We are the navvies who work upon the railway, Swingin our hammers in the bright blazin sun: Canada Day Game Thread

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays, Jul 1, 2009 1:07 PM EDT

Yeah, it's Canada Day and there is no more Canadian a song than Canadian Railroad Trilogy. I'm not sure how to spell Navvies but that will have to be close enough. Always been one of my favorite songs, I've seen Gordon Lightfoot in concert twice, the first time he was terrible, he did the songs from his latest album, side 1 then side 2, in order, then the Canadian Railroad Trilogy and off. Bad sound and he was in a hurry to leave. Second time he was great, sang everything, hits and cool album cuts that weren't hits, he was in great voice, in a great mood and it was fun.

So Vernon will wear his nice red Canada Day Jersey on the bench. He does need something to clear his head but then Kevin Millar and Jose Bautista aren't hitting at all either. It looks like 1 through 5 is the way the batting order is going to be for the next little while but we'll see.

Ricky Romero gets the start for the Jays. I am really enjoying watching him pitch. If you find anyone that thought he would be this good this year then you have found yourself an expert to follow. James Shields pitches for the Rays and he ain't bad either. Have to take the enjoyment where we can when the team isn't playing well, we have seen lots of good pitching and lots of good defense. Would love to see lots of runs by our guys. We gave Cito and Tenace lots of credit for the offense when things were good, I guess we'll see if they are good batting coaches now.

Anyway join us in the thread.

I wanted to write about him today but likely won’t be time. Only Canadian in the Hall

Le Sigh

The radio commentators were just talking about how Lind and Hil (and Crawford on the Rays)l have so many hits this season.

A little bit

although I think the price was right. By the figuring of the SB Nation canucks blog folks, they’ve got about 10 million left in cap space to fill +/- 7 roster spots. Not too bad. I don’t see them making a big splash to sign an UFA, but anything is possible.

Ah shoot, work the count Rolen. grrrr

Not really a net gain

getting Wells out of the lineup when it means Millar plays

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

by Torgen on Jul 1, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

another thing

if Toronto fans are too easy on Rios/Wells, can we mercilessly jab at Millar for sucking harder than either of them?

Yeah, it's too bad

I want Millar to succeed, really I do. But he’s doing terribely lately.

by Temujin on Jul 1, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he does really seem to be coming on

next year should be fun, but can’t help being a little sad at the absence of McGowan

Shields on average

uses less than 15 pitches per inning. That’s quite good, I would say!

by Temujin on Jul 1, 2009 1:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I sure wish the twins never made that trade

for young, it’s made life tougher for the jays. That is one lopsided trade victory so far.

I read that Atlanta would move escobar for a bat

This may sound crazy but if the jays are out of it, rios/scoot for escobar? Too much, not worth it?

by ClintB on Jul 1, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

that's a lot for Escobar

isn’t hitting much better than Rios

by Tom Dakers on Jul 1, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt we'll see snider this year....

I don’t know…I know folks are down on Rios but not sure I’d trade him unless I got something good

by Tom Dakers on Jul 1, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

I’m a homer for sure but I think you have to assume this is an anomaly, at least for now

Prehistoric Hoops - a neat little Raps blog

by boo15749 on Jul 1, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is true

but after his first two seasons he seemed to steadily be around .290, entering his prime. and even with those two no homers at all seasons his OPSes weren’t all that bad, while in his three good seasons they were about 115

Two runs in a game?

That’s unpossible!

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

whoops.

not a good play by Pena. but i’ll take it, 2-0, now dont suck Millar

What brand of bat does Millar use?

Because his lazy fly balls make a great sound.

Back to hockey:

Roloson just signed with the Islanders. Edmonton has no goaltender. And still no Heatley.

Tough time to be an Oil fan right now, I’d say.

by Temujin on Jul 1, 2009 2:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Losing Rolson is tough, but I think the price was a little steep for the Heatley trade anyway (especially considering the Sens were backed into a corner). Giving up Penner and Cogliano for Heatley is too much IMO. Heatley just doesn’t do enough when he doesn’t have the puck.

Maybe Edmonton is going after the Sweedish goalie that quite a few teams want right now. He’s supposed to be pretty good I guess. If not, they might be in trouble for next year.

Last hit was game 2 against Cinci

But he has 4 walks since then.

I just can’t tell if he’s using a sand wedge or a gap wedge.

Gonna really try.

There’s one little… errr… snag that may foul up the works. But I’ve arranged for the time off from work. I want to make this work in the worst way. Never been to a ball game before

How's that for bullpen collapses

With 2 out and nobody on in the top of the 9th, up by 2 after Josh Johnson allowed 2 runs and no outs to open the inning, Sherril gives up single, walk, walk, single, walk. Finally got a foul popup to strand them loaded with the game tied.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.
