Far Away From Those Winter Streets / On a Cloudless Day / Your Memory Blows Away: 6/28 Game Preview and Thread, Phillies at Jays
Philadelphia Phillies at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 28, 2009 1:07 PM EDT
The Jays are hoping that the ugly memory of yesterday's game blows away this afternoon as they try to take the Phillies series. Not much to say about a game like yesterday's -- in one game, Mills demonstrated both why he could be a good major league one day and why he's not quite ready for the majors yet. He's back in AAA now, with Doc ready to make his start tomorrow. Brian Tallet will look to follow up on an incredible 3-days rest start his last time out, while the ancient one pitches for the Quaker City.
At least the Jays are fielding a major-league lineup today, so that's good to see (although Mac produced almost half of the Jays' total offense yesterday). Barajas continues to sit, but Jose Bautista gets the start in left while Lyle Overbay plays first base, Scott Rolen returns to the lineup, and Adam Lind takes DH duties.
Today's title comes from the same song as yesterday's, "Walt Whitman Bridge" by Marah. It's a great song so hopefully it'll bring us more luck today than yesterday. Let's go Jays!

won't be sorry to see the end of interleague
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
although it means lots of divisional games
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Yeah
But it was all gonna come down to that anyways. So it will be nice to see what we do in make or break time.
'But I don't want to go among mad people' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that' said the Cat 'we're all mad here'.
definitely
especially since we’re getting Doc back
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that could have gone better though
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I know Mills was bad and all yesterday
but we were playing with basically half of a major-league lineup, but that offensive showing yesterday was absymal anyway
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
yeah
he showed both why he could be a good major-league pitcher and why he isn’t yet
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
At least Howard is a strikeout candidate
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
and now a strikeout casualty
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that was a close pitch
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I love that overhead view.
I wonder if they could go to a straight behind the pitcher view at skydome
They'd have to put the camera at the back of the blacked-out block of seats
instead of at the front, but I think it could be done.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Mayberry Jr
hits it to the track, but Rios hauls it in

I only have
about another hour before the confederations cup final with Brazil, so hopefully we can score some runs early

I have about that long till I have to take my boy to a soccor tourament
playing 8 on 9 soccer for this, just to cause coach dad to think more
possible nickname for Tallet?
Stand Tall Tallet:
-alliteration
-he is 6’7
-reference to his moustache’s resemblance to Burton Cummings’ stache (stand tall was one of burton’s hits)
Jacked!

as if it's not bad enough that they're calling attention
to the fact that he comes out to Coldplay

I wonder if all the people wearing the hats are hot-headed
as Tenace seems to think that we are genetically predisposed that way
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
haha
he made some quote about Wells’ calmness during his slump – said something like he could never stay so calm because of his Italian heritage
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I'm paraphrasing
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Something us non-Italians couldn't say....
I wouldn’t say you are any worse than anyone else, though I don’t like the five minutes of rolling around on the ground if someone comes close in a soccer game.
haha
that is incredibly annoying. Though Italian national team football is hardly the prettiest thing to watch, even without the flopping
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I've long been a proponent of giving out more bookings for diving
to reduce that nonsense
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
would be good, is tough with just the one ref though. Often he's too far away to see if it is a dive
the linemen could potentially help
but yeah. Though diving is hardly confined to the Italian league
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
no it sure isn't.
does put me off soccer. Figure if you can’t be men on the field I don’t want to watch
one reason I like MLS pretty well
they don’t dive too much
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Haven't watched that at all
I guess that’s my other problem, there are so many leagues and players, I can’t keep them straight. So I watch premier league and juventus
so to continue the soccer conversation...
if you were going to coach 10 year old in a 8 vs 8 game when they played full field all season would you go 2-2-3?
for 8 on 8
I personally like 2-3-2 if you have good defenders. There’s a lot of space in the middle of the field and I feel like having the extra midfielder helps control it. I would have the central midfielder play from a defensive position and the wings push up the field
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
but as a centre half myself
I am likely biased, haha
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
all the more reason
you probably use a basic strategy of clearing it to the sides and having the wings push it up the field, right? So you can keep the same strategy
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that's the plan...every thing to the side
put my fastest players on the mid-outsides. My son was mad at me when I put him there but I explained what I wanted, he took to it.
just going to let the boys have fun.
have a little guy that wanted to play keeper all season, but isn’t coordinated….I’m going to let him play today
I have to support one local team
and DC United fit the bill nicely. We can easily take the subway there, the matches are a blast to go to and my little girl loves all the singing and drumming and stuff

what a disaster

they torched us pretty badly already this tournament
but you never know. No one thought we had a chance against Spain either — they were ranked #1 and hadn’t lost an international match since 2006

unexpected show of power
from Bautista

I take back every bad thing I said about Bautista
but I reserve the right to return them
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Why are there three center field cameras?
Do they show the center field view in the stadium?
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
gotta love the Lyle walk
against the lefty to put the baserunner on for the Bautista home run

tallet is missing his spots here
hope he finds them soon
So concerned with the runner stealing
he gave him second for free
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
this inning
isn’t going well so far

two of Utley's teammates have won though
and he is better than both of them
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
With a runner on first
the runner is out on a dropped strike three. Otherwise you would intentionally drop it and get an easy double play.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
It's interesting that it applies even if it obviously wasn't intentional
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
you can't run if there's someone on first

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
have you seen Overbay's
numbers against lefties? no way
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
or not
Overbay looked just as bad there.
Against RHP there’s no question he should, though
definitely
I wish he was batting 2, 3, or 4 against righties. But against lefties, the only reason I even want him to play is that Millar stinks too and at least Lyle can draw a walk and play good defense
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
I really wish they would stop talking about how much Halladay does for charity
it will make us forget how big of a jerk he is
amazing
that he would even donate the lessons, seeing how selfish he is with his time
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
he's so selfish
he decided to only extend his donation to the person with the second-highest bid on the list, freezing out the people who made the 3rd, 4th, and 5th highest bids
yep
his selfishness is matched only by Rolen’s apathy and the “embarassment” that Rios is to the city of Toronto
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
bases drunk with no out

same with nick johnson and all the the other guys who have 1800 OPS against us
two-run triple for Utley
man, he smacked that one
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
tallet blew up good today
did someone predict that based on his hot-cold trend?
3-1 grounder
to finally end the inning
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Brandy, What a Fine Girl
I have to say I am as big a fan of Brandy as Doc. She seems like a very nice lady, does a lot of work for the community and carries herself very well on TV. Very well done, IMHO.
that'll quash our momentum
moyer’s gonna be 123 in this one
totally
let’s just give up now
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
oh ok
good to know
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
true
since the defenders are standing still at the start of the play, they have no velocity, so mass x velocity always = 0
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
but if the Phillies gained significant momentum in the game based on last inning
shouldn’t they be hitting well this inning?
i look at it as a battle of momentum
if tallet can hold their momentum generated from their previous inning, then we gain a bit of positive momentum.
if they get a runner to third and don’t score, we gain more positive momentum
if the phillies fail to score again for the next little while, it starts to swing back to us
but
if we threaten against moyer but don’t score – momentum goes back to them
so we should try to give them more baserunners
so we can get the momentum back by stranding them?
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
but you increase the odds of them scoring too
so i wouldn’t do that on purpose!
it sounds like what you call momentum
I would call “playing well”
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
one of those self fufilling things....
team does well they have momentum, team doesn’t they don’t. me I think if we score 6 here I don’t care about who has momentum.
I know this stuff is life and death to us because we are fans
but do we really think that these professional athletes are so psychologically impacted by their team giving up or not giving a run the previous inning that it affects their play? I just don’t see it
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
yeah, I figure if psychology was that important to the players
they’d all have degrees in it. Being strong and having good hand eye coordination seems to be what’s important. Losing isn’t a mental failing of some sort.
this is interesting
i had no idea that others did not think this way – watching games and keeping the pulse of momentum is the only way i know that works for me.
i can’t imagine that players don’t look at the score – to me it even shows in their body language at the plate.
i must be crazy
oh heck, baseball players know nothing about pyscholgy
when they show me Freud’s career numbers then I’ll worry about it
that's why you don't walk the backup catcher
moonlighting as a DH. Twice, in fact
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
cito please don't send him out again
although i know you will
Anyone else hate when they show how a guy hits when you win and when you lose?
Always figure that’s pretty normal, when guys hit well the team wins, what does it prove?
ya, it stands to reason that when your good players play well, you usually win
if they dont, you usually lose
absolutely nothing
it is such a pointless stat, and they try to use it to show one player’s importance to the team but I expect the numbers are similar for most players
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
here's a question I don't know how to answer:
5. Being Canada’s only team, are there a lot more Blue Jays fans nowadays, or did all the Expos fans become apathetic towards the game?
you could make the argument
that Expos fans were pretty apathetic even when they had a team, so their allegiance won’t really make much impact on the overall numbers of baseball fans in Canada
I think the most important factor
is whether the Jays are playing well and the overall popularity of baseball relative to other NA sports rather than whether a few thousand fans in Montreal are cheering for the Jays or other teams
I think probably the latter
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
though I have noticed the Jays have been trying the past few years to make themselves "Canada's Team"
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Yeah, the Expos lost their fans at the strike
same as us, and I don’t think the Raptors coming into existence right after baseball came back helped.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
I think the strike
is a convenient argument, but not really one borne out by evidence. Certainly after the strike, the Expos were abysmal in the attendance department, but from 1988-1993, they finished no higher than 10/12 in the NL in attendance. They were doing pretty badly even before the strike, so they didn’t have much of a fan base to weather the post-strike storm like other teams could
the strike year they were up in first when the owners locked the doors...
if they had won it would have been good for the team
yeah
you’re right Sucka – I think it’s more that they lost out on a season that could have really helped the team
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Montreal is a fickle sports town
Canada’s two strongest sports cities are (1) Toronto – based largely on size and (2) Edmonton – based on ardency of fans
Toronto fans
are only ardent about the Leafs. The Raptors have a few die hards, probably a bit more so than the Jays, but teams’ popularity swings wildly based on success.
oh, I see what you mean
never mind, forget what I just said.
However, I still don’t consider Toronto a great sports town. People really only care about the Leafs, and pretend to care about other teams when they are doing well
it's funny how a city
can be so die-hard about one team and so apathetic about another team
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that's Canada
where nightly Sportscentre broadcasts still feature 10 minutes of hockey news in June before getting to highlights of that night’s Jays game
DC isn't so different
loves that NFL team with a nasty name, doesn’t so much care about the others unless they are in the playoffs
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
i find myself following the Sens now more than the Leafs … at least they have a chance at the cup
but Jays gave me the best sports fan experience ever in the years leading into and then 92 and 93 …. so I am pretty much most loyal to them than any other sports franchise
it would be nice
if other Toronto fans felt the same way, instead of abandoning the team from 95 through the early 00’s and then claiming that they have always been fans when the team starts doing well again.
And the Sens hardly have a chance at the Cup now, they were terrible last year and Heatley is as good as gone
yea
i remember I was at the tables in Vegas once with a guy from St. Louis (he was wearing a cards cap). We were talking about Eckstein and Rolen. He was chastising me about T.O.’s relatively weak fan support versus St. Louis Cards.
most cities' baseball fans can't hold a candle to St. Louis fans
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
true
but they support teams even when they are struggling and they even attend track and field etc … My opinion on Edmonton is throw any ball onto a field and you will attract a large crowd. LOL LOL
Calgary has won a Stanley Cup virtually as recently as the Oilers did
89 v 90 for the last EDM cup. And IIRC the Flames made the Cup finals the year before the lockout while the Oilers made it the year after. Not much difference in the recent-ness of their success
so wouldn't that
buttress the argument that Calgary fans are better than Edmonton fans?
what else is there to go on?
I don’t know how the Eskies v Stamps attendance goes, but I imagine its fairly similar.
this is the latest data i can find
http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/107692
will keep looking
here we go
Esks attendance much higher than Stamps
http://www.geocities.com/cfl_historical/CFL-Attendance.htm
I would point out
The stadium sizes. Since Commonwealth holds 25, 000 more fans than McMahon, it would skew the numbers. I mean, if McMahon sells out every game, they still can only average just over 35.5k. Commonwealth has averaged more than that for the last 8 years, but that still leaves a very empty stadium…
Make of it what you will I guess.
I don't want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it. ~Rogers Hornsby
size does not matter
lol
stamps could still boost capacity by 20-25% to reach capacity
no matter how you slice it … the Esks are the strongest CFL franchise (as measured in attendance) by a healthy margin
i always wondered why their AAA team left (they did have one yes?) since I figured Edmonton was such a sports town
both edmonton and calgary had AAA team but poor attendance and having games cancelled because of weather too much cost them both.
Stamps were pretty much sold out most of last season. This season all the season tickets are sold.
Big O
i remember seeing a game at the big O. I dropped my keys on the concrete floor beneath my seat. It made an echo. I remember thinking “echo? hmmm, that is not a good sign” LOL
a "Hall-of-Fame" afternoon
is about as big a baseball oxymoron as you’re going to find

"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
ok this is our inning boys
tallet please hold’em one last time
i m getting worried about Jays here
their offense is slowing down a bit
still 4 more innings to go
and the Phillies bullpen isn’t great, though the Jays have been stymied by bad pens before
Ricciardi I think
though he’d be gone by now anyway, unless we had signed him to a long term deal
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
no he wasn't
though he wasn’t playing much either, and he was a former first-round pick. It took a bunch of injuries for Werth to get his shot, and good for him for taking advantage of it
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
Werth was quite green when th Jays dumped him
but I am happy with getting Frasor
we did get Jason Frasor for him

whoa!
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
wow
nice catch from Vernon on a deep fly from Howard
gets the Jays out of the inning. Tallet won’t be back for the 7th
with the pitch count at 110
the bullpen had better take over.
Who’s warming up?
I'm used to seeing that one deflect off Wells' glove
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
normally I think something like
well, it took a pretty good play just to get his glove on it
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
and Lando makes it 2-nil US!

time for Lyle to start hitting like the can
that was a smart move by the Philly manager
to take moyer out
Geez, 6 pitch inning
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Good inning from League
with a bit of help from Stairs/Bautista
Runs now, please
great play by Utley there

nice inning for Accardo too
let’s tie this thing up!

up to Lyle now
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
a little surprised they are leaving Madson in

I would have accepted a based loaded walk from Bautista
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

More likely he had 8 good games in between being terrible the rest of the season.
His good games were still not as good as Lind & Rolen’s entire season.
he's about to be overtaken by big papi

we usually suck against tampa
why do you think we’ll do fine?
This season has been filled with unexpected turns and results. For example – taking 4 of 6 versus the World Champs and losing 2 of 3 from the worst team in the last 10 years.
I think that with Halladay going tomorrow we have a reasonable shot to split the other two and take a series win.

message to management
don’t put all of your salary into one basket for more than one season
today we were beaten by a hit that outhit and outpitched us
and was hungrier for the win
(i would say mentally tough but many don’t believe in that)
I think hungrier for the win is just as bad

sloppy mistakes cost
passed ball cost a run
base running error cost a bottom of the ninth out
obviously there are a variety of factors that lead to win or loss, but why allow errors to torpedo your game … need to tighten up, the AL East is competitive
i have no problem with 4th place
its where we were expected to be
it must be more relaxing
AL East is still very much up for grabs
it will be a horse race to the end IMHO
"relaxing"?
huh?
