Glavine

Glavine was cut by the Braves today. Perhaps the Jays should pick him up. Maybe another veteran arm would help these young guys and give some stability to the rotation. Although he's past his prime, I would think he could still throw some innings and give us a chance to win some games. Or we stick with the young guys this year and hope for the best. I am not sure what you would have to pay Glavine to get him though as the Braves were going to have to pay him a bonus of 1 million if put on the roster. That's probably why they cut him. That and he's old.

I just don’t see our young arms being ready for the big time yet. We need them now if we are to make a run. Bringing in a veteran might have some merit. Janssen is struggling, Richmong is struggling, Purcey is gone back, Cecil gone back, Ray gone back and injured and Litsch not ready yet. Romero also doesn’t look great right now.

Glavine-time

Can’t hurt to give Tommy a shot. Since Halladay and Tallet are the only starters pitching well. I think Janssen would better serve the team in the pen anyway.

Any inning-eater would be good for the Jays now. We need to rest the bullpen a bit these days.

A vet like Glavine with a good track record and one who could share his experience would be good for the young pitchers we have on the roster.

And, the Leafs could use Glavine, too. He was a good hockey player in college. :-)

Glavine wouldn't be an innings eater at this age...

if he averaged much over 5 innings I’d be surprised. But we have lots of good arms in the pen.

Just to check I looked at what Glavine did last year

He averaged 4.8 innings per start for his 13 starts and had an ERA of 5.54. You’d hope he’d do better than that if someone picked him up but I don’t think he’s going to go deep in a lot of games.

That is not necessarily someone I would want in my rotation, I would rather they call Cecil back up.

I would say Purcey but a quick look at his stats on MiLB.com here shows that he is still walking a ton of people, and although he has been pitching deep into games and giving up few runs he still needs to work on the walks before I want him back with the Jays.

As for Purcey

I think he might be better served with a move to the bullpen at this point…

by bunner on Jun 4, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Im not sure I would want him even there. Do you want a guy coming out of your bullpen mid game that is wild and walks a ton of guys?

If he doesn’t learn to get that under control and fast he is done.

i think he'd have good control out of the 'pen

since he doesn’t need to use all his pitches – but yeah, he’s running out of time.

I don't think Glavine is the answer

But the question stays the same “Who the hell is going to step up in the Rotation?”
My god, Janssen and Romero have looked terrible since coming back. I’m at the point that we need to bring Cecil and Purcey back, if for no other reason because there is no one else

I'm not saying they are not good pitchers

Just perhaps not ready today. Thats why I keep beating the 2010 drum.

That comes from IRC

Your intent is more clear if you put it in angle brackets like an HTML tag. ie. </sarcasm>

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

IMHO, Romero is hanging some of his pitches which is leading to the HRs … hopefully he can get that handled and his results will improved … I do not think Purcey would be much of an improvement yet until he resolves his control issues

But

Romero walked 4 last time out did he not? Thats gotta stop…

yep

probably symptomatic of the same issue

We are back to Halladay and Tallet and three days of rain. I say we take a flier on someone, maybe not Glavine. There have to be other guys out there. let these other guys stay in the minors. No point destroying their confidence at the MLB level. What happened to Cecil was awful and I could see it happening over and over. Janssen is clearly not the answer. Tallet has always showed promise as a starter so I am not surprised that he is fitting in nicely. The rotation consists of two guys and a bunch of wannabes. Hardly a rotation. Time to make a move.

Richmond is still effective

by aagoodfella on Jun 4, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

Richmond has done fine, Janssen has had 2 pretty decent starts and one awful one, not exactly the worst one could imagine, Romero hasn’t been great since returning but did well yesterday and hasn’t exactly been awful. I’m not sure Glavine would be any better than Janssen, Richmond, or Romero, and one or more of those guys could be part of the team’s future while Glavine can’t. Plus Litsch is on the way back, Cecil had a very nice start the other day and you’ve also got Castro, Mills, and Purcey still hanging around AAA. I think I’d rather see what the kids can do.

I am skeptical about Glavine but ...

Cecil’s great game the other day, whilst inspirational, was against the worst hitting team in the PCl

Litsch’s return has been delayed

Purcey still struggling

so, I might give him a look … but I am doubtful he could displace any of the Jay’s current rotation, assuming Janssen has no more outings like the last one

FYI – i hear Snider is on the DL and now in Florida

by aagoodfella on Jun 6, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I am not so certain Richmond is fine. Seems prone to the big inning as if he goes south mentally quickly and it all unravels. He needs more experience working out jams.

by BigTimeBlueJayFan on Jun 7, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

i m corrected

yep, after yesterday’s performance, i m thinking it might be a good idea to take a look at Glavine

by aagoodfella on Jun 7, 2009 7:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Bottom Line

Glavine isn’t even sure if he wants to continue pitching, especially if it is for any other team other then the Braves.

According to Ken Rosenthal there has been plenty of kicking the tires on Glavine but nothing really all that serious. In fact a lot of teams have been inquiring about him becoming a asst. Pitching Coach. I am sure some of these other teams would have more pitching problems then the Jays have.

Basically what it boils down to is that even if the Jays wanted to, I am not sure Glavine would come here to pitch either A) Because he doesn’t want to play with Toronto or B) because he doesn’t want to pitch anymore.

All that being said, I still don’t think it is a great idea.

by JohnnyG on Jun 7, 2009 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

agreed, but if it proves that the Jays need him and if he has enough in the tank to perform, it is worth the slight to the our collective Jays ego to ask … LOL

this is alot of iffffs, like Jays starters are not satisfactory and Glavine is still good enough … so we are deep deep into the hypothetical here

i would take pedro over glavine – pedro’s younger and probably a bit hungrier
