In New York Freedom Looks Like Too Many Choices: 7/3 Game Preview and Thread, Jays at Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees, Jul 3, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

Hi everyone and hope you Yankees (not that kind) are enjoying your holiday weekend.  I'm up in NYC for the weekend, and looking forward to the 4-day-game series against New York's Richest (actually not even close, probably).

In a few moves, David Dellucci has been called up from AAA (and is batting 8th today), while Russ Adams has been sent down.  Vernon Wells is back in the lineup and batting 6th today, while Scott Downs is going to throw a bullpen session and could return in a few days.

Brian Tallet goes for the Yankees today and looks to extend his improbable run as a starter, while old friend A.J. Burnett, coming off an exceptional start his last time out, throws for the Yankees.  Nothing against A.J., but let's knock him around a bit, eh?

My only lineup complaint is that if Rios reaches base late in the game

he’ll be unable to steal because they’ll bring in a LOOGY to face Dellucci.

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

I think he gets offered another trip to AAA

Although he might be able to refuse it now.

Anyone want to bet that the Jays don't get a single HR this weekend?

Honestly, I can see them either pounding about 4 or 5 a game or… none. So Hot and Cold.

i am not sure

i think it is mostly psychological … i mean what is the diff between 3-4-5 anyway except stuff that is going on inside your head ….

but clearly, it is very impactful on Lind

Good thing that

Cano automatically morph from MVP to LVP when he comes to bat with guys on base.

this season

empty: 347/.380/.541
men on : 259/.294/.427
RISP : 213/.248/.340

In true Cito style, they let him hit, he gets on base, and he’s pulled for Johnny Mac. Thats my worst Cito Pet Peeve. Why not just pinch hit for him?

by Torgen on Jul 3, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not me

i have been preaching for a long time now … i do not give a dam if it is 3 feet over the zone … just swing at the first pitch every dang time … it is a huge problem

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol ...

temporary measure until that problem is fixed because I am sure they are scouting Rios that way because he gets soooooooooo many first pitches that are a hitter’s dream and just stands there and watches them go by … i find it incredible to watch it

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

too common Rios at bat

first one is a strike (hittable) – Rios watches it go by

than a ball or something

then a good strike and Rios is way behind

so with two strikes, Rios makes a wild swing at a pitch out of the zone

how many times have we see that this year …. way way way too often

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So far this year Rios has hit the 0-1 pitch better than the 0-0 pitch

They're not just hitting home runs. They're doing the little things, like hitting doubles.

Slugs .486 on the 0-0

how many hits on 0-0 versus 0-1?

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, all i m saying is go back and look at the tape and all these amazingly sweet hitter’s pitches that Rios watches go by that he should crush for extra bases …. it is really, imho, unbelievable …. plus when he has to defend the plate with a 2 strike count, he is no Scutaro

this combination is a major source of Rios Ks and a major source of missed extra-base hits in Rios’ game, IMHO

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok

Me, if the lead off guy goes after the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth down by more than one, he doesn’t understand the game

by Tom Dakers on Jul 3, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

is there anywhere I can get the pitch by pitch data on Rios AB this year

because i would really like to look at those numbers … I m confident it will show he should be swinging (almost blindly) on first pitches

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i could be wroing … buit i really think there is something there in terms of AB strategy that really needs to be fixed

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

pitching poker

it is like a poker game

if pitchers know that Rios never swings at pitch #1 and that he is a poor plate defender when behind in the count, than they all follow the same formula … serve up a juicy one on the first pitch, than try to get a good one (well-placed or foul) and then keep it out of the zone and voila, you have a Rios K

same in poker, if folks know you are too tight, they keep raising and take your blinds

so Rios has to counter that strategy by being overly aggressive on the first pitch … this strategy takes the pressure off Rios and than puts it back on the pitchers .. they can no longer get away with a soft first pitch cuz they know Rios will jump on it

same in poker, if folks keep raising you, you have to turn up the aggression and re-raise them or push all-in if they keep raising … this will shift pressure back to them so they will back off

I am not commenting on Rios execution, but what I am saying is that pitchers are kicking Rios’ butt in terms of strategy and he needs to respond aggressively (on 1st pitch) else they will keep picking on him

by aagoodfella on Jul 3, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but he doesn't 'never' swing at strike one.....

leading off the ninth, down by more than a run, almost no major leaguers will swing at strike one. A) no one has seen the pitcher that day, making an out on the first pitch won’t show much. B) they need to see if they can work a walk, their run doesn’t matter it is the guy coming after them that matters.
