We are the navvies who work upon the railway, Swingin our hammers in the bright blazin sun: Canada Day Game Thread
Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays, Jul 1, 2009 1:07 PM EDT
Yeah, it's Canada Day and there is no more Canadian a song than Canadian Railroad Trilogy. I'm not sure how to spell Navvies but that will have to be close enough. Always been one of my favorite songs, I've seen Gordon Lightfoot in concert twice, the first time he was terrible, he did the songs from his latest album, side 1 then side 2, in order, then the Canadian Railroad Trilogy and off. Bad sound and he was in a hurry to leave. Second time he was great, sang everything, hits and cool album cuts that weren't hits, he was in great voice, in a great mood and it was fun.
So Vernon will wear his nice red Canada Day Jersey on the bench. He does need something to clear his head but then Kevin Millar and Jose Bautista aren't hitting at all either. It looks like 1 through 5 is the way the batting order is going to be for the next little while but we'll see.
Ricky Romero gets the start for the Jays. I am really enjoying watching him pitch. If you find anyone that thought he would be this good this year then you have found yourself an expert to follow. James Shields pitches for the Rays and he ain't bad either. Have to take the enjoyment where we can when the team isn't playing well, we have seen lots of good pitching and lots of good defense. Would love to see lots of runs by our guys. We gave Cito and Tenace lots of credit for the offense when things were good, I guess we'll see if they are good batting coaches now.
Anyway join us in the thread.

Fergie Jenkins throwing out the first pitch
I wanted to write about him today but likely won’t be time. Only Canadian in the Hall
I'm paying too much attention to the NHL Free Agency madness
but that sounded like a helluva pick-off. Wow.
Le Sigh
The radio commentators were just talking about how Lind and Hil (and Crawford on the Rays)l have so many hits this season.
It bounced really far in front of him
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
A little bit
although I think the price was right. By the figuring of the SB Nation canucks blog folks, they’ve got about 10 million left in cap space to fill +/- 7 roster spots. Not too bad. I don’t see them making a big splash to sign an UFA, but anything is possible.
Ah shoot, work the count Rolen. grrrr
Not really a net gain
getting Wells out of the lineup when it means Millar plays
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
another thing
if Toronto fans are too easy on Rios/Wells, can we mercilessly jab at Millar for sucking harder than either of them?

Shield's control seems lacking
He’s throwing a lot of balls. Is it just his way of getting the hitter to overthink, or is he having accuracy issues?
he does really seem to be coming on
next year should be fun, but can’t help being a little sad at the absence of McGowan
Prehistoric Hoops - a neat little Raps blog
yeah he's changing speeds and locations, looks really good, course if we don't score it doesn't matter
yeah, he's been cold
do you know how many BBs? seems like he’s still getting on base

I sure wish the twins never made that trade
for young, it’s made life tougher for the jays. That is one lopsided trade victory so far.
way to go Canada!
I mean Scoot (sorry, I had been waiting for that)
Prehistoric Hoops - a neat little Raps blog
he seems to now just wanna piss the last team he played for off
going from the Pens to the Wings, now the Wings to the Hawks, heh
I read that Atlanta would move escobar for a bat
This may sound crazy but if the jays are out of it, rios/scoot for escobar? Too much, not worth it?
I know, I was just thinking long term controllable short stop,
then hopefully snider in right.
I doubt we'll see snider this year....
I don’t know…I know folks are down on Rios but not sure I’d trade him unless I got something good
yeah
I’m a homer for sure but I think you have to assume this is an anomaly, at least for now
Prehistoric Hoops - a neat little Raps blog
this is true
but after his first two seasons he seemed to steadily be around .290, entering his prime. and even with those two no homers at all seasons his OPSes weren’t all that bad, while in his three good seasons they were about 115

Two runs in a game?
That’s unpossible!
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
wonder what would have to happen for him to be released....
would he have to write ‘the ship is sinking’ on the board 100 times?
Since the only reason he's on this time is being a clubhouse guy
I think that’s unlikely.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
oh please not a batting coach, some of these guys are having a hard enough time hitting with Cito/Gene teaching, they don't need a bad influence with Kev trying to help, heh
Make him the assistant clubhouse attendant
Now there’s a clubhouse guy
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
What brand of bat does Millar use?
Because his lazy fly balls make a great sound.

Back to hockey:
Roloson just signed with the Islanders. Edmonton has no goaltender. And still no Heatley.
Tough time to be an Oil fan right now, I’d say.
Losing Rolson is tough, but I think the price was a little steep for the Heatley trade anyway (especially considering the Sens were backed into a corner). Giving up Penner and Cogliano for Heatley is too much IMO. Heatley just doesn’t do enough when he doesn’t have the puck.
Maybe Edmonton is going after the Sweedish goalie that quite a few teams want right now. He’s supposed to be pretty good I guess. If not, they might be in trouble for next year.
It should be red on the side panels and white on the front with the old logo

Last hit was game 2 against Cinci
But he has 4 walks since then.

Millar makes contact
I just can’t tell if he’s using a sand wedge or a gap wedge.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
Gonna really try.
There’s one little… errr… snag that may foul up the works. But I’ve arranged for the time off from work. I want to make this work in the worst way. Never been to a ball game before
not sure
would like to but i need to make sure i have the money for the flight and all
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
but Carm is coming along...he says trying to invoke her name and see if she appears...
she might bring the quad
You are bad!!
Yes, I’m coming. NO I won’t bring the quad!!! I still need to buy the game tickets though
possibility i will try and piggieback a visit to a friend of mine
who lives in oregon. don’t get to see him frequently
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
should offer to stop using song lyrics
if sbnation pays for the ticket
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
now there is a plan.
though they haven’t been on us about that lately. There is some that feel the song titles give a personality to the place.
yeah..
we’ve being talking to a guy about community building. He thinks it would be good to switch to book titles or movie quotes at some point.
You have to use Frasor
He hasn’t pitched in days.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
I'd have been happy with doubles and good baserunning
but I’ll take homers too.
They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
sounds kind of funny
“their newest defenseman, free agent Jay Bouwmeester”
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Jerry says no one is working in the pen...
Ricky is coming back out?
Except when he's looked horrible

All those times a ball bounced off or out of his glove?

yankees should push burnett's start back
so doc can face him again
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
How's that for bullpen collapses
With 2 out and nobody on in the top of the 9th, up by 2 after Josh Johnson allowed 2 runs and no outs to open the inning, Sherril gives up single, walk, walk, single, walk. Finally got a foul popup to strand them loaded with the game tied.
