Robert Ray
Can someone explain what this maneuvering is designed to achieve? I did not think Ray was injured, so I am assuming it was done to meet league guidelines re: send downs & call ups, etc ...
May 30 Toronto voided its option on Ray and placed him on the 15-day disabled list. Ray was optioned to Triple-A last Friday.
Advice: Ray is 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA this season for the Blue Jays.

i'm no expert...
but he is injured and for whatever reason, they decided that he should be sent to the DL from the major league team rather than the minor league team so that he gets paid his major league salary.
... and
accrues major league service time. Perhaps it’s similar to what happened awhile back when they tried to option Chacin but MLB overruled the Jays’ decision and they had to void the option and place him on the DL.
i think teams put guys on the DL rather than optioning them due to limited amount of options and whatnot… i dont think hes hurt.
i dont think BJ was really hurt before, he just sucked so they said he was hurt.
I imagine the conversation with BJ went a little like:
JP: You either A) Accept a assignment to the minors and publicly lose your closers job and lose face. OR B) Go on the DL with an injury to be disclosed later, you save some face and go the minors for some “Rehab” stints.
BJ: Where is it supposed to hurt?

Well Ray has been up already this year...
sending him down won’t count anymore options. They can send him up and down all they want in three seasons. Why Ray was DL would have to be that he became injured while on the major league roster, so he couldn’t be sent down because if a guy is hurt he can’t be sent down just to save money.
