Ranking Players: Continuing the endless Youkilis debate
A little while ago during one of the game threads Tom and I got into it about where Kevin Youkilis ranks in the league. The argument stemmed from watching the TSN2 feed of the Jays-Sox series with Eck exclaiming that Youk was a top 5 player in all of baseball.
My Argument was that he was not even a top 5 1st basemen let alone all of the bigs.
While I stand by my assertion that I do not think Youk is a top 5 ballplayer in the bigs, I have to admit it is a lot closer then I originally thought.
Well apparently this sort of debate is going on all over the place. Particulary when it comes to debating the merits of ballplayers with respect to fantasy leagues.
Check out this article on the Wall Street Journal. Apparently everyone has a different opinion on this.
I have since relented on my opinion of him not being a top 5 1st basemen in all of Ball but I don't think he makes top 5 overall.
Here are my top 1st Basemen and top overall (not including pitchers), What's yours? Post below
My top 1st basemen:
- Albert Pujols
- Miguel Cabrera
- Justin Morneau
- Ryan Howard
- Kevin Youkilis
Top Overall
- Albert Pujols
- David Wright
- Alex Rodriguez
- Hanley Ramirez
- Evan Longoria (I would have put Sizemore here to begin the year but Longoria has changed my mind on that one)

I started towards a post on this idea and then like half the things started
it got put aside. Pujols is clear number 1. For the first baseman I think you have Howard way over rated….he’s hit in the .250’s the last couple of years and his on base is in the .330’s but he does hit lots of homers, so your mileage might vary. I’d rather have Youk than Morneau. Last year was an awful one for Cabrera so I ignored him at the time but he’s putting up numbers again this year.
Longoria I wouldn’t consider till he plays a little longer, baseball history is full of flash in the pans, I doubt he’d be one but I wouldn’t call him top 5 in the league till he has a few seasons in. Beyond that I’ll have to find the notes I made when thinking about it before.
Cabrera was horrible until the last quarter last year and then turned it around and ended up putting up respectable numbers.
Given fielding ability as well I would flipflop Howard and Youk, Don’t know what it is about Howard but I do like the guy so maybe my view is being a little biased.
And I would still take Morneau

I guess the term 'awful' was the wrong one for Cabrera last year,,,
but on base was .349 after a couple of years of being in the .400’s. He was good last year but not top of the world good I guess is how I’d put it. Morneau last couple of years slugged under .500 and his on base .343 and .374 isn’t in the range of top guys to me. Youk last year had a .390 on base and a .569 slugging, both marks far better than Morneau has been. This year Youk has been incredible so far but then how much weight do you give that.

The updates that SB Nation did for fanposts with auto-tagging and linking are awesome.

I am clearly AL biased
But David Wright over A-rod?
Putting aside all of A-rods asshattery, he is clearly an unbelievable talent and has to be at least a co-number 1 with Poo-holes.

no not number one....Pujols is the one easy choice...
I don’t think anyway….ARod’s defense isn’t what it was.
Course I have a hate for ARod so….clouds all….damn I have to find my notes….
one for Pujols' case
in case you missed this highlight reel, Pujols generates 2 RBI on a sac fly

based on this year id have to put beltran up there too
he plays a very good center field and his hitting has kept mets in it this year
These notes are like a myth!

they might be by now....
If life slows down in the next week or so (yeah little chance of that) I’ll put together what I had and maybe come up with something.
Youk # 2
Yep…I will give # 1 to Pujols, But no contest for # 2 to Youk! C’mon don’t post season count for anything?
WOW
No Adrian Gonzalez mentions at all for top 5 first basemen? The guy puts up great numbers and plays half his games in Petco!! And last time I checked he had 22 homeruns and has a ridiculous 1.042 OPS. This guy is just starting to hit his prime (27 years old). This guy rakes!
You could argue that this might be a fluke year, but I don’t think so. I think he is just starting to hit his stride. I just wish that he could get out of San Diego to show us what he really could do! Imagine if he played half of his games in Philly like Howard does….
Oh ya… the guy also won a gold glove last year too….
My Top 5
1. Albert Pujols (No doubt number one)
2. Miguel Cabrera ( I think the next best hitter .310/.382/.540 career)
3. Adrian Gonzalez (See above)
4. Ryan Howard (Monster Masher)
5. Prince Fielder (Career .281/.377/.540 and just turned 25)
Honourable mention: Texiera, Morneau, Berkman.
Youkilis is now 30 years old and has never had a 30 HR season (29 last year). While I think he is great, I would rather have any of those 8 to hit in my four hole. By no means am I bashing Youkilis, I just think you are jumping the gun by saying he is in the top 5 after a hot start!
Youk isn’t just a hot start, He had a good last year as well, but you can’t say im jumping the gun after a hot start and then brush over the fact that Gonzalez is having a hot start as well.
Look, I’ll level with ya, I don’t really follow the National League as much. The Jays play in the AL so its only natural I follow the AL more closely. I’m only in 1 mixed league when it comes to Fantasy out of 3 so I don’t really know the players as much.
As for the Gold Glove… Yeah that’s nice… but I don’t exactly put a lot of stock into them, it is a bit of a shame of an award.
