If I was Roy....
I would be thinking what the hell do I have to do to get a win on this damn ball team? It has got to be so frustrating to give it your all in heat like that and not have your team get a hit until the 7th inning. Sportnets kept saying Roy wasn't great today, it wasn't Roy's best outing. Give me a break. The guy can't be expected to get all his wins giving up only one or two runs. The guy just pitched 7 innings, gave up 3 runs, NO WALKS and 11 hits and some of those hits were bloopers or infield hits. I think there were about four balls hit hard all day. And what bothers me more is the following:
In 2008, Halladay pitched 5 games where he gave up 3 or less earned runs in 7 or more innings and either lost or got a no decision.
In 2007, it was 6 games.
In 2006, it was 5 games.
This year: It has been 6 games already and certainly more to come!!!!
I would love to know what is going through his mind when he sits on that bench after he's done in the 8th and he could have been playing for the Phillies who probably would have found a way to win that game, but here he remains surrounded by guys who can't get up the energy to get him a few runs off a relative no-name pitcher.
The offense is anemic.
That's at least 22 games more games Roy probably would have won if he was playing for a better team. The guy is too nice to think that way, but after this many quality starts with a no decision or a loss, it absolutely has to cross his mind. He is too polite. I think it's time Halladay tore a strip off this organization and called a few players out onto the carpet. Something like: "You know I would consider signing long term with the Jays if some of the higher paid players would perform a bit better and if Rogers would pony up some cash to bring in some quality players." Instead he says, "I want to wait and make a decision without having to predict the future". Hell yeah you have to predict the future because you are playing with the likes of Vernon Wells who we can't trust and is very unpredictable and who sucks up a very large part of the budget, an owner who isn't sure if they are raising the payroll or reducing it from year to year, a GM who doesn't know what kind of budget he'll have to work with and whether he should be rebuilding indefinitely, building around Halladay for 2010 or building around Lind and Hill for 2013, another guy named Rios who just doesn't seem to care sometimes, and a whole bunch of pitchers who seem to be hurt or are playing their first year in the majors, a manager who has no idea what lineup to use because the only thing that is consistent is the inconsistency. You call this a team? I call it a three-ring circus with only one act and he's bloody annoyed.

Just shows why he's the best pitcher in the league
He doesn’t need 5 runs to win a game, and sure if he played for boston his wins would be higher, but hes not playing to get Stats. I can see how if the team loses, he blames himself a little, hes just that kind of guy
Early in the year he was leading the league in run support.
Everything averages out over 162, I assume he is around the middle of the pack in run support. Actually, I looked it up. He’s 11th in the entire AL. Stats here

I was surprised it only takes 1 rec to get a fanpost recommend reading.
'But I don't want to go among mad people' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that' said the Cat 'we're all mad here'.
That could be adjusted by the powers that be.

I think that goes back to a time before
we had this level of participation from readers, so it is worth reevaluating. the more folks use the recs, the more useful they will be

I don’t think avg. run support is the greatest stat because you could rack up a lot of run support in one game. I think run support in your losses or no decisions would be a better indication of whether you lost because of the bats or because of your pitching. It’s just interesting to me that there have been a lot of games each year (about 15% of his starts that have been quality starts with no decisions). Over a career that amounts to a lot of possible wins that never came to be. I haven’t compared to someone on Boston or New York yet but I would predict it happens more often to Halladay. Maybe if I get time I’ll analyze that.

You can't pick and choose stats to make your argument work.
Your argument was “The offense is anemic.” and the stats say differently. There was times early in the year that Doc wasn’t sharp but won because they produced lots of runs. Truth be told, his run support is very good, you just have a bad taste in your mouth from yesterdays loss (I do too) but thats a couple games now in July where Doc had a late lead, but blew it. Thats baseball.

Yes it is baseball. Roy has to be frustrated. To know that you are going to go out five or six times a year and pitch a great game and not win has got to be tough. I did include no decisions which could have turned into wins. And the point is not to pad your own stats.
Basically all I wanted to point out was that this happens a significant number of times a year for ROy and that during those starts the offense is anemic. I went through 1973 Nolan Ryan starts. He started 41 games, many of them 8 or 9 innings and it only happened to him 4 times. 6 starts a year is a good portion of the total starts and 6 extra wins can be the difference in some cases to making the playoffs and not making them. So wasting those starts hurts a lot. Especially when it compounds losing streaks and it’s another five days until your ace goes again.
I am not picking and choosing stats, I am just saying that run support/loss or no decision would be a more interesting stat than run support in general.

I looked at Sabathia and Beckett. it’s only happened once to each of them that they have thrown a quality start and lost or got a no decision. Beckett has had 9 quality starts and won 8 of them. Roy has had 14 quality starts and won 8 of them. Sabathia has had 11 quality starts and won 10 of them which is all his wins. You’ll argue that doesn’t prove anything, but I find it telling. Extrapolating that, Roy would have 13 wins in those 14 quality starts. Granted Roy probably has more QS than the other two so he has a better chance of it happening to him. But if he’s thinking “I pitched well enough to win us more games” then he’s probably also thinking “It would be better if I was somewhere else where my efforts will translate into more wins or a higher chance of it”.

Last night Halladay was probably thinking...
something along the lines of “God dammit, it’s hot here and I can’t wait to check out the Seattle nightlife with a nice cold (watered down American) beer” and “who is this Griffey guy anyway, I’ve never seen a scouting report on him…oh, damn, another double – should have read that scouting report; is it beer time yet” :)
its amazing how people complain for him
Its not like this is the first season it happened. Don’t you think he would have Demanded a trade? instead of just making it known he wants to win?
you made your point…Theres no doubt on paper, he’d look even better..but who cares we all know he’s the best

Roy is too classy
to rock the boat and ask for a trade
the most you will get from him is wavering on commitment for 2010 UFA – which he has done
he has given enough to the Jays and Toronto that he should have whatever option he wants
Truly a professional!
What a classy sports professional this guy is, any other pitcher or player in same circumstances would have wanted out a long time ago…Hope they don’t trade him by end of deadline, it would such a bonus for us to get to see him here for another season…
"Sports is something you know, not something you should preach.'
i almost wish he would get traded
it would be a nice change to have someone to root for in october
This is true
Id be actually watching the playoffs for once if Roy was pitching in them.
