Far Away From Those Winter Streets / On a Cloudless Day / Your Memory Blows Away: 6/28 Game Preview and Thread, Phillies at Jays

Philadelphia Phillies at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 28, 2009 1:07 PM EDT

The Jays are hoping that the ugly memory of yesterday's game blows away this afternoon as they try to take the Phillies series.  Not much to say about a game like yesterday's -- in one game, Mills demonstrated both why he could be a good major league one day and why he's not quite ready for the majors yet.  He's back in AAA now, with Doc ready to make his start tomorrow.  Brian Tallet will look to follow up on an incredible 3-days rest start his last time out, while the ancient one pitches for the Quaker City.

At least the Jays are fielding a major-league lineup today, so that's good to see (although Mac produced almost half of the Jays' total offense yesterday).  Barajas continues to sit, but Jose Bautista gets the start in left while Lyle Overbay plays first base, Scott Rolen returns to the lineup, and Adam Lind takes DH duties.

Today's title comes from the same song as yesterday's, "Walt Whitman Bridge" by Marah.  It's a great song so hopefully it'll bring us more luck today than yesterday.  Let's go Jays!

Yeah

But it was all gonna come down to that anyways. So it will be nice to see what we do in make or break time.

I know Mills was bad and all yesterday

but we were playing with basically half of a major-league lineup, but that offensive showing yesterday was absymal anyway

I wouldn’t say you are any worse than anyone else, though I don’t like the five minutes of rolling around on the ground if someone comes close in a soccer game.

so to continue the soccer conversation...

if you were going to coach 10 year old in a 8 vs 8 game when they played full field all season would you go 2-2-3?

by Tom Dakers on Jun 28, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

for 8 on 8

I personally like 2-3-2 if you have good defenders. There’s a lot of space in the middle of the field and I feel like having the extra midfielder helps control it. I would have the central midfielder play from a defensive position and the wings push up the field

you probably use a basic strategy of clearing it to the sides and having the wings push it up the field, right? So you can keep the same strategy

i look at it as a battle of momentum

if tallet can hold their momentum generated from their previous inning, then we gain a bit of positive momentum.
if they get a runner to third and don’t score, we gain more positive momentum
if the phillies fail to score again for the next little while, it starts to swing back to us
but
if we threaten against moyer but don’t score – momentum goes back to them

by epoxypatch on Jun 28, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so we should try to give them more baserunners

so we can get the momentum back by stranding them?

I know this stuff is life and death to us because we are fans

but do we really think that these professional athletes are so psychologically impacted by their team giving up or not giving a run the previous inning that it affects their play? I just don’t see it

yeah, I figure if psychology was that important to the players

they’d all have degrees in it. Being strong and having good hand eye coordination seems to be what’s important. Losing isn’t a mental failing of some sort.

this is interesting

i had no idea that others did not think this way – watching games and keeping the pulse of momentum is the only way i know that works for me.
i can’t imagine that players don’t look at the score – to me it even shows in their body language at the plate.
i must be crazy

Always figure that’s pretty normal, when guys hit well the team wins, what does it prove?

absolutely nothing

it is such a pointless stat, and they try to use it to show one player’s importance to the team but I expect the numbers are similar for most players

here's a question I don't know how to answer:

5. Being Canada’s only team, are there a lot more Blue Jays fans nowadays, or did all the Expos fans become apathetic towards the game?

by Tom Dakers on Jun 28, 2009 2:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

you could make the argument

that Expos fans were pretty apathetic even when they had a team, so their allegiance won’t really make much impact on the overall numbers of baseball fans in Canada

by SuckaMD on Jun 28, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the most important factor

is whether the Jays are playing well and the overall popularity of baseball relative to other NA sports rather than whether a few thousand fans in Montreal are cheering for the Jays or other teams

by SuckaMD on Jun 28, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think probably the latter

Yeah, the Expos lost their fans at the strike

same as us, and I don’t think the Raptors coming into existence right after baseball came back helped.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Jun 28, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the strike

is a convenient argument, but not really one borne out by evidence. Certainly after the strike, the Expos were abysmal in the attendance department, but from 1988-1993, they finished no higher than 10/12 in the NL in attendance. They were doing pretty badly even before the strike, so they didn’t have much of a fan base to weather the post-strike storm like other teams could

by SuckaMD on Jun 28, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

you’re right Sucka – I think it’s more that they lost out on a season that could have really helped the team

Montreal is a fickle sports town

Canada’s two strongest sports cities are (1) Toronto – based largely on size and (2) Edmonton – based on ardency of fans

by aagoodfella on Jun 28, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Toronto fans

are only ardent about the Leafs. The Raptors have a few die hards, probably a bit more so than the Jays, but teams’ popularity swings wildly based on success.

However, I still don’t consider Toronto a great sports town. People really only care about the Leafs, and pretend to care about other teams when they are doing well

i find myself following the Sens now more than the Leafs … at least they have a chance at the cup

but Jays gave me the best sports fan experience ever in the years leading into and then 92 and 93 …. so I am pretty much most loyal to them than any other sports franchise

by aagoodfella on Jun 28, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it would be nice

if other Toronto fans felt the same way, instead of abandoning the team from 95 through the early 00’s and then claiming that they have always been fans when the team starts doing well again.

And the Sens hardly have a chance at the Cup now, they were terrible last year and Heatley is as good as gone

Calgary has won a Stanley Cup virtually as recently as the Oilers did

I would point out

The stadium sizes. Since Commonwealth holds 25, 000 more fans than McMahon, it would skew the numbers. I mean, if McMahon sells out every game, they still can only average just over 35.5k. Commonwealth has averaged more than that for the last 8 years, but that still leaves a very empty stadium…

Make of it what you will I guess.

size does not matter

lol

stamps could still boost capacity by 20-25% to reach capacity

no matter how you slice it … the Esks are the strongest CFL franchise (as measured in attendance) by a healthy margin

i always wondered why their AAA team left (they did have one yes?) since I figured Edmonton was such a sports town

both edmonton and calgary had AAA team but poor attendance and having games cancelled because of weather too much cost them both.

Stamps were pretty much sold out most of last season. This season all the season tickets are sold.
