable chance of making it …. maybe if whoever said “let me work with Romero” did the same for Mills, the Jays would have another strong arm in the org

by aagoodfella on Jun 27, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arnsberg?

The difference is Romero had been around long enough that he was approaching bust territory. Mills was drafted in 2007, right?

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

yes

well, technically he was drafted in 2006 and 2007, but yeah

yea, pretty sure arnsberg

but really, their pitches (style and look) seem very comparable to me … so it should not be too much different to get Mills working IMHO

I don't disagree that they're similar, but Romero has a better fastball

and a better change. Mills has a better slider

How does this guy continue getting trotted out there to start games? Terrible in AAA, even worse in the majors. Is there no one better in the minors?

This is how you beat the Jays at least once a series. Slot a lefty in when you are playing a day game following a night game. You get a AAAA lineup basically.

Hmmm, we'll have to check that out.

I think my mom is going to come down too – lots of quilting stores out there – so we might have to get the hotel approved by her :P

looks like could get a 4 star place for like $75 a night...but that was for 2 I think...

I don’t want to stay in a dive but don’t want to pay $250 a night

Ya, that's our dilema as well

That would be a sweet deal, though I’m wondering how likely it will be to get a last-minute hotel room during a Jays game. Don’t they normally sell out?

looks like it can be done....seattle's a big city.

my worry is I don’t want to be fair from safeco cause I’m not renting a car.

No, Kelowna for the summer

I go to school in Edmonton though.

Worst of both worlds: +45 degree summers and -45 degree winters….

That would be the ideal solution

But more of a perk than a requirement for us.

Heh, ya, I figured

I remember going to watch games at BC Place and then we saw the price for parking. Parked about 6 or 7 blocks away for about 2$ instead.

Don't they have a monorail?

I’ve been there a few times but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

So I hope so :P

LOL, sounds pointless then

Maybe I’m spoiled with the LRT in Edmonton stopping at the major spots – University, Arena, Stadium

Ya, the distance isn't as much a concern for us

Since we will be driving there (~5 hour drive for us + border crossing) and we’re all big on walking if necessary. Worse comes to worse, we take public transit (shudder :P)

Agreed

Guaranteed sub .500 record for inter-league. Good work Jays.

Who would have bet that the Jays would finish at least 4-2 against the World Champs and STILL not be .500 inter-league?
